Lee-Barrett Delighted to Make Debut
Lee-Barrett Delighted to Make Debut
Monday, 30th Nov 2009 09:04

Sub keeper Arran Lee-Barrett was delighted to make his surprise Town debut against his old club Cardiff as the Blues recorded their first away win of the season. Lee-Barrett was with the Welshmen from 2003 to 2005.

Lee-Barrett, who came on as a 25th minute sub for Richard Wright, joined the Bluebirds after leaving Norwich City’s youth set-up, having been a schoolboy with the Blues, his hometown club. The keeper also spent time at Coventry without making appearances but was a regular at Hartlepool for two seasons before being released in the summer and also played in the Conference with Weymouth early in his career.

The 25-year-old was pleased to make his Town bow and to get the win against one of his old clubs: “Football can be such a funny game. I spent two-and-a-half years at Cardiff, without ever playing a league game, and now I've ended up playing against them!

“I suppose I wouldn't even have been on the bench, if Asmir had still been with us. I was obviously disappointed to be left out of the squad, but you just have to stay professional.

“It was unfortunate that Richard Wright picked up a knee injury, but I'm very happy that we managed to hold onto our lead and win the game. It's brilliant for the club.”

If Richard Wright’s knee injury is serious Town may try to get special dispensation to bring in another keeper on loan, although with the more experienced Lee-Barrett and youngster Ian McLoughlin both on professional contracts, that permission may not be granted.

Lee-Barrett’s deal is up in January when former Bohemians keeper Brian Murphy officially joins the club, but he is hopeful of winning new terms: “I don't know whether I'll get an extension. I just have to try and impress, and see what happens. If I get the opportunity to stay, then I'd take it. But who knows?”

Give the guy a break. There is no shame in being a reserve goalie it goes with the territory. He did well against one of the divisions top strike forces, he got his chance and took it - it shows he is made of the right stuff.

Yes, he looked a little bit nervous at times yesterday, but then he'd come off the bench for his Championship debut against one of the more renowned strike forces in the division. He kept everything out, except for their absolute screamer of a goal (which I doubt Begovic or Wright would have stopped either). The defence was so solid he wasn't required to do anything dramatic. He was active and vocal, shouting directions to the players. He came over and interacted with the fans when Town scored.
Overall fairly impressed, a quiet performance but did well.

Don't think we'll be seeing Becovic again. Facing Wayne Rooney is probably more appealing. Would open him back with open arms though, decent keeps and right attitude as well.
Lets hope things start to go our way, judging by yesterday there may be hope yet!
Bit quiet from the anti keanos today? Good riddence

to be honest, he had nothing to do in the second apart from kicking the ball, i don't think chopra had a shot, but well done on taking on the challenge.

He did very well and had no chance of stopping the goal. Even Begovic wouldn't have got to that.

I didn't realise he was from the Norwich youth.

Did well and took his chance - Not sure any keeper would have stopped that goal. 'Kin hell - that was a screamer! Murphy is meant to be a decent pair of gloves so lets see what happens - Begovic would be a great No1 but it's not going to happen.

Did Barrett-Lee look confident enough earn his his name on the team sheet for Bristol City?? I've seen James Hollman train him before the home matches - but what did he look like in the actual match?? Was his kicking okay? Command of the box and defence? Claiming Corners? I want to know if this top stopper deserves a future at Ipswich.. his home town club!

Lightingboy at last something positive from you backing one of Keano's signings, I am glad you have come on board.
Devontractorboy, having Wrighty out injured has probably turned our season round.

Not good at kicking to begin with but improved as the game went on. Made a couple of good punches, including one where he punched Bothroyd in the face! ha!
