For 2020/21 absolutely, was ludicrous that we gave him away and signed that Olly what’s his name and Keenan Bennetts … Marcus Evans.

Actually, Covid was more to blame. I'm sure Keane would have been kept on but for the situation going forward being unclear at that point.

We tried to sign him again in the summer of 2022 after Hirst went to Blackburn. McKenna does have a habit of maintaining his interest in long-term targets, Hirst and Stansfield two examples.

I like Keane and wanted him to stay but we should move on. He's not the right age profile now.

He's not even the most suitable striker at Preston we should sign. Emil Riis Jacobson would be the player we should be gunning for. Right size, age, style and scores goals.

We would be fleeced by Preston for a 30 year old striker, who would rapidly devalue over the next couple of seasons.

The only Muff in Town.

I'm not sure if people appreciate how hard it's going to be to get exactly the right player for the right money in January.

It's a sellers market, everyone wants strikers of course, so we might have to forego certain attributes, such as age.

I mean, if we get someone like Keane, and he scores half a dozen goals whilst Hirst is out, and we finish top 2, happy days, right?

Age of first team players signed since Kieran McKenna took charge:
23, 21, 29, 26, 27, 26, 22, 35, 21, 25, 27, 30, 24, 21, 21, 23, 25, 20, 25, 19, 22, 19

Why do people still think that we only sign players of one particular age profile?

I'd say it would be just fine to sign a 30-something that's going to shore up the chase for second half of the season. Doesn't need to be a long term prospect at this stage.

For once the loan market will be our friend and luckily we will also be very appealing with our position and our manager to attract the kind of loanee that is worthwhile.

What is with the obsession of signing former players on here? We are looking to move forward as a club, not backwards!!

I bet there's a few big clubs that would be happy for one of their fringe players to get some time playing for - and being coached by - the mighty KM.

It is partly players that fans are aware of having known them from their time here but it is also far from unknown in recent years (as well as much longer ago) ... Clarke, Luongo, Celina and plenty of examples from longer ago.

This is good data but I'd argue proves the point people are making in age profile. Only 5 of the 22 signing are over 26 (22%). Of those only 1 was in the last year (Luongo) and it's well documented that this was because we couldn't get Taylor at that point.

This summers signings:

25,24, 20, 22, 19, 19, 25. It's very clear. And Ashton also has said as much in that we've moved to a phase of recruitment where we can now bring younger players in which will have a resale value

It doesn't mean we will never sign a more experienced player where there is a need or like with Luongo where we miss a primary target. But our strategy is buying to grow value. Ashton did the same at Bristol City

Missed a story, I think. First reported we'd been interested in the summer 22 window (see end of Simpson story below). Opted to sign John-Jules instead at that point.
