Jewell's Half-Time Blast Does The Trick
Jewell's Half-Time Blast Does The Trick
Saturday, 5th Mar 2011 20:22

Town boss Paul Jewell says the first half-time rollocking of his time in charge of the Blues inspired his team to their 2-0 victory at Cardiff. The Blues vastly improved after the break to secure a second successive double over the promotion-hunting Bluebirds.

Jewell said: “I’m delighted with the result and certainly the second half. I wasn’t very happy with the first half, I couldn’t wait to get them in at half-time and change a few things, say a few home truths and in the second half we were a lot better.

“It was the first time I’ve lost my temper with them but I felt it was necessary and I think we got the response. Our goalie was terrific, he kept us in the game.”

The Blues boss says his side were much better during their recent defeats than they had been during the first half: “It’s ironic this game because that’s the worst we’ve played in four games for 45 minutes and yet it’s the best result we’ve had in four games. It does even itself out.

“The second half was terrific, I thought we got stronger as the game went on. I thought we nullified them, they were passing it around us in the first half and we weren’t getting close to them. We changed it around in the second half and we got close to them.

“It’s a tough place to come, I’m delighted with the second half performance, disappointed with the first, but at least we’ve responded.”

Jewell revealed that defender Mark Kennedy has a hamstring injury and is set for a spell on the sidelines. The Blues boss says the former Cardiff man will be missed, although he was pleased with his replacement: “He’s been outstanding for us, but in fairness to Darren O’Dea, I thought he was excellent.

“We’ve overcome a bit of adversity as well but we’re delighted with the three points and we move on to Tuesday now.”

Cardiff assistant boss Terry Burton took the post-match press conference with manager Dave Jones at a function and was understandably downbeat: “We’re gutted, we’re disappointed, we don’t like to lose, it hasn’t happened that often and we’re always disappointed when it does.

“But you’ve got to look at the performance and the performance warranted more than losing 2-0. You will have got an impression about the game and no one can tell me that the opposition have come here and deserved to get a 2-0 win.”

Burton felt Dekel Keinan’s first half goal, which was disallowed for offside, should have stood: “It was a legitimate goal, that puts us 1-0 up, we’re dominating the game, we’ve peppered their goal and they’ve hardly been in our half of the pitch.

“We dominated the game but we got beaten 2-0, that happens in football sometimes.”

What a great Goalkeeper Fulop is, I could not believe the people on this site the other week, who were suggesting he should go in the Summer, I have watched him with admiration ever since he arrived at Ipswich and apart from the occasional mistake or misjudgement, I have believed him to be superb, both with his generally safe hands and his positional skills, long may he remain with us in my opinion.

Jimmy Bullard ,walks on water ,Jimmy Bullard, walks on water! we spanked the boy'os like we oughter. Bellamy managed to keep his trap shut most of the game, but made me laugh when he had a few ''words '' with Wickham, wasnt seeing eye to eye at all, it was eye to navel .

Jewell was right to read the riot act. Thought we were awful first half.Very dull performance. BUT we did much better in the second and overall, this is a great win for us. Very well done lads!

I really dont know waht Martus's beef with Fulop is but its both churlish and nitpicking to criticise in any way the wonderful display he put in last might. Martus - go grow a pair!

So nice knowing that if we're not playing that great in the first half we've got a manager & coaching staff capable of geeing the players up at half time rather than accepting more of the same drivel in the 2nd half (ala keane).

*Note to ME/Clegg..we MUST sign Jimmy Bullard permanently..the guy ran the show yesterday..so come may,no dithering please, get your fingers out for a change & put a realistic offer on Hull's table, otherwise we'll miss out yet again.

Plus on a slightly negative note - we do need a decent right back..Edwards is not the answer, the amount of times he gives the ball away is embarrassing.

Well done boys; fantastic result. The principal difference between the Pompey and Cardiff games in terms of "dominating, then losing" was that WE missed chances against Pompey as opposed to their keeper having a blinder whilst Fulop was outstanding yesterday and that's what he's there for. So regardless of what Terry Burton thinks, we worked hard and fully merited the win. The second half performance was excellent and Bullard's first was fit to win any game. COYB!

For a team in 16th position in the league to go to Cardiff and get something is to be applauded. It was an immense result and we should be singing from now until Tuesday. The manner of the result was not important. We suffered last week against Portsmouth. What goes round etc.

I for one don't agree with tje negative comment about Scotland. He was isolated first half but in the second constantly worried their centre backs and his overall influence was significant. I agree with the comments about Fulop - yesterday was one of those days when he wasn't going to be beaten - but despite his physical presence he does flap a bit at crosses - if you analyse his season you can see it's a weakness but what he does do well is anticipate whats coming which he demonstrated many times yesterday. His kicking has improved too and you could see that the defence have confidence in him. Bullard has been a revelation, Martin is a different player (although he was always a chaser and tackler) my only concerns are Norris (and I am a fan) who looks way off the pace in a high tempo game and Leadbitter seems to have gone backwards since Keane departed. 10 out of 10 though for the second half yesterday - we could have been buried by half time but the response to Jewell at half time shows great character and hope for the future!

bluewarrior i actually am not sure Norris is fully fit after his recent knock, think he has been more off the pace recently? Thing is he always has been quick at recovery but the means often he can be thrown in too soon. Leadbitter not sure he has got worse, just think Bullard highlights his lack of true quality!!! Martin is no longer the waste of money on the pitch its Leadbitter. As for fullop and the various comments, watching match of the day there were some totally shocking decisions made my goalkeepers, so think at whatever level they will always make mistakes, if he can sort the flapping then he truely is a top quality keeper......

To be fair, to all this "flapping" stuff everyone is talking about. All I remember yesterday was Fulop clearing the ball out of our area. If he is more comfortable in some situations punching rather than catching then fair enough? Its not as if he never catches it, and I'm sure you'd all rather him punch it clear than try and catch it and drop it, then you'd moan!!

Garv thankless task a goalie striker misses four then scores a hero keeper makes four good saves then let's one in a villan!! Fullop is full of Passion for the game and think he is a good team player

obvioulsy Cardiff need to buy a 20 goal a season player - what they already have 3?

After saying that I would have been happy with a draw from Saturday, I'm speechless [ an ajective not normally associated with me ]. I was totally wrong and more than pleased to be. Oh ye of little faith in the first half, but a revolation [ or was it the old fashioned boll---ing ] in the second. To keep their fire-power out and win two - nil, surely that has to count for more than who did what and why ! At the end of the day, they did it. Once again, thanks to all concerned, three more points toward utter safety !
