Final Chopra Bid?
Final Chopra Bid?
Sunday, 22nd Aug 2010 09:42

Town boss Roy Keane is set to make one final move for Cardiff frontman Michael Chopra, according to one of this morning’s tabloids. Keane is said to be ready to pay the Bluebirds £4 million for the player he has been chasing all summer.

Keane said on Friday that Cardiff, having added Craig Bellamy to their squad, may be willing to sell his former Sunderland striker but that as yet Town won’t pay the asking price: “If someone gives them their valuation, then Chopra might go, but Ipswich wouldn’t meet that valuation at the moment.”

Chopra started for Cardiff in their 4-0 home victory over Doncaster on Saturday but limped off with an injury after 32 minutes.

The Blues boss says that with Jon Stead likely to move to Bristol City this week he wants to sign two attacking players, one of whom is likely to be Wigan’s Jason Scotland, a midfielder and a defender.

i think Cardiff have had a big investment and financially they are ok especially flexing their financial muscle to land Bellamy and i really do believe that Cardiff are serious about getting into the premiership because they know that their support base could potentially become very big let alone the extra income for promotion. So question is do they want to let Chopra go? and they are now in a very strong position so Ipswich are f.....d if they think they can get Chopra on the cheap. If we want Chopra then it looks like we will have to meet Cardiffs valuation and is he worth it? with the dithering in the transfer market ITFC has left itself with little option but to pay the bucks or go with out (which i think will be a bad mistake) we need more firepower and also cover in other positions. As i have said previously Keane has done a very good job in getting rid of many players bringing in some players and producing a hard to beat good side, but we need more players, more firepower to really match the likes of Cardiff and QPR (as i dont think the relegated sides are going to dominate this league) if we can get 2 good strikers and maybe 2 midfielders the playoffs would be very very realistic and Clegg and Evans have a very good chance to acheive financial heaven. So come on money men produce the goods or loose a very good opportunity.

Chopra was in Ipswich today [Sunday] having a medical. He isn't injured - just making his way to Portman Road. This comes from a horse's mouth. Wait for the news tomorrow....

£4m is a lot and more than I would want Town to spend on a player for a Championship campaign, unless they were clearly something special. Not sure Chopra fits into that bracket. For that sort of outlay I would normally expect us to sign 2 or 3 good quality players.

Give up on Chopra Keane. You can't afford any more costly flops so spread the risk!

Another poster has stated that we are into panic buying mode. Correct. Injuries & departures have seen to that, alongside our clubs consistent unwillingness to buy the right players at the right times. 8 days to go and counting - thought we were due some new faces before pre-season training? Many other clubs - including our rivals - got some of their key targets before pre-season training. Yes, there are fess, wages, etc, but isn't that how it works? Fortunately and ironically - our results have been superb. This may attract players. Folks coming in will be nailed on 1st team players - so will play, ie, Jason Scotland - they will get first team football. But lets see these guys, get them in, pay appropriate fees and wages - we have brought some serious money in and the wage bill has dropped significantly. There can be no other excuse than incompitance at this stage if we don't get bodies through the door.

Hi Denhamblue,
Why are you getting bored?? We're talking about the future of our club. You only have to watch the highlights of the Palace game to see that we are crying out for a striker. I did not agree with the Stead transfer one little bit. But here is where we are and Chopra would just relish the passes from our midfield. Priskin is a waste of space - he misses more goal chances than the laws of average would expect him to get. Get Chopra in and with a fit again Wickham - well. Premiership here we come. If you're bored denhamblue - why not go north to Carrow Road and see what boredom really is?

Lets face it chaps, none of us know what efforts are going on behind the scenes.... what a bunch of panic merchants we have on here, lets just be pleased that the club isnt run by such people!

....I am clearly alone in having faith in RK, SC and ME.

I also doubt that we would be paying £4m up front, it woul be c.£2-3m + perfomarmance based payments. Still alot of money however.

Also Cardiff are simply very fortunate that a top player is petulant and disgruntled at his current club, and MCFC are wealthy enough to let him move out on loan and still pick up most of his wages. This is not a transfer that we have the ability to compete with, CCFC are simplty benefitting from very very fortunate circumstances.

Keep the faith chaps, less of the pessimism, great result and a good performance yesterday.

Also.... what an atmosphere at Palace yesterday!!

If you go to Yahoo sport.com, just click on the game you want and you can see reports plus fans player ratings. I did this and found chopra again with a low rating and a fans comment as to why MaCormack was only an unused sub as he is BETTER than Chopra.

I suppose the moral of this story is never believe what you hear from a horse's mouth. Or a zebra's perhaps :-)) Looks like a good signing.

Chopra out for a "few weeks". That could - hopefully - be the end that transfer saga.
