While not a book, one of my favourite authors James Barclay has this on his website:-

I am, and will always be, an Ipswich Town FC supporter.

Stardust *

Victoria: Do you know, Humphrey's going all the way to Ipswich to buy me a ring.
Tristan: Ipswich? Victoria I'm talking about London or Paris or... A ring? Why is he... What kind of a ring?
Victoria: The word is he's planning to propose to me on my birthday.
Tristan: [crestfallen] He's going to... And you're gonna say yes?
Victoria: [laughs] Well I can't exactly say no after he's gone all the way to Ipswich.
Tristan: "All the way to Ipswich"? Victoria, for your hand in marriage, I'd cross oceans or continents.

*Well it's in the film version, I assume it is in the book too, but not read it.

Running with the firm by James Bannon (undercover policeman who got in with Millwall in the 80's). There is a chapter called Ipswich away.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

Fever Pitch has a chapter on the 1978 cup final and so, of course, mentions Ipswich.

And the film features a shot of the Orwell Bridge.

As does 'The Numbers Station', John Cusask ends up fighting for his life and that of a girl he likes at Bentwaters. The opening and closing credits feature Orwell Bridge from above.

Patricia Highsmith (one of the greatest crime writers of all time - Strangers On A Train, The Talented Mr Ripley) lived in Earl Soham in the Sixties and The Suspension Of Mercy is based in Suffolk.

And George Orwell's A Clergymen's Daughter is based in Southwold, where he lived for a time. And, yes, his name is based on the River Orwell - his real name was Eric Blair. True story...
