Jewell: Embarrassing Scoreline
Jewell: Embarrassing Scoreline
Thursday, 21st Apr 2011 22:56

Town boss Paul Jewell said he was hugely disappointed after what he described as his side’s “embarrassing” 5-1 home defeat to Norwich in the East Anglian derby at Portman Road.

Jewell said: “I’m hugely disappointed, it’s a local derby, it’s a full house and you want to try and put on a decent show for your supporters but unfortunately it’s an embarrassing scoreline really, there’s no doubt about it.

“I think possession-wise we probably had more than them, we probably had more attempts on goal than them, but they’re clinical in the box.

“Their strikers are good players and they gave us a hard time. It’s obvious that in both boxes they were exceptional and we were average to say the least.”

The Blues boss says his team’s lack of a predatory frontman was again all too evident: “It hasn’t just been notable tonight, I’ve been talking about it for some while.

“We’ve got the fourth best away record in the league and the 18th worst at home someone’s just told me.

“For some reason we just keep getting done on the counter-attack at home. Teams get behind the ball and hit us on the break and we can’t deal with it. It’s one of the areas we need to improve for next year.

“It’s not a one-off tonight. We let in three against Watford, Middlesbrough and Reading, so I know where we need to improve.

“There are a lot of good things that have happened since I’ve been here. Tonight wasn’t an eye opener for me, it’s a huge disappointment, but I know where we need to get better.”

Despite having a lot of the ball, Jewell felt his team made too few chances: “That’s typical of us at home. We don’t create a huge amount for the possession we have.

“Norwich broke and were incisive, were quick, they passed the ball, the two strikers hold the ball up and they’ve got a threat in behind.

“We haven’t got that at the moment. We need somebody we know is going to get us a goal but having said that we don’t create an awful lot.”

The Town manager was disappointed that even when the Blues managed to get something resembling a foothold in the game, they conceded another goal almost immediately: “We got back in it at 3-1 with a worldy from Jimmy and we’re thinking it’s going to be a rousing 10 minutes, then within two minutes from our corner — yet again and how many times have we said that this season? — the game’s over.”

Norwich boss Paul Lambert dismissed suggestions that it had been easy for his side: “There’s no game I’ve ever been involved in in my life that’s been easy. I think every game is hard and you have to earn the right to win football matches.

“I thought my team right from the off were extraordinary in the football that they played. It was incredible right from the off.

“We were up against a team which has been on fire lately and with a crowd as vibrant as anywhere we’ve been, so to come here and do what we’ve done was a big, big test of character and I thought the performance was excellent.”

no surprise ,its not a case of told you so,but i had said last week, fact is we arent that good and Norwich ,scum ,whatever you want to call them are now a good team and we would get thumped.Im as blue as the bluest Tractor boy but we have to face up to facts, predicting a home win was a vote with heart not head. What the result shows is the huge difference between teams that are promoted directly and the also rans.Nobody can deny Norwich have been very consistant and strong for past two seasons, if we are to succeed we will need to be same,.Next season starts TODAY . Hurting massively from last night, being a norwich based Ipswich fan is never great when we get beat but when we get trounced there is nothing worse. Bullard turned up and kept trying fair play to him he scored a cracking goal. But for the rest im just so disappointed with our performance, but on the positive side PJ has made us safe and he has time to think and rebuild in the summer. Norwich are a good side, they counter attack really well and they took their chances. Lets not be too downbeat as it can only get better from last night. Trust me im gonna get horrendous stick for months on end but im still positive PJ will turn us into a force next season. COYB

Last night was the lowest I have ever felt supporting town. The majority of are players need to take a good look at themselves after last nights performance it was not acceptable. Massive work in the summer for PJ Who I feel sorry for he has had done very well in getting us safe, sorting out contracts and playing decent football at times. We need to spend around 6-7 million in the summer in my OP. I have the faith in PJ and his team but I don't have any faith in SC.

Norwich took there chance when they came, though 2 of there scorers, Jackson and Surman were both heavily linked with Ipswich b4 signing 4 Norwich. As for some of the home fans.. where i sit there are 2 guys in my row who dont have a clue all they do are criticize the players, last night i lost it as the guy was ripping into Bullard saying"get it forward dont pass it sideways"..lumping it forward does not work ask Roy Keane.. Jimmy then ripped the net out with his shot so the complete prat in the Lower Britannia shut up for the rest of the night, We all should take a long look at ourselves its ok to express our opinions but back the players dont start having a go after 5 mins...Norwich should the way out of the division this year Jewell will take us up, we are not that far away...

listened to the game, the scoreline obviously flattered norwich..but hey, good luck to them,Lambert's done a brilliant job there and I for one applaud him.

We obviously need a few new players in the summer - especially a striker & I have every confidence in Paul Jewell to get us up there into the play-offs in the next season or so.

Let's not get too down hearted over last night..PJ has turned this club around in just a few short months & the dark dark days of Keane are long forgotten...i'm simply glad to be supporting Ipswich Town again rather than "roy keane's ipswich".

Bring on 2011/12.

embarrising is not the word to describe the performance yesterday, bullard ran our midfield on his own hopefully we can sign him this summer and why play one striker at home to your local rivals even if you do it should be wickham he is a STRIKER NOT A LEFT MIDFIELDER and we had no fight to get to the second ball.

Reading lots of posts on here, a lot of blame has been handed out to individuals and although nearly all of the team should hang their heads in shame, the problem lies with PJ.
We have many technically gifted players but where we lack is the tempo. Its great getting the ball the middle of midfield but then we hang onto to it long. By the time they've 4 touches on the ball and had a look round the only option is to go backwards. The tempo needs to be loads quicker. Watching the subs at half time, you had 6 Norwich guys in a small circle playing one touch keep ball with a player trying to intercept the ball. Its all quick, quick, quick.....what did we do ? We had Civelli and Peters etc. trying to see how many times they can keep the ball up in the air and on the back of their necks. Up the tempo and you'll see a lot better Town outfit !!!

i said last week Norwich play a faster game than us,their style and commitment showed just how far we are from being a good team.I still think PJ is capable of getting things going, but it will take a big shake up, and that cant wait till August,it has to start now .

that 9 -2 will stay on the record books for probably 50 years, shame on the players and the management for making true fans suffer like that
