Win New Roy Keane Book
Win New Roy Keane Book
Wednesday, 30th Mar 2011 16:40

One lucky TWTD reader will win a copy of Ian Oxborrow’s new book Eggshells: Roy Keane at Ipswich Town 2009-2011 which has just been published by Desert Island Football Histories. The book covers the Irishman’s 20 turbulent months in charge of the Blues.

To win, answer the following question correctly, send it to us here before Sunday 10th April and be fortunate enough to have your email picked at random. Who scored the goals in Roy Keane’s first match in charge of Town at Cardiff City?

If you can’t wait for your copy or never win competitions, you can buy the book via TWTD here.

Ian Oxborrow is a sports journalist with the Daily Telegraph and previously with the Colchester Gazette who has been watching Town for more than 20 years.

Kangerooblue. There's always one isn't there? Calling us all morons when all we're doing is stating facts. I'm gonna buy the book cos I love all things to do with Town but RK was by far the worse man to manage our great club and was dragging us into League 2. I was desperate for Roy to succeed. It's nothing personal with the bloke but he had to go.

sudburyblue, spot on, I can't believe some so easily forget just how desperate our situation was before PJ took over.

Is Roy Keane taking the pisz and wants to remind Town fans how many years he has put this club back. I for one will not be putting more money into the fat cats pocket, many on this board have very short memories. Wow we reached a cup semi final but remember we were also very close to being relegated until PJ took over.

Elmswell blue do you read? Roy Keane has nothing to do with the book so will be making not one penny out of it!!!!

Good points? It was a masterclass in wrecking a football club in just 18 months despite being given a relative fortune to spend. Make no mistake, there's every chance we would have been relegated without a change of manager.

Particular Keane 'highlights':

- selling Rhodes (the most natural poacher we have produced in years, since scoring 40 plus goals in League One in two seasons) for £600k before he'd even made a league start while blowing £1.7 million on Priskin (half a dozen goals in two seasons)

- blowing another £1.7 milllion on Lee Martin, then loaning him out to Charlton

- ignoring all emerging talent in the lower divisions while overpaying for anyone Irish/ex-Sunderland

- exiling experienced model pros like David Wright, Delaney, Stead in Siberia outside the squad and then chucking them straight back in the starting XI with little or no apparent rhyme or reason

- overpromoting far too many kids/novices like Trotter, Eastman, Murray, Hyam, Troy Brown into the team, often at the same time

- playing an entire back four of centre backs

- making Civelli train with the stiffs when he says he was fit since August

I could go on. Great player, utterly appalling manager (even worse than Bryan Robson) whose endless, unprecedented losing streak was reversed almost immediately by Jewell.

Jas I think Jim and Joe would be truly offended to be used in the same sentence as Roy Keane, not cool I'm afraid.

Call me a moron.

The book is yours Jas0999 - maybe you could ask him to sign it for you, and add it to your Roy Keane shrine that I believe you have.

If the standard is anything like the autobiography then I suggest the printer send the boxes straight to Banardo's

Yes, League Cup Semi Finalists is about the only good point. And this came courtesy of wins over Exeter (aet),Crewe (aet),Millwall, Northampton and WBA reserves. Not much of a high point, is it ?

We all know that jas0999 supported Keane. And fair enough for wanting to be loyal and give a manager time. Though I'm surprised that he finds anything to defend in his truly terrible reign at our club.

However, to bring comparisions to Joe Royle is shockingly unfair. Royle took over a team struggling, was given no money and then told to sell because we went into administration. His first half-season he managed 7th, then 5th, despite again having little money and then 3rd a season where we nearly got automatic promotion with a team that on paper looked mid-table at best. He then had to sell players worth 55 goals the previous season and he struggled to replace them with the 40p he was given to spend. Funny that.

So yes jas, I can see lots of comparisons with a manager who was given comparatively loads to spend, who took over a team comfortably capable of the upper mid-table and spent the next 20 months trying to drive any flair, skill, excitement and talent out of them.

It was truly glorious and it's a real shame he's gone.

I really believed Keane would be good for us but it really was a car crash unfortunately.

Even an Eggshell can finish mid-table!

Dreadful man.

Thank God he's long gone.

Never judge a book by the cover, or indeed the subject matter. I'm no great fan of Stalin but found his biography (by Robert Service) fascinating.

I think I'll give it a read before proffering any criticism.
