Jewell: Wins The Priority Then Style
Jewell: Wins The Priority Then Style

Boss Paul Jewell says his Town side need to start winning games before looking to play football in the traditional 'Ipswich way'. The Blues have won only one of their last 10 league games.

Jewell, making reference to Cesc Fabregas’s rugby comments after Wednesday’s Carling Cup win against Arsenal, says that initially he is after victories before looking to instil Town’s traditional passing game in his team: “Fabregas doesn’t think we play the 'Ipswich way'! The most important thing is winning matches, I’ve got to be honest.

“We all want to play the game the right way, but you’ve got to earn that right. I think it’s a bit of a fallacy when fans say ‘I’d rather lose the game 4-3 and play the right way’. They wouldn’t.

“They would rather win the game and as you win more games you get more and more confident and your players think ‘Where’s that come from?’.

“It’ll take time. We know we’re three points off the relegation places. We’re in battle. We’ve got to battle first, make no mistake about it.

“And after the battle, you’ve heard it before, you’ve got to win a battle to win a match. When we get in the right areas, we want to get the ball wide, want to get crosses in, but that takes time.”

Jewell agrees with his predecessor Roy Keane that Town are currently making too many poor decisions: “I think in and around both boxes. You can tell we’re a little bit edgy at times, we’re a little bit edgy when we’re clearing the ball and you get a feeling of nervousness when there shouldn’t be any.

“That’s football, that happens. We’ve just got to get rid of that and be strong, mentally and physically and try and move on.”

Meanwhile, striker Kevin Lisbie is yet to hear from Jewell regarding him being recalled to Portman Road from loan club Millwall. Like Lee Martin, who was summoned from Charlton yesterday, Town have a 24-hour recall on Lisbie. Pablo Couñago’s spell at Crystal Palace can only be curtailed if the player, Palace and Town all agree to do so.

Lisbie said: “I haven’t heard anything at the moment, and I’m not exactly waiting by my phone.

“But if Ipswich were to call me back, then it would presumably be to go straight back into the team. If something happens, then it happens, and I would see out my final few months at Ipswich.

“I have nothing against the club, and I know that they could call me back at any time this month. There’s a new manager in place and there’s 12 days left for them to come in for me.”

I'm liking this guy more and more.

However, I find it interesting that he's basically saying the same as RK - eg: Poor decisions, needs results first, low confidence, etc, etc. Just that he says it in a different way!

Apologies for bringing RK into it, but I think it has to be recognised that what he was trying to do wasn't all bad - it was just the way he went about it half the time!

Nice one Jewell, spot on with the comments again! As for Lisbie, do not bring the waste of space that he is back, his comments say it all that he doesnt want to come back and he wont fight for the cause. He really has to be up there for one of our worst ever signings!

My brother and I didn't renew our season tickets last year after ten years because we were fed up with wasting our saturday afternoons watching clueless football. Let's be clear about this. It was the appalling quality of the team play - not the squad, not the results (which were not significantly worse than we'd been used to after the dreadful start) and not anyone's personality. Most supporters judge on what they see. And looking at the terraces this season I don't think we were the only ones not to like it.

Lisbie you are not welcome, as for i would walk straight back into the team I DONT THINK SO! Vic agreed but the trouble is the lack of confidence was most likely due to the previous management style, hopefully an arm around the shoulder, encouraging rather than threatening approach will work and the players will start to believe in themselves again.....

I was always taught football was about passing and movement. I've not seen that in RK rein, I was under the impression his master plan was to play keeper and 10 centre backs.

Under royle he knew he had team that would let in goals but he gave the squad belief that they could score more. It did help at the time we had 2 or 3 players who could score from dead ball situations.

Now pj needs to get in couple of players, skilful who can put foot on the ball and create scoring chances.

Wins will come, if the squad believe.

see today that Haynes is possibly off to Barsnley and also heard that Colchester may well be in for Lisbie again. Be good if we could sell him before his contract expires... Be good to see us linked with realistic targets, been very little noise from the new regime. Still maybe thats a good thing keane could sometmies be a bit too vocal about his targets letting everyone know! Be good to have at least one in by saturday :-)

Bluesman,
If you say that you can't be a loyal Ipswich Town Fan! If you want to watch attractive decent football, then go and get a season ticket at Arsenal, or (I hate to say it) Norwich! I'd rather get the wins to propel us up the table, than playing Attractive football and losing 1-0 to a team who can grind out a result (12/01/11 anyone?).
Like PJ said its all about confidence, I think under Keane the players were scared to play decent football incase they make a mistake and get an earful at halftme or full time! I think once we have a few wins under our belt get away from the relegation zone, the pressure decreases and im sure they'll start to play the decent Ipswich Town football that we saw in the past, and then all the 'loyal' armchair fans can come out and support the team :P

PJ has got hold of the wrong end of the stick. Town fans (like the bluesman bro's) want to at least see an attacking intent, just a little something to get excited about whilst trying to win. Far better to lose that way than losing simply by trying not to lose!

I think I will settle for just winning matches at the moment. However, we do need entertainment. Even in the Magilton days, we would leave the game complaining that it was boring. The entertaining games were few and far between - the 6-0 Bristol City win before the Marcus Evans era springs to mind, and the recent 3-0 against Leicester in the snow. I really do yearn for the gungho attacking football of the Joe Royle era

What a tw@t Kevin Lisbie is. Arrogant little so & so who obviously thinks he's something special. If we call you back to sit on the bench & be cover then so be it. Hope we bloody don't though!

jayITFC or maybe we need someone to clean the boots, he'd be part of the team then!! legoman you lost me!!! I think if we start to win games we will be playing better football by default, just maybe not as pretty as of old. I dont want to say anymore of the 10 man defence with the hope we can grab a goal and they dont score action, that doesnt and never will win games!

Er don't get me wrong I don't want Lisbie back here, but it's not arrogant for him to say he'll only be called back if he's gonna go straight into the team - it's stating the obvious! Why would we call him back for him to sit in the reserves while at the mo he's sitting in the shop window??!

Paul Jewel is peddling the same old twaddle Roy Keane was. So it's same old negative tactics, and dangling the possibilty of the never to arrive 'new signing' to strengthen the squad.

keane tried the ugly way and it didn't work' lets have another approach there are thousands of ways of doing a thing its just that the human mind is incapable of mastering more than a couple at any one time. in keanes case more than one at any one time..drop acid not bombs

I'd back up what Bluesman said, if I'm going to pay to watch a game of football it's got to be intertaining. And it just hasn't been. As for suggesting we go watch another team if we want to be entertained.... that's just backward.

My hazy memory recalls a season some time ago where we were top scorers in the division, Mathie and Marshall wreaking havoc. We were also the top conceding team that year, but I'd take that any day over carving out draws and narrow victories.

I didn't choose this team, it chose me, but I'm bored of the football we've been playing. Realistically, though, in a relegation fight it's hardly the time for showboating so here's hoping they get stuck in from now on. But goals still win games.

There is a bit of truth in both comments, people expect results but I would also expect a degree of entertainment for my cash, there has been very little entertainment in the past 3 seasons or so, however I fear without some new blood we will not see either improved results or decent football, sadly it appears there is little money as other teams are managing to sign players but there is just a deathly silence from PR, suspect Jewell's hands are tied also.

i think Jewel is recalling people because he is new, and like them or not he wants to meet the players, and perhaps jJudge them for himself, seems a plausable thing to do,then he knows first hand who he wants around and who he wants moved on .No problem .His comment on wins before style is right,i think once the wins come the confidence will bring style,P J will sort it .

We are 3 points away from the relegation zone and going down on current form, so of course results are the priority. The difference between Jewell and the previous management is that he talks about wanting to win games in the right way once things on the pitch are sorted out. Jewell's side in the past have been good to watch and I am sure Ipswich will become like that too, but it will take a bit of time and I guess he is trying to manage expectations.

Lisbie has to be one of our worst signings ever, but I think Magilton signed him as a bit of a last resort knowing we needed a striker but failing to land the likes of Nugent and Ameobi (the latter of whom failed a medical at Portman Road I seemed to understand, but now he is playing in the Premier League). At least Lisbie's transfer fee was well under £1M unlike many recent signings.

theres rumours going around that lisbie will be recalled and then sold to colchester for 200,00 {I must stated it is only a rumour so don't slat me if i am wrong, but that would do me}
