McAuley Bid Turned Down
McAuley Bid Turned Down
Wednesday, 2nd Sep 2009 08:46

Town turned down a £1 million bid from Middlesbrough for central defender Gareth McAuley, according to reports on Teesside.

The former skipper was linked with Boro on Monday, but the fee on offer wasn’t sufficient to tempt the Blues into parting with the Northern Ireland international.

With the emergency loan window opening next Tuesday, the clubs could still come to an agreement whereby the former Leicester and Lincoln man moves to the Riverside on loan in the short-term with a view to a permanent move in January.

However, that may depend on the Blues landing another centre-half, with their move for Sheffield Wednesday’s Richard Wood having failed to progress as hoped yesterday.

wow ,if this is true £1m is a lot to turn down for McAuley , considering we were told we had to sell before we buy.

If we are to challenge in this league we need plenty of cover in all positions, and that means keeping players like McAuley.

should of got rid of him 1mill for a player that has probably had 5 good games in his whole town career is a bargain!!

I'd like him to stay. He played better against Preston, & hopefully has got over his dodgy start to the season - same as last year when after a poor start he was one of our better players. I'd like to see Bruce & McAuley in centre of defense. Not necessary to have a left footed centre back & I think Pim is not quite up to the mark.

"campowasgod", I'll try and take you seriously with that name! The sell before we buy thing was just hot air from Keane, thank god we have a shrewd manager now as opposed to Jim "tell the whole world how much cash I've got and what I'm up to" Magilton.

Middlesbrough's interest in McA is further proof (if it was needed) that he has the potential to be a quality player. I am pleased that we are looking to add a centre-back, but I really hope that we aren't actively looking to unload McA and this is just other clubs putting 2+2 together and sniffing around.

Keano should take the Money and run, McAuley is a below average player, and has cost us games, he is one of the worst centre halves i have seen in a town shirt, cant read the game, lacks concentration, and no commitment , get rid asap

he may be average but if we are to go up we need to keep our average players who can do a job!

ITFC Loyal - Don't seem to Loyal to me. McAuley was possibly our best outfield player by the end of the season. Oh how short peoples memories can be. Nice one RK I'd say 9/10 for that window. He will get better and alongside Bruce we'll be a tuff nut to crack with the right and left backs sorted.

Squad looks to have strength in depth. Just need the boo boys to shut the **** up for a few games and get behind the team.. what's the point of hurling abuse at our own players [that's RK's job!]

Wow - considering he's meant to be rubbish, £1m wasn't a suitable offer.

why on earth did we not take the money for this donkey, or at least sent him to qpr, could of sat there with that other muppet magilton,

I think it's unfair to judge him on the first few games of this season - I mean, the whole defence has been crap , what cover have they had had in front of them from midfield. It's been the midfield which has been a joke. I think McA in a SETTLED defence and team will be alright. Southgate knows a decent defender and if he was going to pay £1million, he must have seen something in McA.

"corshamblue" seems to be the only person with a bit of sense on here. Completely agree that McA was one of our best players last term and quite rightly has been one of the better centre halves in this division for a few season now.

Not sure why people get on his back, our problem is with the Full Backs not the Centre Backs, Pim is not good enough, and it should be Bruce and McA in the centre - FACT!

Shut up with the moaniong and get behind the team, If Middlesbrough were willing to splash £1mil on him then it shows other professionals in the game rate him, and there opinions are more saught after than a few Suffolk Clowns on here!

i first saw mac play against wolves last season and he was poor, and he hasnt improved, he looks so out of his depth, and he hasnt got any better, we cant really say what a settled side is as we have players out injured and are there other players due in, what about this wood from sheff wed, in the press they are saying done deal 700k, but nothing on official itfc.

Yeah, have to agree with BleedBlue and CorshamBlue - McAuley gets a lot of unfair stick from a lot of short-sighted fans. Yes he makes mistakes (doesn't EVERYONE??), but he did show some improvement against Preston, and like last season he will probably get better and better.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but let's have a little less moaning and a little more support! If the players are not performing well enough, Keano will sort them out - our job is to shout and sing and get the boys gee'd up on the pitch, not jeer them each time they put a foot wrong!!

"narrwichscum" - so you have been to 2 games in the past year then? You have sound ability to judge McA over two games then - idiot!

McAuley after a poor start last season was one of our better players, he will come good again the back four have been swapped about a bit so needs time to bed in the trouble with some of our so called fans they are too quick to boo and get onto players

maybe this is the confidence boost McA needs- a manager who values him at over £1m and interest from one of the top clubs in the league, lets hope he kicks on

I agree with alot of the posts, he just Average, and average won't get us promoted. And some of you must be watching a different player - 'potential to be a quality player' - how has anyone seen anything from him that shows that.

His distribution is woeful, he can't read the game, he hardly commands the back four, he fails to take responsibility and requires his junior centre half - Pim to bail him out every time says it all.

And peoples dislike of Pim really really annoys me. He is currently the best we have - compared to McAuley his distribution is superb, he actually wins headers both in his half and in the opposition boxes - hes comfortable on the ball. His commitment is unquestionable. Yet still that isn't enough for some people.

Pim needs a half decent partner and it isn't McAwful

He had a very dodgy start to last season but did come good tho..certainly not a captain.

hrj Dont believe this story im sure town would have taken 1 million
offer if it was on the table and used that money to buy another
centre back.

Not as ugly though as PIM.......

bleedblue added 12:54 - Sep 2
cwb91 - Pim did really well against Preston didn't he?! He isn't good enough.... Yet.
narrwichscum - I presume you have a visual diability then, as the games he played last season McA was arguably one of the best centre halves in the division.

I aint saying he is the answer and there is not one part of me that believes he is a Premiership standard centre back - could you imagine him trying to mark Rooney, Torres, Drogba?!? Laughable! But he is good enough for the Championship, he is still only 29, and is now a regular in the Northern Ireland Squad. Whats everyones beef with him!!

narrwichscum added 13:06 - Sep 2
bleedblue, look at the end of the day there has been no consistancy in the back four, for two seasons now, if they are going to keep him which looks like they are going to do ( unless loaned out ), we need to get the back four all singing of the same hymm sheet, the midfield i feel now is as good as we are going to get it, once norris is back it will be even better and where ever he decides to play civelli.

is that back four good enough to get us up this season, bruce has the passion, not sure about delaney, when will thatcher be back, and the talk about woods is he our player or not!!?

with regard to premiership there is no way our defence could cope, the beef is hes not consistant and makes mistakes, I work with a couple of leicester fans and they were so glad to of got rid of him,
