 Fülöp Completes Move
Fülöp Completes Move
Thursday, 5th Aug 2010 12:08

Town have completed the signing of Sunderland keeper Márton Fülöp on a two-year deal. The Hungarian international, who trained with his new team-mates this morning, is understood to have moved for a fee of £750,000.

An international team-mate and close friend of Town striker Tamás Priskin, Fülöp started his career with MTK Hungaria during which time he went on loan to Elöre and Siófok, also in his homeland.

After a three-day trial in July 2004, the 6ft 5in tall keeper joined Spurs. In 2004/05 he spent time on loan at Chesterfield, then the following season moved on to Coventry on a similar basis.

In November 2006 he joined Roy Keane’s Sunderland, making his move to the Stadium of Light a permanent one in the following January for a fee of £900,000.

Fulop, who has won 21 Hungarian caps, moved on loan to Leicester in August 2007 and was expected to stay with the Foxes until the end of the season. However, after the clubs failed to agree a fee for his permanent move to the Walkers Stadium in the following January — Leicester offered £1 million, Sunderland wanted £3 million — he returned to Wearside.

In February 2008 he briefly joined Stoke on loan but was recalled after four days to cover an injury at Sunderland, however, the Potters and Black Cats agreed a £3 million fee that summer but the move eventually broke down.

Last season Fülöp made only 14 appearances for the Black Cats with Craig Gordon the first choice and Trevor Carson the regular sub. More recently Belgian U21 international Simon Mignolet has also moved to the Stadium of Light. Gordon suffered a broken arm in pre-season and Bruce is looking to sign another senior keeper.

Towards the end of the 2009/10 campaign Fülöp joined Manchester City on an emergency loan basis as cover for the injured Shay Given, but his move to Eastlands was never expected to stretch beyond the final games of the Premier League season.

Blues boss Roy Keane has stated that he likes to have three keepers in his squad and with Richard Wright departing in the summer wanted an additional glovesman to compete with Brian Murphy and Arran Lee-Barrett. TWTD first reported the Blues’ interest in Fülöp in May.

Fülöp, who had a year left on his Sunderland contact, had also been linked with newly-promoted La Liga side Hercules but he understood to have turned down the move to Spain. Anderlecht and Olympiakos were also reportedly interested earlier in the summer, along with a number of Premier League sides, West Brom and Fulham believed to be amongst them.

Welcome aboard Marton! No disrespect to our current keepers, but I think the signing will definitely improve that position in our squad.

Well done to RK, SC & ME for completing the deal, and, more importantly, well done to Tamas Priskin for persuading his mate to drop down a division because we're a great club to play for...

Pleased, good price for gk at his peak(believe he is 27).Think we are lucky to get him at that price. When we had Asmir Begovic last autumn didnt lose a single game, and was sorry to see him go.See in paper Dion Dublin saying nice things about RK;but think he is a bit to old to be our new striker???!!!

So the transfer saga to compete with Homer's odyssey is complete. But one question, why have they put a picture of Bill Paxton up on the page?

Now for a striker, but not going to get one in before the weekend's deadline (is it close of play today or tomorrow for Sats game?) so we go with what we've got and we give it our best.

As someone traditionally always calls out when they announce the winner of the Nobel prize for literature in Stockholm: AT LAST!

Marlon Harewood would be a great addition at this level but not sure if he is a Keane 'type' player

Good signing cos Murphy is not good/big enough. We now need Chopra or a similar striker in and a winger like Sinclair would also have been good.

Did you all go to the same matches as me last season??

I'll admit fulop's a very good player and a happy addition to the squad providing his wage bill isn't too high.
However murphy was also very good last season and his kicking was only dodgy for a couple of matches so i don't see any discernible weaknesses in his game either.

Glad you're here marton but let's not go disparaging one of the few players that really held a good account of themselves in the latter half of last season.

wallingford, I like the two year deals to prevent getting stuck with the likes of Lee Martin on our wage bill.

Welcome Fulop. I know you will be great after watching you play for Man City.

Lets hope you don't put the U in FLOP.

saw fulop play for city last season and he pulled off some very good saves, and will be a welcome addition to the squad, especially if he can make priskin score some goals!
Sadly this almost guarentees that without a striker 0-0 draws will be a certainty throughout the season: Offer 5 or 6 mil for both chops and whittingham, funded by a possible walters exit, and we will be big contenders this season.

How is it a waste of money signing a top keeper its not like he is going to be the last signing and all the transfer budget is gone on him. Still 3 weeks in the transfer window

Good move to cheer us up at last but still need a CLASS striker to make the good defence worthwhile !

This massive clearout of the dead wood is long overdue...and notably many other clubs this summer have done similar. The greed within the game is coming home to roost, and IF Pompey go to the wall today , expect a cascade of other clubs who are unable to pay the IR, to go the same way.

ITFC like many other clubs are desperate to offload players on ridiculious wages....This Club is finally being run like a business - which whetehr we like it or not , is exactly what Football is all about these days !

Good signing at a good price. Nice work Keano.

Just noticed today that Darius Vassell and Jeremy Alialialialiadiere are both free agents without clubs. Anyone ??

Good signing and not to bad a price for an international keeper in my opinion.

Just seen that Keane has said in an interview that there will be no more signings before the boro game and no outgoings either, but that Walters has been in talks with Stoke and it is just a matter of agreeing terms so I fully expect that one to go through next week.
