The cross from Clarke into Hirst 10:32 - Oct 22 with 1297 viewsShortyBlue92

was outstanding

Just a shame Hirst felt the need to take a touch or 5, rather than finishing instinctively

He's low on confidence at the moment. He needs a couple of goals before he can finish instinctively.
He tried to bring it under better control, but the first touch was gash.

The more concerning one for me was when Clarke chased and fought for that ball down the right towards the end, busted a gut to get space to whip an incredible ball across the 6 yard box, and Hirst hadn't bothered to make a run, just jogged into the box, if he had sprinted in with Clarke he would have had a tap in. I know we were 3-0 down so it makes little difference, but Hirst had only been on for half an hour and he just isn't doing any of the stuff we need our striker to do at the moment.

Clarke was really good and played a couple of amazing crosses - the one towards the end where no one gambled for a tap in was an insult to Clarke and a profession as a striker. Only issue with clark when he moved onto the right wing is not having a left foot and trying to get into his right foot before losing the ball a few times. If McKenna prefers him there then a few weeks of left footed only training/shooting is needed.

Disagree
Burns played the wide right role and he is very one footed
Clarke really looked the part there last night imo

Clarke was pretty much the only one who didn’t give up after the first goal.

Credit to him after the stick he’s taken in the past.

Thought Clarke did fine when he switched flank but it's not his preference position so there's an elevated of square pegs in round holes.

For me it creates a conundrum for Saturday. He has definitely earned the right to play on Saturday imho but JP has to come back in his preferred position, so the right is the only place for him

Clarke is without doubt the current best option for the right side
McAteer is rubbish

I did a big swear when that happened. Everyone just stood watching whilst Clarke created a tap in opportunity.

I was born underwater, I dried out in the sun. I started humping volcanoes baby, when I was too young.

Similar position, probably a harder chance and look at the difference.

Clarke is a wonderful player, full of energy, quality, always progressive, not good going the other way, but works hard too.

We should be honest though.., 9/10 his end product doesn’t match his build up, it’s usually not a good final ball/shot etc

Guess he’d be premier league if he had that.., yet another player not worth what we paid .., but he should be starting, lovely to watch drifting past players and SO good to watch players who want to go forwards and attack.

Hope he gets a run now, maybe on the right .., McKenna needs to put the team above his pure principles .., a right footer on the right IS allowed

Thought Mcateer played ok last night but when you're playing a low block you need someone like Clarke who will repeatedly try and beat his man

I know it's just two minutes of highlights but no one's telling me that if whoever's currently playing on our right hand side makes the interception Burns did on the edge of our box, the ball will be crossed into the opposition box 9 seconds later.

Maybe SWE would, but currently that player would take a touch, wait, and then play it to O'Shea while the opposition organise their defence.

I'm very firmly on the side of the fence which says Hirst has been nowhere near good enough this season and I'd like to see Azon given a proper run now, but I do feel a bit sorry for him. Yes that chance he completely wasted was bad as was a pathetic non-attempt to get on the end of Clarke's ball in (which rather summed up the attitude of too many of the team last night), but the reaction of the crowd (clearly aimed directly at him) to those two incidents can't be helping someone who is obviously lacking confidence.

Can't blame people for getting frustrated, especially in the circumstances, but a shame players that have contributed so much for us are now subject to this, and a further shame that it all spells out that we're not far off things getting pretty toxic if we continue as we are.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

Harsh regarding end product if you're basing that on last night.

Put an in-swinging cross from the left onto Akpom's head 6 yards out, who headed wide.

Played Hirst in with an early low cross from the right - Hirst couldn't have asked for a better pass.

Played another low ball across the six yard box having got to the byline - Hirst and Philogene were on the edge of the box.

He's not going to cut in and bend one in the top corner on his left foot, I'll say that. He isn't a right winger really, but it's another sign of how muddled we are because we're shoe horning him and Philogene into the team.

I agree that the reaction to fluffing the chance probably isn't helpful, but I think it is completely fair for the crowd to show their anger at a striker not bothering to make a run and get on the end of a cross like that one Clarke put in. I would expect a player who is struggling for form to at least try and compensate with sheer effort, Hirst though seems to be both out of form and just not fancying it.

Is it? Clarke in the central tray 10 in the mould of Grealish or Maddison might be interesting.
