I have done it a few times, the only real downside is the infrequency of the Ipswich to Cambridge leg making it a bit of a pain timings wise sometimes (especially if you miss one).
Shouldn't be a massive issue tomorrow, but the Cambridge to Ipswich line also is usually only a couple of busy carriages. |  | | |

I am doing it tomorrow. Booked 2 separate returns, Ips - Cbg and Cbg - KX. Plenty of choice on the Cbg -KX, and fast trains every half hour. Having separate tickets means I can hit the pub at the station if I have half an hour spare on the return leg. | | | |
