But as somebody who lived in that part of the world, good luck to Stortford getting out onto the A1 as they head north via the A507 through Buntingford and Baldock - a road that defies its category.

To be fair, if you're going north properly from there, as they will be, there's no reason not to use the M11 and new A14.

Agreed - but perhaps not on a holiday weekend

A derby that's not happening on 22:41 - Jun 16 with 2001 views | BtreeBlueBlood | Any there’s Stansted FC Moved out of the essex league to the midlands league! They are looking off pulling out of all competitions! They can’t afford the travels. The National league south has 3 relegated teams from the national league and the north gets 1. Surely this is where the teams get put into each league- not kicking teams which are in each into another.

550 mile round trip to Blyth Spartans. They'll probably play on a Tuesday night.

Problem is London teams isn't it? Probably need National League North, South and London below the National League

To clarify they've not been moved to the "midlands league", Stansted are moving to the Spartan South Midlands League, where they go to Herts Beds and Bucks. It's not as if they have to go to the other side of Birmingham! [Post edited 17 Jun 2023 14:26]

Us southern based clubs can expect fixtures as far apart as Suffolk and Devon whereas geographical speaking the North is a lot more compact. (If that makes sense)

The team I played for in my youth (a few years ago ) played in the South Midlands League. My team were one of the most northernmost in the league and the most we had to travel was about 40 miles away. Not sure we'd have been that pleased with a trip to Stanstead though! As transport in England is basically configured North to South and generally either side of the Pennines, it almost makes more sense to have Eastern and Western regisons instead of North and South, were a lot of the travel will be cross country on the crap routes.

Shouldn’t be drawing a line on a map at all. Should be based in average distance to other grounds in the league, For exampleBishop Stortford is further north than Gloucester but I’m sure Stortford is further away from other northern teams than Gloucester.

But Gloucester City are in the Conference North too aren’t they? So that clearly is taken into account. There is a map which shows the North/South divide for the Conference North/South and it shows why BS got put in the North a lot clearer. Seem to remember Lowestoft complaining about the travelling because they were put in the North when they got promoted. Think the East/West idea is a good option, but there will be problems when Cumbrian sides have to travel to Truro and BS would still have to play Blyth. The non league system has become a lot more fluid in recent years, creating a 4 division step 3 which spread the travel better, and teams now are switched across those leagues to keep the geographical integrity rather than waiting for promotion & relegation to address it.

When Gloucester travelled North for games they drove past Worcester who were in NL South.
