Clegg: Transfer Market Set to Spring into Life
Clegg: Transfer Market Set to Spring into Life
Monday, 9th Aug 2010 09:02

Chief executive Simon Clegg says the transfer market is likely to spring into life now that the season has started. Town are targeting two signings by the middle of this week, while Clegg confirmed that there is more than one club chasing Blues skipper Jon Walters.

Clegg told TWTD that while he understands supporters want new faces in as soon as possible, Town isn’t the only club where movement has been relatively slow this summer: “I know the fans want signings and want them as soon as the window opens. But it is incredibly quiet out there.

"I was at the Football League EGM in Derby last Wednesday and speaking with a number of my peers we were all talking about how quiet it is out there.”

The former British Olympic Committee boss says things are likely to get busier now that the season is under way: “There’s the odd deal happening, but we’re not seeing any major ripple down effect from the Premier League as yet and there is a feeling that there will be a greater movement — generally across the leagues - now that the season has kicked in.”

Clegg says that he’s working on a number of potential deals: “I’ve learned over the last 15 or 16 months that you can’t be overly confident about these things, they don’t happen until the ink is dry on the paperwork. Let’s just say that I’m continuing to work on a number of different fronts and hope that some of those efforts come to fruition.”

As well as players coming in, the Town chief executive is negotiating Jon Walters’s likely exit with Stoke understood to be the main contender for his signature: “We’ve had an offer for Jon which doesn’t match our valuation and there are a number of clubs out there who would be interested in signing him.”

Earlier in the summer, Town were reported to have turned down a £2.5 million offer for the ex-Chester City man.

He seems to say the most obvious things... and seems to do things for effect, to try and win favour.

Or... maybe he's doing it the right way - but it just doesn't suit me! Who knows! I'd certainly like a load of answers after the (what appears to be) shambolic pre-season!

However, haven't come home from a game buzzing like Sat since we beat scum at home season before last.. Happy Days

I am sure Clegg is devastated to learn that you lot don't like him....

I think he is still learning. He will come good. He is right though, until a deal is done and the player is holding the shirt, its not done.

FAns want to hear about transfers and who we are linked with but deals take time and as soon as something leaks onto the press it alerts other clubs i.e. the Scotland deal.

Lets just see what happens before you starting jumping on the clubs back. But then again you whingers need something to moan about after we won at the weekend.

I just look at his business track record at the British Olympic Association and the Lee Martin deal (£2m fee/£12k a week wage when there was no competition to sign the bloke) and feel that ME deserves him!

The Army never recruits the brightest but they sure follow orders well ...

Wickedblue, I'd imagine if enough supporters voiced there displeasure at his dealings he would start to lose sleep. Reading between the lines of another story RK is not that enamoured with his performance on completing deals either.

Simple fact is one more injury, to say Priskin against England, and we'll struggle to field a team that doesn't qualify for the u18s.

... or maybe some peoples expectations are a little naïve and ignorant. I'm sure we could all do his job better, couldnt we?

Why does the transfer market spring into life once the season has started? Surely the window should close before the season starts so that teams can just concentrate on playing football.

No doubt the window dates are set by the same pratts at UEFA / FIFA who thought that mid-August would be a good time for a meaningless international friendly!

I think Clegg knows business and just needs to continue adapting it to a football club.
I'd rather him be tight-lipped about transfers until they're seen through, as opposed to being a fool and embarrassing your club like Arthur has done at Forest, by saying Whittingham and Pratley "want to play for my club".

Hey Vexorg

why don't you say that to his face?

I believe he rose through the ranks to become a major, not an easy feat these days, if he was useless in the first place the olympic committee wouldn't have recruited him. Do you know the prestige in having worked on the olympic project represents on a CV?

Someone must advise him as to contracts as it seems he has not had any prior dealings with the footballing world. The finance director springs to mind.

well it seems to me that Simon Clegg and Marcus Evans' lack of football know how is potentially going to "cost" Town dear in terms of transfer dealings.

RK is quite obviously losing patientce now (as he rightfully has cause to complain and be concerned at the lack of incoming "targets").

If Chopra has always been the managers top target , being fobbed off by Cardiff with a poor second rated striker is simply not good enough , and Clegg should make every effort to secure Keane's targets

Mr Evans hows about you free up some wages by selling on Mr Clegg and letting Keane do the negotiations for the players he wants with the final say coming from you to ensure he doesnt 'overspend'?

So, rather than mess around - go and sign some players!
