Jewell: 25-Goal Striker Unlikely This Season
Jewell: 25-Goal Striker Unlikely This Season
Tuesday, 1st Mar 2011 08:57

Town manager Paul Jewell says he’s unlikely to sign the 25-goal-a-season striker he’s after before the end of the season. The Blues boss has said he’s looking to add to his strike force having been unhappy with his side’s recent profligacy in front of goal.

Jewell said: “I think it’s difficult to try and bring someone who has got 25 goals outside the window. If he’s scoring like that he’s not normally going to be loaned."

The Blues boss is at pains to point out that he's not just blaming his frontmen for his side's lack of a cutting edge: “I don’t want this to be an anti-striker thing because it isn’t.

"In the [first two of the] three games this week we’ve dominated possession without creating too many opportunities. On Saturday we created brilliant opportunities but didn’t take them.

“I don’t want it to be a stick to beat the strikers with because I’m saying to everyone else that if we don’t take our chances we should get a 0-0, because that’s what gets teams promoted. That’s what makes successful teams.

“When things don’t go their way or you play really well and don’t take your chances, you’ve got to make sure you don’t concede at the back. It’s an overall thing that we want the whole group to be aware that you have to be mentally tough.

“If you miss chances, don’t be frightened to miss the next one, but if we do miss chances, don’t let the opposition get cheap goals and I feel the goals we conceded against Portsmouth were cheap.”

Jewell again warned against expecting too much from Connor Wickham too soon: “You have to be careful with Connor, because he’s only scored a handful of league goals.

“He’s got a lot to learn, which is why I keep telling you guys to cool your jets on that one. In a year’s time he would probably have had a hat-trick in a game like Saturday’s.”

Elsewhere, former Town loanee Stern John is on trial at MLS side Chivas USA.

This is nothing new, we have not had a good goalscorer since Darren Bent.

Play Priskin constantly.

He'll get you those goals.

He will.

Really.

can we increase the goal size at postman ? or perhaps tell the strikers that they have to send it just wide every shot to keep their jobs.or maybe give them a glass of rum before the game to steady the nerves

To bring a loan striker in now would be a waste of money as we are not fighting promotion or relegation, save the £20k a week and put it towards a decent striker in the summer.

Kevin Philips would do a good job!

I agree with BLUEBEAT. If we can't sign a striker now use Priskin more. He can't do any worse than our other strikers

Put young Tommy Smith in there alongside Wickham for the rest of the season

can't help but ponder how different this season would have been had we stumped up the extra 1/2 million for chopra, BFP is saying the same thing that Roy was saying before the run of bad results completely undermined the player's confidence, not taking our chances and letting in soft goals. Would Chopra have bagged 2 or 3 goals in that first half, cos even under Roy there were games we lost or drew when we should have buried those teams by half time. And is the fragile confidence of PR going to drain away again leaving us in the same situation as it did in Roy's last days, will the supporters be calling for BFP's head because of his tactical incompetence? Not at the moment cos we are playing some attractive football, but if the confidence goes, if the crowd start getting on your back, that will soon disappear along with the results. Just wondering......

Chops has been out injured for alot of the season. He could go for a lesser fee than the €5mil quoted at the start of the season. I dont think he would have made much of a difference to Keanes side. He would have been far too small for the balloon football key played.

Jim was close to signing Nicky Maynard a few years ago from Crewe. I would love to see him playinging Blue at PR. He could just be the man we need! Would cost €3-5mil.

Kevin Philips would do a good job in Sleeping Beauty, not as a footballer anymore.

Bluelady..sadly Kevin Phillips like Michael Owen seems happy enough warming his backside on the bench week in week out (and picking up a load of cash in the process)...I know what i'd rather be doing if I was in their boots (playing).

Blimey Dr. Jeckyll, you're very much a glass half empty sort of person. When does Mr. Hyde appear?

Do all Town fans live in a time warp, bring back Counago and Lisbie, yeah right because they scored loads in the past did'nt they, forget all the has beens and never were, we need a class midfielder and at least 2 decent strikers, none of those we have are good enough, trouble is who will want them, I still think Ambrose would do a good job, either Nugent or Sharp, 5M would get them, trouble is we have about 5 bob to spend, and very little real ambition.

"BFP is saying the same thing that Roy was saying before the run of bad results completely undermined the player's confidence, not taking our chances and letting in soft goals."

The poor run came as a result of the previous tw@t of a manager (term used very very very loosely) undermining every bit of confidence the players had, if the run itself was responsible for diminishing confidence then then a change of manager would have made no difference, players are now performing under the guidance of someone who can actually manage!
