Keane: Quiet Last Few Days of Transfer Window
Keane: Quiet Last Few Days of Transfer Window
Thursday, 26th Aug 2010 14:24

Town boss Roy Keane says he expects a very quiet final few days of the transfer window. The Blues manager is expecting no moves in or out before Tuesday’s deadline.

Keane said: “I think the next few days at the club will be very quiet. I wouldn’t expect any players coming in and I’d be very surprised, looking at my group of players and where we’re at, if anyone was to go out, unless anyone made a very good offer, which I suppose goes for every club.”

Despite this the Town manager says his squad is still short on numbers at present: “We need some more in, but it’s all well and good me, like every other manager, wishing we could do this and that, but it’s not possible at the moment.”

Keane says he will look to the loan market, although he says there can be pitfalls with short-term deals: “You’re in the hands of the Gods there, you’re waiting for clubs to get back to you and whether players want to come here. On some of the deals, like with the keeper we had last year, they can be called back, so that’s always a concern, but it’s never a bad option.”

The Blues have no new injuries ahead of Saturday’s game against Bristol City and none of the currently sidelined players are set to return.

Meanwhile chief executive Simon Clegg has paid tribute to fans after the Blues’ season ticket sales dropped by only 2,000 to 13,990 despite last year’s disappointments: “There could have been a much higher percentage turn against the club after we failed to deliver last season.

“We have to accept the season ticket figure we have and recognise in these chilling economic times that we did not give good value for money last season. It began badly and was clearly inconsistent thereafter.”

I haven't trundled through every comment but a few have made the comment 15 players out. Really? That many? Name them! Because if you start reeling off Ben Thatcher and Kevin Lisbie who may have played 1 game between them last season or Jack Colback who was never going to be here this season you are an accountant throwing up numbers to suit your theory and not dealing in facts.

Remove the loans we were never going to keep and the players not going to get a game at all and you're left with a handful of useful players that have left.

And Fulop, Kennedy, O'Dea, Hourihane, Townsend and Scotland. That's 6 in not 5. I acknowledge 2 a loans but they are more than likely to become permanent. There is also the additions to the match day squad of the likes of Hyam, Murray, Brown and Lambe.

Given the teams current table standing there is an argument, a very good one, albeit early in the season, that the player ins and outs have been successful, not that the diatribe in these comments would indicate that.

yes i agree about bellamy but man city are going to be an exception to the rule about available players after what they have bought this year.
gio will go abroad if not in the 25 and the rule about uk trained and under 21 players will mean most players available will be unreliable part season older players.
i will be watching the news next week for good news but fear nothing stunning will happen because of wages costs and not upsetting the players already at town and earning less than prem standard wages.
also not a season ticket holder as i live 15000 miles away but have served my apprenticeship in the 70/80's home and away and have the scars ( physical and mental) to show for it. (norwich train station, watford gap service station and millwall to name a few)

I'm dissapointed, I think we need another right back, central midfielder and strikerwideman. The team have started unbelievably well should get a few more faces in as it will be a very long season - 46 league games.

I would guess the cautious strategy is get some loans in and see what the situation is in January. Anyway, things could be much worse: we could have signed Bellamy!

We have to be somewhat realistic here, if ME asks for the books to be balanced then that is what is going to happen, he put quite a few quid into us last year and I am sure we are still using his cashflow to kepp things going at the moment especially with less than 20,000 turning up for the season opener at home.
Lets see what happens we have some good players and some good young prospects coming through so Keano will have to use what he has got...
I hate to think where we would be without ME lets not forget that.....

I wouldnt't have minded Bellamy!!!
I agree with what you say DidcotBlue about where would we be with out ME Money and i'm sure we as fans thank him for that.
But, does that mean from now on we are happy with just surviving in mid division of this league and not want to take any gambles on promotion incase it back fires?
look at the teams that come down, yes i know they get a pay out from the PL to survive but they still spend, I hate to say it but even Norwich have spent alot of Money because they don't want to just survive, they want to Build.
We've had years of being happy with a mid table position or playing in the play-offs and some of us thinking thats a good season but it's not.
were still in the same division, were still playing the same teams and were still saying the same things as we were saying 5 years ago. so yes, thank you Mr Evans you have helped stabelise our club BUT lets now take that risk and push our club to the hights of being one of those top two teams in this league and lets all be sitting at our computers next year looking forward to that trip up the motorway to play the Liverpools, Man Utd and Chelsea's of this world and be back where we belong......let's not look back at the end of the season and say, 'God we had a good start to the season. IF only we had splashed out on *****'

Come on Mr Evans, Believe we are a sleeping giant and that we are better than the CCC. if you don't take my word for it. Listen to the 20,000+ on Saturday cheering our boys on to success.......COYB

New signings don't guarantee success and can sometimes set the team back. We've had a number of them over the last few years and certainly more negative than positive.
So, transfer fans, let's keep with what we've got build rhythm, momentum and all those other words that managers like and strengthen when we really need to strengthen. Lets use the opportunity to balance the books for a while, all clubs will have to at some point.

Im not saying go out and buy everyone we want but surely to strengthen and to have back up in certain areas wouldn't be a bad thing or do you think we can keep relying on the youth to get us through games? don't get me wrong we have some great youngsters coming through but it's a bit harsh to play them week in week out and in this league experiance does count alot in some games.....

i think it says it all when we really havent even got a second stream to play in the league/carling cup as our squad is that small our first team is also our our reserve team..... dont think we need lots just one or two decent back ups - when we are not playing well who have we got to whip off the bench to make all the differance? how can we change the mix up when really we only have 11 decent players and the odd one who will do job for us? I see Cardiff have now got yet another Striker (what are they going to do with them all, cant see Chopra being too happy when he returns to fitness, maybe a january bid??)

The best way to get the crowds back is to reduce the prices! The club are worried about the long-term effect of reducing prices, but look at what the effect of NOT reducing them has led to: 2000 fewer season tickets sold. We used to be a Championship leader in numbers of season tickets sold, but now we're just average. Let's have more fans for a lower price per person. Even if the ticket sales income were the same, surely the club would sell more merchandise. ITFC have some great fans, but we are mugged by the corporate mind when it comes to tickets. Yes, I'm still one of the mugs who pay, but I understand that there is a signifiant percentage for whom this is a decisive factor in whether or not to go to the matches.

It's a bit dissapointing that we are not looking to strengthen in depth but we are doing really well at the moment and we are still awaiting players to come back from injury. Its all positive at the moment and keane and the players and staff and fans all deserve alot of credit we are doing exactly what we needed to do but a little bit better!!! COYB
