Manager to Be Unveiled at 1pm
Manager to Be Unveiled at 1pm
Monday, 10th Jan 2011 08:29

Town have announced a 1pm press conference [delayed to 1.15pm] where Paul Jewell is set to be confirmed as the Blues' new boss.

The former Bradford, Sheffield Wednesday, Wigan and Derby manager has been the only candidate seriously in the frame since bookies stopped taking bets on him taking over from Roy Keane on Thursday, before the Irishman's exit had even been confirmed.

Jewell, 46, was born in Liverpool and began his playing career with the Reds but failed to make a senior appearance at Anfield before moving on to Wigan Athletic in 1984 for £15,000.

The 5ft 8in tall frontman spent four years at Springfield Park, scoring 47 goals in 145 starts and 26 sub appearances.

In 1988 he joined Bradford for £80,000 and was with the Bantams for a decade, netting 66 times in 253 starts and 55 games from the bench. In 1995 he had had a spell on loan at Grimsby where he scored once in three games.

Jewell’s coaching career began on the staff at Bradford while he was still a player and in January 1998 he was made caretaker-manager at Valley Parade, replacing Chris Kamara, having been the current Sky Sports man’s assistant.

After an impressive start, Jewell was given a permanent contract by chairman Geoffrey Richmond and in the 1998/99 season his Bradford side held off Town’s challenge to finish second in what’s now the Championship behind Sunderland to reach the top flight for the first time in 77 years.

Having been everyone’s favourites to go straight back down, the Bantams secured survival on the final day of the 1999/00 season by beating Liverpool 1-0 at Valley Parade, David Wetherall netting the vital goal.

Jewell resigned soon after — assistant Chris Hutchings taking over at the Bantams - to become manager of Sheffield Wednesday, who had been relegated along with Wimbledon and Watford. Jewell's record at Valley Parade was won 46, drew 26 and lost 45 in 117 games in charge.

The Liverpudlian was sacked after only eight months at Hillsborough with the club in financial strife which afflicted them for most of the decade and eventually saw them drop into Division Two (now League One) in 2003. Jewell's record in his 38 games with the Owls was won 12, drew five and lost 21.

In June 2001 Jewell was appointed as manager at Wigan, then in what's now League One, taking them into the Championship in 2002/03, his second season back with the Latics.

Wigan narrowly missed out on a play-off place in their first ever season in the second tier, but a year later Jewell beat the Blues to the Premier League for the second time, Wigan finishing ahead of fellow Scouser Joe Royle’s Town in third with Sunderland again the champions.

The Latics finished 10th in their first season in the Premier League with Jewell amongst the names linked with the vacant England manager’s job during the following summer.

The following season Wigan escaped relegation on goal difference on the last day of the season. A day later Jewell resigned after 127 wins, 74 draws and 90 defeats in 291 games in charge at the JJB Stadium.

Having been mentioned in connection with Leicester and the Republic of Ireland, as well as a possible return to Wigan, Jewell eventually became boss at Derby County in November 2007.

The Rams were already well on their way to their record low Premier League points total of 11 and Jewell was unable to stop the rot. Despite this and tabloid stories regarding his personal life Derby kept him in charge for what they hoped would be a promotion challenge during 2008/09.

But things went little better in the Championship and after a December 2008 1-0 defeat to the Blues at Pride Park, Jewell resigned with his side in 18th place. His record in his 58 games with the Rams was won 12, drew 15 and lost 31.

He has been out of football management since then, although he has become a regular on the media circuit.

Married to Ann-Marie with a son Sam, who has played golf for Yorkshire, Jewell, whose late father Billy was a trade unionist in Liverpool, has been living in Menston near Bradford.

Good Luck to whoever takes charge of us. But we must give them time as it is going to take time for them to get their team in and tactics.

To all you hate Jewell fans all i can say is no matter who is manager, whether he is a unknown manager or whatever, if you are true supports you will get behind the team, the manager and the owner and support our beloved club. If you cant do that then you are obviously not true fans. Whether we are in a relegation dogfight or soing for automatic promotion, Your club is like your wife and you stick by it good or bad.

Finally all you Marcus Evans haters, he saved our club from financial meltdown, is it wrong for him to want to spend his money how he sees fit? football is a business whether we like it or not. Deal with it!!!

Come on you Blues and support the manager!!!! No more Boos!!!

Well if it is Jewell why didn't the club make the announcement at fridays press conference.
When asked the question about the likelihood of Jewell replacing Keane, Clegg led us to believe that interviews were taking place over the weekend and that a number of persons were in the frame!
This obviously was not the case.
Why try and pull the wool over everyones eyes Clegg ?....Why ?

You know, when Jewell was at Wigan, he was talked about as being in line for the Liverpool job. I think the guy talks a lot of sense whenever I've heard him and I am definitely more optimistic that he can turn us around than i was when Keane was appointed. If it is him....

blueoff Jewell may have chosen to take time out, when he left Wigan he said he wanted a break from the game but then went to Derby. So you cannot say he has been out of the game cause no one wanted him, you have absolutely no proof of that. No he isnt a first choice but any true town fan will get behind whoever is in charge until such a time as they are proven to be totally wrong for the job i.e Keane.

BlueOff... If you are not going to renew your season ticket without seeing the remainder of the season under Jewell, you cannot consider yourself a true Ipswich Fan. Anyone is better than Roy Keane, he has set this club back years and wasted a considerable amount of money in the time he was at the club.

Who ever is put in charge the fans need to get behind the club and give 100% backing, as long as we start to play football again I will be satisfied. The Premiership is years away.

At last someone has reconized that Evans has put 60 million quid in to the club, where the hell would we be now without that money.

Could be Houghton from Newcastle as he has been out of a job for abit so time to get his contract sorted as i said earlier Keane was hinting and so was Clegg that there was going to be a change of manager, so those that say Evans has made deperate signing are so wrong, contract have to go through agents soliciters and take time.
This has been on the cards for weeks

thankyou elmswell.... thing is no new manager will win all the fans over. There will always be a reason not to like. Hughton/O Driscol too young, Hodgson too old, fred blogs wrong colour hair etc etc etc. You cannot please all of the people all of the time! we could do worse it could be Mcparlan!!!!

Jewell is the only manager, out of a cast of has-beens, that we could get. Unfortunately, his recent record is two years unemployment, tabloid sex tape scandal, and before that two unsuccessul years at Derby with a record to match Keane. Yes he did get promotion with Bradford and Wigan, but that was a long time ago. Jewel couldn' turn Derby around in two seasons and this club is in deep decline. This appointment will end in relegation and tears.

If ME and Clegg are so smart why did they let the Keane car crash go on for so long? If they realised Keane had to go, is Jewell the best they could come up with? Why go through the charade of 'interviews' when Jewell was already in place. With a team of below standard players and results to match it actually would have been worth having a real process of appllications and interviews. We might have come up with someone who isn't an unemployed, failed manger with an unemployed, failed assistant to pin our hopes to. ME front up or shove off.

I think out of the list of apparent manager in the running: PJ, RH, AC, all will be more than compitent at the level Town are at.

Ipswich is a building block for someone with a bit of knowledge, decent experience and ability to gel a team and play some football. Keane had none of the above in my opinion.

For all the Keane supporters out there, I hope now they can see what a mess and how far backwards the club has gone under his command (and don't think ME and Clegg and blameless in this, but I hope they are the kind of people who can lern from this and don't make the same mistakes).

Whoever we get, I hpe we don't get all the sh**e about being a Prem club in 2 seasons, we need some huge turn around to achieve this.

There is also the fact that even after promotion, we're a nothing club up there. Look at your Wigan's, Blackburns, Boltons who after many succesive years in the top flight don't have a lot to really shout about and are all mid table relegation fodder at best.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love ITFC to be in the Prem, but I think there are some serious issues to resolve first, like building a decent team of experiece and talented youth, not relying on loan players, getting the fans enjoying the club and having a team spirit again.

As I said at the start, I personally think all of the named managers can achieve this and none of them give me the gut feeling of disaster I had when we appointed RK!

Good luck to them!

p.s. I'm also looking forward to not reading negative comment ALL THE TIME on TWTD. PMA (positive mental attitude) required all round people.

If it is Jewell it shows how the top management at PR hold the supporters in such contempt with SC looking to have been economical with the truth regarding candidates being interviewed over the weekend ! This is yet another example of non-football men making football decisions that affect our club ! After the way the sackings of the last two managers have been handled I feel ashamed to admit to being an ITFC season ticket holder ! We used to be held up in football as a club which did not hire and fire in the instant results manner but no longer is this true ! The owner is entitled to handle his investment in any way he wishes but to drag our club down to the level of clubs like Burnley , Crystal Palace and Charlton etc shows a complete disregard for our club history and values ! I did not think RK was the right man for the job but I gave him my support as he was the manager of my team , I have the same feeling for PJ but rather more so and am finding ,with the SC sayings re Interviews , it rather more difficult to think in terms of support for him ! I will be in my seat for the rest of the season but SC / ME will have to do rather more to convince me to renew my season ticket this year ! I want the best for ITFC but feel at this time let down by ME / SC with the way they are running our club !

Why don't all the "I don't want Paul Jewell to be manager" fans wear white robes & set fire to him for heavens sake!
We're not a Prem side, we're a struggling Championship side, so support the new manager & don't be so bl**dy negative.
ps Bluoff, if you're not renewing your season ticket & you're in the North Stand (Sir Bobby) let me know as my mate would like one....ta!

As i have said if you read Keanes comments he let us know he was on his way, it was the same with Magilton, Magilton knew he was going as Keane was lined up and became manager the day after. Magilton would have been in charge till the end of the season but his mother was taken ill and they let him go early.
They have to sort out Keane's contact and the new manager contact too. (Who just might not be Jewell)

Shove off Evans!!!!! £60 MILLION he has put in to the club where would we be now as before he came here we were £32 million in debt helped by Burleys bad signings and Sheepshanks paying players like Counago 25k a week.

Dont get me wrong liked Burley and still feel he would have turn the club round if given time again

Still say we have no right to know anything until it is done out of respect to Keane and the new manager, make no mistake the club belongs to Evans he has brought it, we just support the club (well some do)

'Paul Jewell has seen off competition from Sean O'Driscoll, Alan Curbishley and Chris Hughton to land the vacant Ipswich manager's job.'

What questions and what answers could have resulted in Jewell being successful over these candidates? His one and only trump card is failure.

I Know something there is a lot of on this page today - HOT AIR

Too many people think they know what they are talking about, opinions are just that, but the fact is this club will never succed being nicey nicey little Ipswich Town, Football is a business, if you dont like the way the club is run then dont renew your ticket, if you dont care and love the club get behind them and stick with it through thick and thin!!

Why crave the Premier league, wasnt yesterday enough to put you off for life!!!!

TIME TO GET REAL - Town are years and years away from the Premier League, so if you crave it, then its time to find a new club.

One thing that is true is what I said all along, the players are the ones paid to do a job that when on the pitch the manager has limited control.

Yesterday said it all about our players, No Keane, a cup game at Chelsea and what do they do, fall to pieces!!! Great passion, great way to show you really wanted the game lads!!

I reckon there will be a good few thousand tickets unsold for the emirates now

One thing I am going to do is continue to support the club, no matter how the season unfolds, your either Ipswich til you die or nothing at all.........

katemoss what a happy life you must live, never come across anyone so negative about everything!! Chris Hughton did what keane did got a team promoted once, it doesnt mean he will do it again particularly such a poor team as we currently have. Curbishley has turned down lots of jobs, whose to say he actually wanted this one, also been out of the game longer than Jewell. O Driscoll, maybe he prefers to see his contract out where he is? All of this is speculation yet some people take it totally to heart. We have a new manager, whoever he is we need to back him.

Looking at the Managers' stats, Paul Jewell has about breakeven wins and losses over his career, Excellent Wigan, not too good for Derby and Sheffield W.
RK also about breakeven over a rather short career. (Wenger and Ferguson come in at an amazingly identical 3:1). Clearly he has been much appreciated in his locality. Let's hope he travels well and can learn the language!

O2BITFC added 10:36 - Jan 10
I will be pleased if PJ is our new manager, he did extremely well with Bradford and Wigan and seems to me he only ran away to Derby to try and avoid the scandal, why else would he move to a lesser club? It also seems to be a perfect scenario for him as he has joined during a transfer window and has 21 players out of contract at the end of the season so will be able to build his own squad without deadwood wages clogging up the finances come the new season

StavangerBlue added 10:40 - Jan 10
Not the right person or the answer to our problems but then again who is? Good luck, to Paul if he is the Manager to be, he's going to need all the luck in the world.

After the defeat at Chelsea and the big possibility that Arsenal will embarrass us at home on Wednesday (their fans will demand it) confidence could hit rock bottom and we could be in Division One before we know it.

I've never known a time more depressing or low as the current few months.
