McAuley Again Linked With Blades
McAuley Again Linked With Blades
Friday, 11th Sep 2009 08:48

Sheffield United are again reported to be keen on signing Town central defender Gareth McAuley on loan. Earlier in the week, the Blades and Middlesbrough were both linked with the Northern Irishman.

The South Yorkshire club are said to see McAuley as a replacement for Matthew Kilgallon, who is reportedly on his way to either Newcastle or Wigan, although a move to the Premier League Latics couldn’t take place until the transfer window opens again in January.

Although it wouldn’t be too much of a surprise to see McAuley move on, it’s unlikely that Town would allow the 29-year-old to depart without first signing another senior central defender on loan.

Close to the end of the transfer window, the Blues were chasing Sheffield Wednesday’s Richard Wood, but the Owls now appear confident that their former captain will sign a new contract at Hillsborough.

Oops blank post. I agree he's quality, not worth the hassel of settling in another defender.

This would be crazy. We have no cover if he goes. Unless keane is bringing someone else in!

not been brilliant lately but generally is a good player and him and bruce could go far at portman road, keep hold of him for now and see what happens, he must be pissd off that bruce is now our captain but bruce deserves it :)

Yes he is a good defender but his distribution is poor. During the Preston game everything was coming out via the youngsters alongside him. I think RK expects a senior professional to take charge in these situations and if McCauly cannot bring this to his game he is on the way out.

frenchblue, your post at 10.04 was complete and utter rubbish, but your post at 10.09 was spot on the money ;)

I agree with you but, cant let him go if we ain't got a replacement.

GM is a solid defender who apart from a slow start to both this and last season has done ok- why loan him out unless there is a replacement loan coming in? After all Pim and Smith are not the finished article.

I was dissapointed with the lads poor start but after having the armband removed looks a different player, it seemed that the captaincy was too much for him ,it would seem that he has difficulty multitasking, looked a different player against Preston, distribution was not the best but with a simpler task load that should improve...keep him but there is however always room for a QUALITY center half.

Big fish - "if it is not broken dont fix it advice RK." Are you all mad? Two points from five games, Town sitting in the relegation zone, at least three of the goals we have conceded were solely his fault and "it is not broken"?! The world has gone made, I don't care which way the transfer fee goes, just get rid of him!

Im not usually criticle of players but i struggle to see what is good about McAuley . Deent Centre halfs should have strength, pace, commitment and leadership. I have yet to see McAuley portray these skills this season although i agree he had a decent season last term. In fact at the moment his performances have lacked committment and desire which is a real concern. I think RK must have seen this and I would not be at all surprised if we let him go providing we get a better player in first.

Most of the posts on here say that GM is quality but has a few bad games !
Quality players should not have bad games .
Come on , he had 15 bad games out of 35 last season (mostly at the start) and 4 out of 5 this season . Thats not quality , its inconsistency .
His driven balls to our forwards are a joke - he can overhit a pass by half a pitch!!! then we all moan at Priskin and Stead - they have no chance.
Pim , Bruce , Smith , Delaney.... all can play CB ,one more (perhaps Wood) and we dont need him.
No brainer.

BIGFISH are you for real or was that a comedy post? 'if it aint broke dont fix it' sitting 2nd bottom of the table sounds to me as if it is broke.
I seriously cannot believe how many of you who think he is quality?
Take ya blinkers off and let me tell ya 'GARETH MCAULEY IS SH*T' there is no two ways about it! I for onwe would be happier to see pim and smith there all season - no we wouldnt get promoted but it would set us in great stead for next year with them two having a full campaogn to learn!

Although a 'real' centre half would be the best option. If Alex Bruce had a better partner he would also be twice the player. You will not find anyone more commited to the cause than him and his passion needs to be replicated byt the other 9 outfielders!

Did I mention that GM was SH*T

And again I ask all those who want to get rid, only slightly louder .... If the Big G is so poor, why are 2 of the best teams in the division after him??

Dobbie73 I don't know why they are after him, but having seen all his performances this season I would let him go on loan with a view to a million in Jan and use the alternatives we have. We should do as I believe Keane is and look at other options. Some Premier league teams are over loaded with center backs and I'm sure we'd get better than Mc in from them.

Personally I wouldnt mind GM going but i would rather keep him incase we are in a situation when our regular centre backs are injured. To be honest I would rather see bruce and either smith or pim at the back (rather smith than pim though) with thatcher and wright either side of them (once they are match fit). I have to admit though that GM has improved slightly since he has had the captaincy removed and given to bruce. Lets hope that RK makes the right decision so that it doesnt come back to haunt us later on this season. UTT
