Fallon Signs on Loan
Fallon Signs on Loan
Thursday, 25th Nov 2010 12:44

Town have confirmed that striker Rory Fallon has signed on loan from Plymouth Argyle with a view to a permanent switch. The 28-year-old, a New Zealand team-mate of Blues defender Tommy Smith, with be at Portman Road until January 22nd.

The frontman will train with the squad on Friday and could make his Town debut when the Blues travel to Norwich for Sunday's East Anglian derby.

Argyle boss Peter Reid says the move could become a full-time switch: "I've decided to let Rory go out with a view to a permanent move when the transfer window kicks in in January.

"We'll be actively seeking a replacement but I was pleased with the way Rory Patterson has been playing and I've got Joe Mason as well.

"It's a great opportunity for the boy and I'm sure he'll thrive in the Championship environment."

Fallon started in youth football with North Shore United in his home country before joining Barnsley as a 17-year-old. The 6ft 3in tall frontman has subsequently played for Shrewsbury (loan), Swindon, Yeovil (loan) and Swansea before signing for the Pilgrims for £300,000 in January 2007.

The one-time England U16, U17, U18, U19 and U20 international target man - he reverted to playing for New Zealand in 2009 - has scored 19 goals in 84 starts and 57 sub appearances for Argyle.

For New Zealand he has scored three goals in 10 games and played in all three matches at the World Cup in South Africa, having netted the goal which secured qualification via a 1-0 play-off second leg victory over Bahrain.

cracko82- yes keane tatics have been found wanting most of the season, but if this bloke scores 5 goals and a few assists between now and January and gets us back to winning ways and playing well then thats all that matters, hes the big phyiscal presence that we lack up front, yes connor is a big bloke but hes not playing well enough at the moment and this will take some of the pressure off him that has been created by his good season last year and all the transfer talk about him joining 1 of the big clubs in the premiership. its not like we've spent alot of money on this, so its a gamble worth taking in my eyes.

Cambridgeblue ; If God did speak, I suppose at six feet three, he would be the first one to hear him!

Trumpton blue, I thought that I was the only one who could remember Gerry Creaney and how awful he was.Slightly better than Mark Fish.

Bluelady - I almost always disagree (in my head - I rarely post) with your posts. But credit where credit is due, and a good point today. If it doesn't work out, we don't sign him in Jan. Simple. At this point what does Ipswich have to lose?

All right we will give him a chance and best of luck to him. I am all for signing players from below the Championship as their are hungrier than Premier drop downs and their wages are far less. However, it has to be said that signing a League One striker who is 28 and had a goal ratio of 1-in-7 for his club is not inspiring. We sold Stead for £250K but his goal scoring record at Championship level was 1-in-3.5 for Ipswich and is 1-in-2.8 for Bristol City.

If Keane plays Fallon up front on his own to hold the ball up for our non-scoring midfield, at the exclusion of Priskin and Wickham, then the fans' protests will grow ever louder.

Mark agree with your last comment, id like to see him bringing the ball down to actually create chances for the other strikers, not at a lone (loan !!) striker!

Rather confused by this signing, especially if Keane wants to play 1 upfront. Putting Fallon in as that man instead of Priskin, Scotland or Wickham seems silly to me as his record is hardly impressive.
Uninspiring signings can sometimes work(Shefki)or sometimes not(Gerry Creaney) and Fallon may look like AlanLee but has the air of a Creaneyesqe loan spell.
However I saw him play on TV for Plymouth a couple of seasons ago and he was topnotch that day so as some earlier posts have said, it may turn out to be an absolute bargain.
I have a sneaky feeling he will score Sunday...welcome Rory

Im happy at this signing, big man, could head the ball, bring others into play and maybe we can finnaly be a threat from set pieces!!

Anyway, if it all goes wrong for him we just wont sign him permanantly :)

Hi Guys
Argyle fan in peace *releases white doves*. Please dont expect Fallon to the answer to your prayers (or his for that matter :)). We used him as a target man and sadly although he tried hard he just cant time his jumps and at times it feels like his head is a 50p piece. Most of all are delighted that he has gone to be honest as we always lumped up the ball to him with no winning of 2nd phase play, have to say that most of us on pasoti.co.uk (read the 12 page thread on him) are amazed you have come in for him, you lot must have upset RK in a big way! He is not the out muscle type of player either and if you play ball to feet you may get more joy from his play. No doubt in my mind that he will return to Argyle, you simply wont want him. As someone jokingly pointed out, its revenge for taking Mariner..! Wish you the best of luck, always struck me as a good club with great traditions so hope you at least make the play-offs but can say with some degree of confidence that Fallon will at least try and in a better midfield (how is Chuck doing?) he may have more chances, anyway his confidence will need a little work, he has been booed off every match this season so maybe the chance will get his head right.

Greedandproud, thanks for the warning! Plymouth have a place in my heart as i enjoy it down there so always make the away trip to Home Park, although what you said about Fallon aren't entirely positive im still willing to give him a go as, sometimes in games, we run out of ideas and i think he others something different to wickham and co.

By the way, Chuck is our captain and is a very important player for us, most of the fans love him, he's in talks to sign a new contract so were hoping it gets done!

Cheers, COYB

Is this some kind of sick joke? this is bordering on ridiculous! have we really sunk this low? my club is dying!

I'm a bit worried that the pre-match handshakes may turn into a bit of a shambles. After all, with all these loan players, will anyone actually recognise anyone else. If they do they certainly won't know where they are playing. Perhaps we could try the old 9 1 formation, with instructions that only the 1 can cross the half way line. Everyone else . give it the John Smiths ...."Have it!"

Given that when things weren't going well last season there was talk of players taking time to gel, why do we now have a side that is 50% loan signings?

Still, when they all go back in January, Shane O'Connor may get a kick. Then again, I won't hold my breath. While on a rant, was Jaime Peters dropped for not being able to hoof the ball far enough.

COYB......FORK!!

How come Forest sign Aaron Ramsey on loan, Swansea are apparently getting Daniel Sturridge on Loan, Leicester have signed some good players in the last few weeks like Curtis Davies and Kirkland, who have we got? Bloody Rory Fallon, what planet is Keane on?

cornishblu added 23:11 - Nov 25
For me this has tipped the balance....Keano has now got to go....Forest get Aaron Ramsey, swansea in for a Chelsea striker.....why cant we attract prem players not third rate League one players....I work with a load of Argyle fans and they cant beleive that we have taken him......and they are a team that attract less than 5k supporters because they play so badly......would have been more excited if Argyle had loaned Mariner to us......I've nearly lost the faith!!!

devontractorboy added 00:04 - Nov 26
Cornishblu keep the faith my friend, Keane knows exactly what he's doing.
We don't have a target striker for when we play 'hoofball' and Rory is a big lad, so he'll be fine up front on his own. Keane is a master tactician and we mere plebs do not have the knowledge to know better, we will play 4-1-4-1 against Norwich and lose 4-1, well as the three muskateers used to say 1 -4 all and all 4-1... see this football stuff is easy isn't it?

See you in Norwich Sunday, I'll buy you a pasty....do they have Ginsters in Norfolk?

Ok, enough! Really, just cant take much more of seeing the Club i love go down the preverbial plug-hole like this. Positive and believe right to the end but now: I propose Paul Mariner and Matt Holland as the next Team to take over, starting 1st January. Sorry Roy, ive been with you all the way and im not going to moan, i know youve given it your absolute best shot and for that i thank you, but i cant take anymore.

didnt we get a striker from plymouth a few years back ? i think he turned out alright

It's not going to help him settle in if half the fans are questioning the signing. It is worth giving the lad a few games before judging him. Hopefully he can do the business.
