Scotland Unbelievably Close to Ipswich? Friday, 6th Aug 2010 10:36
Wigan Athletic striker Jason Scotland is tipped to be the player boss Roy Keane said he was “unbelievably close” to signing yesterday. The 31-year-old former Swansea frontman appears likely to leave the DW Stadium during the close season as part of a clear-out by boss Roberto Martinez.
Rumours regarding the Trinidad and Tobago international appeared on the TWTD Message Board last night and have persisted this morning with claims of an initial loan deal to give the clubs time to settle the terms of a two-year permanent switch. The story has subsequently been picked up by national newspapers with a fee of £750,000 claimed, while there are reports elsewhere that the player is weighing up the switch.
Scotland started his career his career in his home country with San Juan Jabloteh and Defence Force, who Carlos Edwards was also with earlier in his career.
In 2003 he joined Dundee United after a trial, moving on to St Johnstone two years later and then Swansea City for a fee of £25,000 in 2007.
Scotland enjoyed a hugely successful spell with the Swans, netting 29 goals in all competitions during their 2007/08 League One promotion campaign and 24 in the Welsh side’s first year back in the Championship.
Last summer the 5ft 8in tall striker moved on to Wigan for £2 million but the switch hasn’t been a success, the Trinidadian netting only one league goal last season.
Nicknamed Rocket, Scotland has won 41 full international caps and has scored eight goals, playing alongside Town midfielder Carlos Edwards and former Blues loanee Stern John.
Yesterday, boss Roy Keane said he was very near to adding a striker to his squad and hinted that that player might not be Cardiff’s Michael Chopra, the man understood to be his number one target.
The Blues boss also said that he had a number of forward players in his thoughts: “There are two or three players I’ve got in mind in terms of attacking positions that we need. The deals we’re looking at would be permanent because we need some permanent players who we know will be at the club for two or three years to help bring it forward.”

This would be a GREAT signing... strong, fast, knows where the goal is... like it! I would prefer Scotland to Chopra to be honest.

just the type of powerful forward that we need -- would be an excellent addition and will score goals in this league....wickham and scotland would be up there with the best partnership in this league

Did not see this one coming if this is true! Good signing at Championship level, would have preferred someone a bit younger, but if this is as well as another signing them definitely sign him up!

If he can repeat his championship form of a few years ago then will be a welcome addition to the squad. Some may struggle to get too excited about this, especially as it's not Chopra, but he's more of a goalscorer than any of the strikers we currently have so good move I reckon.

Decent record in second tier football, but I'm not excited. Yet.

plus it's at least 4 1/2 hours on the train, so not that close really...

He is a great player at this level, he scored 45 goals in 90 games for Swansea, which is 23 a season if he plays every game. He would be a terrific signing. Get Chopra and Wittingham as well, though.

What's the deal with Nicky Butt? Anyone know? If Hyam is progressing through nicely, Butt would be a great foil for him this season. Scotland, OK, fair enough. I still want Chops though.

great championship goalscorer and with no end in sight to the chopra saga, would be a decent addition. could work well with wickham and priskin as back up

This could be a great signing if true - a very strong player who knows where the net is. So what if he didn't cut it in the Premiership - Robbie Earnshaw wasn't all that great in the Premiership but he scores for fun in this division.

I suspect that the Chopra deal has hit a brick wall... we have probably made our "best" offer and Cardiff say it's still not enough... so move on to other targets... Scotland gives you power and pace, plus an end product and at this level those 3 combined is king. Must be worth more than Chopra in the long run.

I would like to see Chopra and Scotland in if we are looking to let Pabs go plus Stead still on the transfer list and I really can see Priskin doing it. Plus Walters could be on his way Chopra Scotland and Wickham up front in a 4-3-3 which we have played most of Pre season

Sounds like a GCSE Geography question. The answer is no but you get extra marks for showing your workings. Ian Marshall was hardly was this sort of age when he joined & he did a great job for us. Scotland is a decent player with a good record. I'd prefer Scotland to an overpriced Chopra to be honest.

Reading between the lines of RK's comments of the last few days it looks like we are gonna sign Scotland and Chopra. Scotland on a loan deal incase it don't work out. He's not done well at Wigan, so is a bit of a risk. Chops and Wiks up top with Scotland just behind (a bit like the Eric Gates position) Sounds great to me. Thats about 16 million up front. Should bring a few goals. :-)

Scotland much better than Chopra and not a lose cannon.

I don't think there was anybody over-impressed at the signing of Jon Walters from Chester, a few years ago, but look how it turned out. I think Scotland would be a good signing at this level
