Cardiff Linked With Garvan Move
Cardiff Linked With Garvan Move
Wednesday, 11th Nov 2009 00:24

Cardiff City want to take out-of-favour midfielder Owen Garvan on loan with a view to signing him on a permanent basis, according to a tabloid newspaper. Garvan hasn’t played for Town since the 2-0 defeat at West Brom in August.

The 21-year-old, who is set to play for the Irish U21s this weekend, recently turned down a loan move to League One Colchester United.

Callumgarryskeemer I'd love to see you say all your pointless moaning to Roy keanes face! Not too sure you'd be as gobby after that!

Please please say that this is just paper talk. Garvan should stay. I would completely understand if he were to leave however after whats gone on.

blueherts...how do you know he has poor management skills while we have two players moving to the club because of the manager? Garvan has been very poor... I have watched him in reserve games, and if anyone else did he was the worst there. He gives the ball away constantly can pass 40 yards but not 10 won't put in a tackle and is too slow. Trotter at least gets stuck in and how hard could it be playing with 20,000 people on his back!

I've been hoping that all the Garvan bashing in the press from Keane was just to a get a reaction from the lad. Surely Keane realises Garvan is pure talent. All this rubbish I'm reading about he's slow etc. Believe me if you've got a midfielder who can slow a game down rather than speed it up you've got a player on your hands and this lad could do it a championship level when he was 18. Could Glen Hoddle or Matt le Tissier charge around the pitch? NO, but they could play at a different pace to the other 20 players on the pitch because they had more talent and more brains. Garvan is the same - the best player at the club by far and if Keane gets rid of him it shows the type of football and footballer that the current regime are going to promote. Roy Keane is flushing our footballing heritage along with our best young players down the pan.

Happily, he'd get a neck ache looking up at me with his gay stare.

I can't think what has happened to Garvan, or why he has been shunned. He's my favourite player with good reason. Apart from a couple of off games, I still think he is reliable, consistent, intelligent and far superior to any of the current midfield players. It's sad and I remain puzzled.

The Owen Garvan debate is a very interesting one....... below is the view of David Pleat given a couple of seasons or so ago. Pleat even valued him between £1 & £1.5 million.

"Garvan can pass accurately short and long but what has particularly impressed me is his ability to shield possession, a quality not always seen in players from the British Isles. When tackles fly in or he is hounded by an opponent he has the composure to move and keep the ball.

He likes to shoot and can hit fierce drives from the edge of the box. He will get stronger from playing consistently in the Championship but already he can look after himself. Although still slim he shows determination and a willingness to put his foot into tackles against stronger and more experienced players.

When I first saw Garvan I wondered whether he was fully tuned in to defensive responsibilities. Balls got played behind him, I thought he was slow to react and my first instinct was that he lacked pace. But he reacts swiftly now when Ipswich lose possession and, having watched him closely, I can see he has enough speed. A slightly ugly duckling running style can make him appear sluggish at times."

Hmmmmmm...

Now do we rate David Pleat as a judge of players or not?

Totally agree with Fenblue ! Garvan has talent and is creative . Just wish the manager could bring on talent rather than destroy !

Garvan is the last Irishman I want to see leave this club. He is pure class, (almost) always improves the team (unlike any recent signings except Leadbitter). He has been treated abysmally by Keane and for this reason alone I am in the anti Keane camp.
For years we've seen our best young players leave the club, and as depressing as it has been it has always been to balance the books. The financial scenario has changed and in comes Keane and he ships out the most promising youngsters (Haynes and Rhodes) for pitifully small fees. Marcus Evans and Clegg MUST act to prevent the most talented of the lot (Garvan) going the same way.

Keane's reputation is enough for me to KNOW he has treated him bad. Like the rest of the players.

Wow the forums are better than the discussions on the news, jeese. So many people have said such a load of bullsh*t in this. How do you know about Keane's man management? Shut up unless you know what you're on about.

Everyone who saw Garvan in the reserves has blatantly said there is a huge amount to be improved in on the pitch, and I strongly believe his attitude is his most questionable attribute.

Yes, he has talent, but I wouldn't care to see him go. If he sorts himself out, attitude wise then perhaps he still could be in Ipswich's plans, but I am pretty confident he'll be gone in January.

(and people saying Keane has treated Garvan unfairly, just be quiet, please)

Remember Ian Westlake or Gavin Williams? A lot of fans thought these lads were the bees knees... same with Garvan. I feel really sorry for the lad and also that the club have missed out on a prospect but the boy hasn't come on and there are players in front of him and other players not as talented but hungrier - they want it more... I hope it works out for him wherever he goes. He can pass a ball, but for me doesn't get his foot in and has no real pace. He also hasn't scored enough goals from midfield, the odd one or two.

Garvan's attitude is wrong because he doesn't want to play for Keane. Who can blame him?

UEFA81 added 21:07 - Nov 11
Actually his attitude is right - who'd want to play for him?

hmm, not sure about this. Never been a huge OG fan. Think he's ok player a little to weak in the tackle for my liking , but sometimes awsome spraying passes here, there and everywhere and sparking life into dull games. However for me he could've been alot better than he is. When he first came on the scene he had that buzz, that ability i spoke about earlier but, in my opinion he has't been that player consistantly enough even under Jim. I always thought he had the potential to be, not as good as, but a Gerrard type player but he just did'nt push on. A new challenge may be what he needs.

I don't think we need a scouts report from pleat which is 3 years old. It's outdated, and would be written differently if Pleat had watched him play for the last year.

I reiterate, he is not the calibre of player that can take us to the top flight. That is the squad that Roy is charged with building. However, I wouldn't want him to leave without a replacement coming in first. And not Trotter, nor Quinn, who are both really poor players - i would rather Garvan.

I don't have time for players that earn lots of cash but also need a hug from the manager before a match. Man up. If Garvan doesn't want to fight for his place, he doesn't get a place. We're a top club in England, you don't just walk in because you looked good when you were 18. You show hunger, desire, passion, and class.

Tell Dave Jones he can have Garvan on one condition......................................................................................................... That he takes Lee Martin with him. He is dogger.

Oxblue added 21:31 - Nov 11
No question Garvan looks a little slow and lacks a little bit at times, but he is always passionate about the shirt and he would be our top scorer had he started at least 3/4 of our games.
