Walters Stripped of Captaincy
Walters Stripped of Captaincy
Friday, 13th Aug 2010 21:27

Wantaway wideman Jon Walters is understood to have been stripped of the captaincy and dropped for Saturday’s first home game of the season against Burnley. Boss Roy Keane hinted that the midfielder or striker, who is interesting Stoke and another Premier League club, might not be his captain this weekend at Thursday’s press conference.

Keane hit out at Walters for asking for a move, adding that his status as captain was likely to be in jeopardy when asked if he remained in possession of the armband: “He is today, but football changes on a daily basis.”

Midfielder David Norris was praised by Keane for his performance as skipper at Exeter on Tuesday and will take the armband against the Clarets.

FinnishBlue, couldn't disagree with you more mate.

You can't have a captain who doesn't want to play for the team; younger players will go to the captain for advice and guidance, and if his heart isn't in the club then keeping him on in that role will be very destabilising.

Behind Keane 110% here on this decision. He's made a few that I haven't agreed with but think he's got this one spot on.

Am going to 2moros game, (Can't wait!) as others have said, Walters has only got himself to blame here, & yep, Keane has my full support in dropping him, you can't have a captain that doesnt want to play for the club. & as Hereord-Blue has said, I haven't agreed with everything Keane has done, but 1 thing is for sure, he is now getting a good solid, committed squad together, any 2 from chopra, Scotland & McCormack & I'd be more than happy. COYBs!

I hope he does leave as i dont think he has been performing well for the last 2 seasons. David Norris or Grant Leadbitter for the captaincy

McAurley would be the best Captain...unless Norris can stop his bookings...and realise his importance to the club...Leadbitter, a very good player, but far too impetuous and arguementitive to come into consideration. Walters did well, but was never a Captain or player that would even get into our better teams of the not too distant past.

Pity, he played really well at Boro last week.

i think either one of leadbitter or norris would make a good enough captain. On another note, I just hope that ipswich fans are patient with our team this year, it may sound pessimistic but a draw tomorrow wouldnt be a bad result. Big signings such as McCormack and Scotland are on the verge of joining but it doesnt mean instant success. We need to back keano and the boys all the way, to be honest, in my view we dont NEED promotion this year. We have so many young talents who are developing, and gradually with more signings the team will get stronger. At this rate, we'll be in the premiership in 2 years at the most, which is fine by me!

Heard West Brom are also interested with Luke Moore as part of the deal.
If JW wants to go, fine and good luck but there are better ways of doing it than the way he seems to have done. What Mr Walters should consider is that he was playing for a club that eventualy dropped out of the league and it was ITFC that made him the player he is, sorry was!

Also can't see him making the Stoke team that often with all the new signings and Lawrence staying !

What is it exactly that Walters has done wrong? He's asked Keane for a transfer, which according to most people (myself included) seems to suit everyone. Has Walters made any public statements? The only person talking about this seems to be Keane - and stories like this can do nothing to help sell him for a good price. I dare say more will come out about this in time...

Roosta, quite right, nothing wrong with asking for a transfer. However, faking a virus to miss a match and cancelling a public appearance because he didn't want to appear in a town shirt last week...... Not really great behaviour in my opinion.

@ramseyn - Good point, I'd forgotten about those 'revelations'!

Good decision by Keane, pity he hadn't done it last season. The real John Walters went missing two seasons ago, only brief flashes (QPR away Feb 2009) of his old self shown since then. Both Pablo and Walters think they can do what they like and Roy Keane has acted quickly by showing them the door and given the kids their chance. Much like England on Weds, soon as winging Rooney went off, the kids came on and turned the game.

Maybe I'm naive about players relationships on their clubs... But Walters definitely is a player who always gives 100% in every shirt.

My point was to criticize Keane on his rush comments and moves, which often causes some misunderstanding and harm among players and whole club.

3points today!

Norris will make an excellent captain.

None of us know what's going on behind the scenes, perhaps Walters said he didn't want to play in case he got injured. Of course a small majority won't consider that option and will blame Roy.

I also can't understand why some people keep going on about Pablo - yes I am a fan of his - but two goals last season is a very poor return rate. We haven't missed him so far!

FinnishBlue i have read previous posts about some anti keane fans moaning that we let players go for nothing or too cheap but i assume this has been because Keane wanted these players to leave and the anti keane brigade just jump on the "he is rubbish dont know what he is doing clap trap" Now we have a player i assume he did not want to get rid of but Walters wants to leave (happens in football) and rather than Stoke and Walters dictating to our Club, ITFC have put their foot down and said in not so many words "if you want him pay our price" ITFC have never been a greedy club and even my eyebrows have raised with the price of some that have left this club. 3 million to a premiership club for one of our arguably better players is reasonable and ITFC standing up for itself whether it is Keane or Clegg does not compare to Counago who is not wanted (cant see clubs trying to steal counago away).
Man management? have you been in the changing room and heard Keane? no i see last Saturday a united Ipswich demolish Middlesborough away and i think its time to support your club because with your kinda support Stoke will dictate to us and Walters will leave for 750k and Counago would get another payrise and maybe score 7 goals this season if he could be bothered to play 45 games.

Very disapointed with JW. No problem with him wanting to play in prem but think at best he will be warming the bench most of the time, but this is not the way to go about it. The EADT headline to day Hero to Zero sums it us for most fans.

I think you should all ask yourself a question - if this allienation of 'people' continues is there going to be anyone who wants to work for the club ? - players or otherwise.
Signs are there already for those who choose to be realistic ......... somewhat concerning in my opinion.

Man management ability - non existant. Team management ability - very questionable.
I wonder who this is ??

I think this is being blown out of all proportion. One of our players wants to play in the Premiership. Nothing wrong there. They probably all want to! An established Prem side are supposedly in for JW, who is in theory approaching the peak of his career and may not get another chance. Fine. JW's agent needs to persuade them to meet the valuation, which is reasonable for a good Championship player with 2 years on his contract. It's not a massive fee and if Stoke are serious, they should pay up (or offer a player or two in exchange, Michael Tonge or James Kitson anyone?)

JW has been a good servant to Ipswich over the past few years and I really hope that no one boos him this afternoon if he is involved...
