Keane: No Deals Imminent
Keane: No Deals Imminent
Saturday, 10th Jul 2010 10:01

Town manager Roy Keane says no transfers in or out of Portman Road are imminent but feels that the same is true for many other clubs at this stage of the summer. Keane expects more business to take place nearer to the start of the season.

The Blues boss says there is plenty of talk between managers even if there are very few actual moves: “It’s very quiet. I think it’s been the same for lots of clubs, particularly in the Championship, I don’t think there’s too much money around.

“There are plenty of phone calls going on. I’ve had a few calls about some of my players, I’ve made enquiries for some other players and it’s fun and games at the moment.”

Keane says that it’s likely that some of his fringe players will move on before he adds to his squad with owner and chairman Marcus Evans determined to trim the Portman Road wage bill: “I don’t think anything will happen over the next few weeks and I’ve got a decent squad as it is, but it’s getting the balance of the squad right.

“I’m fine for numbers but there are one or two areas I’d like to strengthen and until I move one or two players out, I don’t see any player coming to Ipswich in the next week or two.”

However, the Town manager says that deals sometimes come out of the blue: “The strange thing about football is that things can change very quickly, don’t be surprised if something happens tomorrow. I can’t predict what will happen.

“As I say, there are lots of phone calls and lots of enquiries coming into the club for some of our players and I’ve spoken to one or two managers about potentially bringing in one or two targets, but that’s all it is at the moment, a few phone calls.

“I’m pleased with the players, pleased with the squad, the numbers we have and I’m in no mad rush to strengthen. The players are working hard, the spirit’s good and I’m very lucky I’m working with some good players.”

Keane says that Crystal Palace have made no firm offer for midfielder Owen Garvan, despite George Burley confirming his interest yesterday: “I think there have been stories of offers being in for some of our players, but there’s been no offer made for Owen Garvan.

“Managers have conversations every day about players. I’ve done the same, I’ve been doing it this morning, but in terms of concrete offers for Owen Garvan, it’s certainly not true, but there’s no surprise there in terms of speculation.”

Some commentors on here still seem to be missing the point that both Clegg and Keane keep making. Until we get some players off the wagebill, we cannot sign anyone as we need to keep costs down although the money for the fees is available. Yes Keane did say he wanted 4 or 5 players in and ideally wanted them before preseason, however at that time it looked certain that Bruce and Stead were leaving however Cov and Leicester changing their managers have scuppered the deals.
All we can do is wait and hope that we can offload 2 or 3, even on loan, to be able to buy in a goalscorer and rightback, if not we will just have to go witth what we have now

It seems to me that alot of the players that we need to off load are the ones that Roy has bought to the club. As quiet rightly pointed out by Mark, by the time we get rid of these players the main targets will either have been signed elsewhere or settled under new managers. Anybody arriving at that stage is also going to have very little preseason with the other squad members. This is probably not all Keanes fault as I for one understand that M.E. is not going to continue buying players without getting rid of some. There may also be a certain amount of distrust in his ability to bring in the right players and if we have the start to this season as last, he won't be here anyway! Civelli will seem like a new player if he can get match fit and regain his touch and confidence. I for one only hope that he decides on his best 18 players and sticks with them in their best positions on the park.

The reason we have a big squad, is because Roy Keane & Jim sigined to many players who weren't up to it on big wages. We were better off when didn't have any money! Last season Keane wasted the money he had, no good complaining now. Who's going to what to sigin the like's of Martin when they are on big wages. It's time we got in a manager who can find good young players lower leauge, because the last 3 seasons under clegg & evans haven't worked, we have gone backwards. Need to get an experinced manager we a proven track recorded, If Joe Royle had this kind of money that Jim & Roy had, he would have us promoted in two seasons.

Quite right Bobby Petta - if only we had the £5m Keane wasted last year, which showed he hasn't got a clue in assessing a players ability

Get your facts straight of the eight players listed only two were signed by keane healy who only cost 50,000 and is probally on low wages any way. And the other one was Martin who hasnt performed and probally was a waste of money. Its ok for people to say get players in if reports are true pablo is on nearlly 12,000 a week this is 624,000 this year alone.if you say that the other players namely Alex Bruce, Owen Garvan, Alan Quinn, Jon Stead, Lee Martin, Kevin Lisbie are on a average of 7,000 each a week thats a total of 42,000 a week town are paying per week for average players or 2 million pound a season. So if you can get these of the books that would free up hell of a lot of money to get in two or three quality signings. i am afraid we all have to be patient. It is not keanes fault these players were put on long contracts was previous managment so stop blaming him for every thing.

Here's a thought. Maybe no new signings is a good thing. Love or loathe RK we can't deny that post christmas our results were better than many teams in the league. Pre christmas we all had very wide ranging opinions on our best side and the team changed every game, and the results were awful. RK has worked with these players for 12 months and if he doesn't know his first team squad by now he has no right to call himself a manager. So lets show some support for the 30 players that are here instead of moaning about the two or three that we haven't signed. Good luck for the new season guys - make us proud.

Lot of 'probablies' and 'ifs' in there steed. Sounds like your facts are a bit shakey too! Martin, probably a waste of money, definately a waste of money and why was he given such a long contract under Keane? Bet he isn't on lower wages? If he wasn't a waste of money then the coaching must be rubbish as he hasn't performed for Town yet as many of the older players haven't either. Except Leadbitter, most of what RK has bought hasn't been good. His loan signings have been a little better, Colback and for a spell Murphy.
Don't think anybody is arguing about getting some of the players off the books and reduce the wage bill to get in replacement players if you read the last 3 posts (going by his track record I would not like to say 'quality signings' though).

steed - i think the players you listed as being on £7000 a week is a lot higher, as haynes was on 10,000 a week.
also someone said lee martin was a waste of money and a bad buy, i agree but i can see why roy signed him. can you be rubbish and be breaking into the man utd side like he was???

Chopra is proven quality at this level in the playoffs every chance Cardiff made was through Chopra. I think our squad is good enough to challange for promotion but I think we need one big signing i.e Chopra in order to instill faith back into our doubting fans. We should only look for one signing though as stability and confidence is the key. If you think about it last season we created the most chances but didn't take them, this could be down to a confidence issue and certainly with a large section of the fans constantly moaning I can see why there would be a lack of confidence. All we need for this squad to succeed is a dominant preseason to build up the confidence and belief among the players and the fans, this will give us a successful start to the campaign and if you think about it thats all that we missed last season.
We will finish a lot higher this coming season, mark my words!
Keep the faith

Greetings fellow Town fans !!!! I am sitting here at Gatwick waiting for my flight and I couldn't resist getting the laptop out and seeing if any of you missed me.

But what do I see? Keane giving in and basically admitting that he has failed as a manager and cannot attract any players to this once great club of ours. Despite his alledged "big name" standing in the game, nothing is happening and he is indicating that nothing will happen in the next few weeks either. I am so thankful we have this diwmit in charge of our team !!!! I think Keano and the tealady need to swap places.

I understand that Evans is saying we need to move out some squad players before bringing new ones in, but as we are unlikely to be able to move out many/any of those transfer listed then realistically as a fan I am pessimistic about next season. We looked like we were going down until D.Murphy and D.Healy joined on loan in January, resulting in an improvement in form. Without those two, Colback, Rosenior or D.Wright then I think we can be pleased with a mid-table finish next season unless new blood comes in. Forget promotion and Marcus Evans can forget a Premier League windfall.

If the position is that we need to sell before buying, I think we should have moved Keane out (as he has always had big money to spend) and bring in a manager who knows the Championship inside and out and wheel and deal for us, as well as man managing the existing squad to get the best out of them.

its not all down to keane for not bringing these players through the door, people on here see what they want to, and the blame is always at keane's door and its shouldnt be. Clegg and evans are as much to blame as well.

Agree fully Leadbitter6! Keane agrees with 2 players they want to sign for us. Over to ME & SC to sort out the financial aspects. Deals fall through due to ME & SC not being happy with the Financial aspects? How can Keane get the blame. 8 players on the Transfer List is a rumour as the club have not admitted to it officially. What it should do though is give these players a kick up the A..e and make them fight for there places. Both warm up games have been good for fitness and scoring 15 goals will be good for moral.

Once & for all stop slagging Keane off and get behind The Manager & The Team!

Here's to sucessful 2010-11 Season!

You don't seem to get the point.ME must be totally pissed off at Keane having wasted so much money last year - a business man (or anyone alse come to that) is going to be very wary of a repeat scenario.

CobboldNeal added 22:24 - Jul 10
Well if we start with the same squad as last season (minus the loans) and start as poorly as last season maybe ME will replace RK before Christmas (for better or for worse). But if we make a decent start surely we must have a good shot at to top six spot if we can get in a couple of loanees of similar quality to Colback last season.

generalpublic added 23:17 - Jul 10
dont see it myself. even at the height of last season we couldnt string a decent run of wins together and do not think you can draw your wayinto the playoffs. as last year proves.so an average mid table season if we are lucky and do not get a run of injuries to the 2-3 semi decent players we have

ipswichfrancis added 23:53 - Jul 10
RK is the one who brought in some high-paying players who couldn't deliver, RK increased the wage bill for the club, it seems ME is hinting RK to clear up his mess.... it's the same old story, RK wanting to offload players and build a better squad... just how last season painted out, average players were released with no capable replacements in the end... i hope i'm wrong but this season looks bleak than the last one..... thanks to RK for bringing such 'honours' and 'excitement' to the club......

A point a lot of people seem to be missing is Keane needs to off load, BUT actually doing it is another thing, if players want to sit tight and rake in a wage or no other club wants or can afford them ,im afraid the dead wood will remain as a burden to any progress.
