Wickham in England Squad
Wickham in England Squad
Thursday, 8th Oct 2009 15:23

Striker Connor Wickham has been included in the England squad for their UEFA European U17 Championships first qualifying round group games. The matches, in Baku, Azerbaijan, are against the hosts, Serbia and Kazakhstan and will be played between October 26th and 31st.

The games clash with Town’s league match against Derby County and the Blues could withdraw the 16-year-old from the England squad if he is required for first team duty.

Earlier in the season, Wickham was pulled out of the England U17 squad playing in a friendly tournament in the Midlands to play in the games against Peterborough and Preston and last season Town withdrew him from an U16 party so he could make his senior debut against Doncaster.

Wickham has already won four caps at U17 level, scoring one goal, having played at the Nordic Tournament in Denmark in 2008 in which England annually field an U16 squad despite the competition being for the older age group.

England U17s: Benik Afobe (Arsenal), Ross Barkley (Everton), Saido Berahino (West Bromwich Albion), Jack Butland (Birmingham City), Nathaniel Chalobah (Chelsea), Luke Garbutt (Everton), Sam Johnstone (Manchester United), William Keane (Manchester United), Louis Laing (Sunderland), Josh McEachran (Chelsea), Ravel Morrison (Manchester United), Bruno Pilatos (Middlesbrough), Jack Robinson (Liverpool), George Thorne (West Bromwich Albion), Tom Thorpe (Manchester United), Connor Wickham (Ipswich Town), Luke Williams (Middlesbrough), Andre Wisdom (Liverpool).

Also agreed....he is already a very good player. BUT we wouldn't need him if these "loan" signings came to fruition.......where the f**k are they? Two players (hopefully a CB and CF) were meant to be coming on board in the two week break.....we are at the end of the first week and it's all gone quiet again...what a shock!!!...........I suppose we'll sign someone next Friday, expect him to bed in immediately and score a hat-trick against Swansea the following day??????

Yep we do need him but the bad news is

On this occasion Ipswich cannot withdraw him.

They could before as they were only friendlys; but my understanding is a club cannot withdraw a player when it is a UEFA or FIFA qualifier

Good to see a Town youth player amongst the youths of Man Utd, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal etc

I don't think Wickham should be given a run in the first team at the moment, as he is only 16-years-old and the pressure on him probably wouldn't do him any good. Let him play for England U17 and make some appearances for our first team, perhaps as a substitute when (and if!) things are going well. Hopefully better times are round the corner, which would be more beneficial to his development.

Posh plan Town raid - Daily Mirror
Peterborough are hoping to sign Ipswich defender Gareth McAuley on loan. Would McAuley be a good signing for Posh?
Taken from SKY site? Something may be happening with our two loan signings!!!!

Agree Hadleigh no sign of the players we are suppose to get in during international break---correct no point in getting two in on Friday for the Swansea game

Prozach...was Billy Clarke given the same amount of opportunity as Bowditch and Richards? He has already got on the scoresheet for Blackpool this year, who would have thought a year ago that we would have let him go and that Blackpool would be above us in the table (or even in the same league). But good to see Wickham in amongst the Premiership players, only West Brom and Middlesborough as Championship company - both those two were in the league above last year. There are some parts of the club that still excel.

Don't start me off about being given chances.....Jordan Rhodes....say no more!
Except that IMO that was Keanes biggest crime.......so far!!!!

Well done Connor lad, hope you get an opportunity for us unlike the other youngsters!!
