Final Chopra Bid?
Final Chopra Bid?
Sunday, 22nd Aug 2010 09:42

Town boss Roy Keane is set to make one final move for Cardiff frontman Michael Chopra, according to one of this morning’s tabloids. Keane is said to be ready to pay the Bluebirds £4 million for the player he has been chasing all summer.

Keane said on Friday that Cardiff, having added Craig Bellamy to their squad, may be willing to sell his former Sunderland striker but that as yet Town won’t pay the asking price: “If someone gives them their valuation, then Chopra might go, but Ipswich wouldn’t meet that valuation at the moment.”

Chopra started for Cardiff in their 4-0 home victory over Doncaster on Saturday but limped off with an injury after 32 minutes.

The Blues boss says that with Jon Stead likely to move to Bristol City this week he wants to sign two attacking players, one of whom is likely to be Wigan’s Jason Scotland, a midfielder and a defender.

i just cant see how chopr is worth 4 million and stead worth quarter of a million ?!!! surely john stead has come on this season. and by that mathematics it means chopra is worth 16 john steads ?!! hmm not to sure on that one, stead looks like he wil be finally able to live up to the hype that has surrounded him his whole footballing career.

4m is too much money for Chopra. We need a wideman as we are short in the position and maybe Scotland at 750k who is proven goalscorer at this level. With Wickham back Priskin, Stead and Scotland is a strike force good enough for promotion.

£4m... too much really, plus we don't need another injured player... The Scotland thing is going on too long. Action is required. Ironically, results wise we are doing okay. But additions are required. We are low on numbers and its a long hard season.

Chopra & Scotland - our expectations are now very, very high. Pressure will be on for them to perform from their first kick. If they sign.

I don't think it will actually be £4 million, press always exaggerate the fees. Sure when Keane said no one had reached the Walters valuation, the press said we were holding out for £4 mil, turned out to be a fair bit lower.

We are into the realms of panic buying ! Due to the lack of football nous in our senior management any deals now are going to be done in a rush and will turn out to be more expensive than they needed to be . If deals had been done earlier we would not be in a position to be held to ransom !!!! With the players RK has identified as wanted and not been signed and the players he has said could be used is it not time for ME & SC to back or sack ?

Is chubby Chopra really that good !

Personally I think we should wait to spend our cash and get a player on loan. We always rush to spend and don't always get the best deals.
The smaller squad and increased likelihod of playing seems to be galvanising the team at the moment and creating team spirit. We will need to strengthen, we need a decent striker... but a loan player could be as good as a bought one. We could actually get a better player than we can afford by getting a prem third choice striker looking for games and to raise their profile.
Chopra is good, but expensive and high maintenance.

I would love to see us sign Chopra but just cant see it happening, I think he would come to play for keane again without a doubt but i dont think a week will be long enough to complete this deal especially as he went off injured, and if we did do the deal it would be a bit of a gamble if he's not 100% fit. I think Scotland will arrive this week and I think he will do well, Strikers like Chopra and Scotland thrive on chances created for them, they are poachers so i think they would do the same job, I would actually be much happier if we got Scotland the cheaper option and stumped up the cash for Mccormack who is in my opinion more versatile, obviously younger and id imagine a cheaper option than Chopra. I also feel that RM and JS (im fed up of writing there names) would probably contribute more goals between them than MC alone so it would seem the better option in my opinion.

I'd like to see McCormack come in and one recognised striker, Scotland or Chopra or even both :-)

agree with lots here a poacher and a creater so McCormack and Scotland would do me and two for the price of one with spare cash for right back when you compare to the Chopra alleged price of 4 million. think we will miss Stead, not prolific goal scorer but have you noticed how often he tracks back to help the defence out? not sure these other players like Chopra would add this additional element. Still think he is worth at least half a million, we paid 750k for him and i think currently he is playing far better than when we paid that.

I agree with alot of you that 4m for Chopra is too much when Stead is only valued at 250k. But we are thinking of it wrong. Stead has been transfer-listed and Town have stated that we need to sell before we buy. Other clubs know this so have offered low fees. If he wasn't transfer listed then I rekcon we could get 1m.
Look at Walters. Keane has stated he is our best player and he didn't want Walters to go (untill the falling out) this is why other clubs offered big fees to capture him off of us.
Same with Chopra , Cardiff have stated that they don't want to sell him and therefore we will have to pay over the odds to capture him.

But 4m for Chopra would be very good. Us fans and the players would feel more confident that he can score. Unlike when Priskin plays. This would provide the team with a more relaxed feeling in the air.
Even having Scotland could have the same results.

If we could pull off a striker I cant see any reason why we can't at least be in the Play-offs.

Its all about how you look at it.

its annoying me that people are thinking we should blow all of the money from walters plus some extra money just on one player. yeah he's good but i think keane's learnt from his mistakes of splashing the cash out, i think scotland would still be good enough along with the rest of our team to make the play-offs atleast, plus that would leave over a million to buy two or three other players to add to our squad depth.

Blueknight85 added 18:01 - Aug 22
mhs we were offering £3mill for chops before we were selling walters so its a bit presumptions to assume we are blowing the walters money on one player and wont have anymore funds available...

I for one would love Chopra and Scotland. Think the latter is more probable, the Chopra thing has dragged on to long IMO. It's a worry tho, the window closes soon and all we have is roumor and spress speculation. TIME FOR ACTION!!!!

I think this could be a very interesting week for our club. Despite all the injuries and the fears of most supporters the team has got off to the best start in years. Whatever your thoughts may be on Keane, and it is obvious from some of the comments on here that there are those that will hate him no matter what, he has kept his side of the bargain and cleared out a lot of players. This week will in my opinion be a test of the real ambitions of both Clegg and Evans. If they really want to take this club to the next level then they have to either back the manager or sack him. Although some would be delighted to see a change of manager lets be honest do we really want yet more uphevel and another period of 'the squad gelling' again ?

Come on Clegg and Evans show us that your intentions really are to get this club back to the premiership. Most of us can see that these businessmen know the corporate side very well, you only have to look at the away shirt which has been turned into the Marcus Evans flag to see they are very media savvy but if you want success in this sport you have to also look longer term.

If Stead goes this week and nobody comes in I believe there is only two places to aportion blame. Time to step up to the plate guys.

Please remember, Stead does not want to play for us so why get hung up on comparisons?, get rid and get some fresh players in. I am not disputing Steads work ethic but.......he is a striker and needs to hit the net regulalry and this does not happen.

I know Chopra is a bit overpriced but we held Stoke to ransom with Walters so everyone plays the game, taking a star player from a promotion rival ain't a bad thing to do................

someone HAS to come in this week we are pretty desperate despite our good form!

With Scotland its obvious Wigan are closed for business. Plan B would be a good idea. Seems ITFC don't have a plan B. 9 days to the close of the transfer window and we are no nearer to determining the squad to see us through the winter. Or am I alone in thinking that the board feel that the current squad of players are supposed to do the job.

We won't all agree on the personnel assembled but let's see some sort of positivity to show the rest of the league that we are serious in our ambitions.

Look at Cardiff; They're going for it big time.

We should surely be able to match their ambition

Your're spot on. We're not close to getting the striker we want. let's wait until the loan market opens and get someone who can drive us forwards albeit temporarily. Once the EPL squads are finalised there will be loan options by the bagfull. Having drastically reduced the wage bill of late we should be able to take advantage of this.

umros he Stead DOES want to play for us he is pretty much being forced out, and for what - peanuts. No not massive scorer but does worry defenders (hence penalty sat) will score and tracks back well too. Ok not a star but certainly someone youd rather have in your team!

We are still desperate for a 25 goal a season striker. 4 million is a lot though.

bluelady added 20:16 - Aug 22
but is chopra a 25 a season? Scored 17 last year....... looking at his record its good but not 4 million good. Scotlands record at championship and league one level is actually more impressive!

i would love to see chopra come in but i still think that there will be more decent strikers becoming available when the prem teams have to start trimmimg down to the 25 man squad rule.
But even with out that i still think that we should be looking at other options as well so we don't leave it too late if the chopra deal doesn't come off, or even the scotland one at that.
But if we bring in a few more recruits to strengthen the team then i can see a top 6 finish
