So quickly after Dickie Davis, all the old legends are dropping off the perch. Although Motty was only 77, which isn't that old these days. Shame, voice of a generation.
Very sad news this. I got his autograph at PR once, think it was a week or so before we played Man Utd in the cup (1988?), think it was Millwall at home.
He was standing in Churchman's doing his homework.
Motty was the best because his commentary was always honest and selfless without all the fake intonations and pauses that most modern commentators seem to put into their commentary all ..... the ............TIIIIIIIMMMMME!!!
RIP Motty.

If your 50's/60 years old, he was indeed our voice of football, like Gerry Harrison was locally. I think Ronnie Radfords' goal was in his first game? He did donate a load of stuff to Pat Godbold for her archives, match notes , etc. Doesn't seem like he retired long ago. RIP Sir.

I'm pretty sure that was his first commentary on television too!
He elevated even the most dull of matches with his natural enthusiasm for the game. FA Cups, World Cups and even the FIFA games will never sound so good again.
RIP to a legend and a gentleman. All things must pass.
Being the age I am, he was the main “long-serving” commentator I listened to growing up as I am too young to fully remember Brian Moore or Barry Davies. This is sad news, especially knowing the fondness he had for Ipswich Town. His death has come less than four months after Ronnie Radford passed away.
Perhaps not his finest piece of commentary but I’ll always find this funny:
R.I.P.
