Interesting Tuesday morning for me... 09:43 - Nov 28 with 4946 views | _clive_baker_ | I've handed my notice in at work, just been put on immediate gardening leave. Never happened to me before, didn't expect it to now either. I'm not leaving for a competitor (I guess loosely, but not really). Emails and Slack disabled immediately. Not sure how I feel about it, although getting paid for the next 3 months to do nothing is something I can probably get used to. Bonkers.

I feel like a right idiot for not being delighted, but I kind of feel a bit annoyed. I'm sure I'll get over it pretty quickly. Should probably do something positive with the time.

Yeah, December will be a write off I'm sure. Jan & Feb might be an opportunity to do something positive. Perhaps I could do voluntary work or something. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
Interesting Tuesday morning for me... on 09:58 - Nov 28 with 3074 views | baxterbasics | Business culture can be brutal sometimes. People you might have come to consider friends suddenly tell you to sling your hook. Even if they have justifiable reasons it can still feel personal.

Interesting Tuesday morning for me... on 09:59 - Nov 28 with 3061 views | nodge_blue | I bet its quite a liberating feeling though. When I resigned the pandemic was just kicking off and they made me work my three months notice as there was loads to sort out because of the pandemic. That made it worse to be honest as I was disengaged but had lots of people wanting reports and option papers on stuff I wanted to leave behind. So gardening leave immediately isn't all that bad imo.

Interesting Tuesday morning for me... on 10:00 - Nov 28 with 3053 views | Basuco | I have heard of people not being allowed to take up their new job until after their notice period as well! Not sure that stands up in employment law though.
Interesting Tuesday morning for me... on 10:01 - Nov 28 with 3050 views | hype313 | I remember getting Gardening leave for 3 months in the June heatwave of 2003, still had full use of the company car and fuel card, spent 3 months on the beach at Dunwich and ended up looking like a Turkish sailor.

That's what they've suggested, although I'm still waiting for something in writing. TBH I've agreed a start date of the last week of February, so I'm fine to leave that. Just expected to be working where I was for my notice period, and to be honest I had a fair few bits I wanted to finish off before I went. Feel bad for some colleagues who will have to pick up the pieces as that wasn't ever the intention. I'm not really sure what the rationale is, I'm still getting paid, I would've thought they would get their pound of flesh from me. I have access to a lot of sensitive information, but I'm not going anywhere where it would be of any use.
Interesting Tuesday morning for me... on 10:09 - Nov 28 with 2994 views | Steve_M | Well, firstly congratulations. Secondly, gardening leave is a bit of a weird experience but you'll soon get used to it, certainly changed my mind as to how I could enjoy retirement without any of the work pressure around. I at least had a month of working first, although I took a week's leave in that time which was more than enough time to mentally come to terms with leaving somewhere I had been for a long time. Plus it was March and April this year so I only missed matches when I was out of the country. I suppose missing December at work does mean missing out on some food stuff too. One tip though, at least do enough stuff that's slightly different so you don't feel like you've wasted the time. I did get towards the end of the second month and feel like I was wasting some weeks.

Sounds like they are not happy you are leaving! Take it as a compliment. You could do every home and away game while off as well.

Interesting Tuesday morning for me... on 10:15 - Nov 28 with 2935 views | Meadowlark | Will you get an invitation to the work's Christmas party? It would be rude not to, as you're still employed. (And they'll be counting you as an employee when they deduct the costs for tax!)

Thanks, that's good advice. I guess I don't want to get to the end of it and think I've done little but vegetate, eat and drink a lot and put on weight. I've been in continuous education then employment since I was 5, my only ever time off has been school holidays and annual leave. I have no idea what to do with myself. Not a woe is me story by any stretch, I appreciate it's a good problem to have.

OU short course or something similar? which can be p/t as well as short. Have never regretted doing their Arts Foundation course when I had to take a year out in the 70s to rest my back, felt that at least I wasn't wasting time. In fact it turned out to be an 'opportunity' as I loved it so much I went on to get a degree.

If your any good with a paint brush I’ve got decorating to do, a spare room ( already done) & the pools still at 28deg. Warmer here than the UK, & 20€ flight in to the Christano Ronaldo airport in 3.5 hrs. See you soon?

This time of year, the food banks / FIND could probably do with the voluntary help. All the best.
