Jewell: Embarrassing Scoreline
Jewell: Embarrassing Scoreline
Thursday, 21st Apr 2011 22:56

Town boss Paul Jewell said he was hugely disappointed after what he described as his side’s “embarrassing” 5-1 home defeat to Norwich in the East Anglian derby at Portman Road.

Jewell said: “I’m hugely disappointed, it’s a local derby, it’s a full house and you want to try and put on a decent show for your supporters but unfortunately it’s an embarrassing scoreline really, there’s no doubt about it.

“I think possession-wise we probably had more than them, we probably had more attempts on goal than them, but they’re clinical in the box.

“Their strikers are good players and they gave us a hard time. It’s obvious that in both boxes they were exceptional and we were average to say the least.”

The Blues boss says his team’s lack of a predatory frontman was again all too evident: “It hasn’t just been notable tonight, I’ve been talking about it for some while.

“We’ve got the fourth best away record in the league and the 18th worst at home someone’s just told me.

“For some reason we just keep getting done on the counter-attack at home. Teams get behind the ball and hit us on the break and we can’t deal with it. It’s one of the areas we need to improve for next year.

“It’s not a one-off tonight. We let in three against Watford, Middlesbrough and Reading, so I know where we need to improve.

“There are a lot of good things that have happened since I’ve been here. Tonight wasn’t an eye opener for me, it’s a huge disappointment, but I know where we need to get better.”

Despite having a lot of the ball, Jewell felt his team made too few chances: “That’s typical of us at home. We don’t create a huge amount for the possession we have.

“Norwich broke and were incisive, were quick, they passed the ball, the two strikers hold the ball up and they’ve got a threat in behind.

“We haven’t got that at the moment. We need somebody we know is going to get us a goal but having said that we don’t create an awful lot.”

The Town manager was disappointed that even when the Blues managed to get something resembling a foothold in the game, they conceded another goal almost immediately: “We got back in it at 3-1 with a worldy from Jimmy and we’re thinking it’s going to be a rousing 10 minutes, then within two minutes from our corner — yet again and how many times have we said that this season? — the game’s over.”

Norwich boss Paul Lambert dismissed suggestions that it had been easy for his side: “There’s no game I’ve ever been involved in in my life that’s been easy. I think every game is hard and you have to earn the right to win football matches.

“I thought my team right from the off were extraordinary in the football that they played. It was incredible right from the off.

“We were up against a team which has been on fire lately and with a crowd as vibrant as anywhere we’ve been, so to come here and do what we’ve done was a big, big test of character and I thought the performance was excellent.”

this game shows us for what we are, very brittle throughout, capable of letting in goals by the bucketful.
as a collective are back four are very poor (still am concerned that we could have the same centre back partnership next season thats just not been good enough this season).
will need new strikers and plenty of tlc ,hope this result dosent kill of any season ticket doubters.

There is a lot of hot air amongst these comments but plenty of common sense as well. Clearly Town were beaten by a better team who out thought, out fought and generally out played us.
Whilst I think he will be positive in the long term Paul Jewell nust take the responsibility for the failings last night. Sadly it could take 2 or 3 seasons to make Town more competitive as it will take time for new players to settle into the required playing style - hopefully not 4-5-1 at home.
On recent performances Lee-Barrett, Kennedy, O'Dea, Norris, Scotland should go immediately. To retain continuity the following should form the basis of next season's squad; Fulop, Murphy, Brown, Mcauley, Delaney, Smith, O'Connor, Edwards, Peters, Hyam, Leadbitter, Martin, Healy, Drury, Wickham, Carson, plus the other "reserves" who have been offered contracts. Priskin could be added to that if he returns as he does seem to have something (he scored for Swansea against Norwich after all). Some of these players could be sold to strengthen the team, none of them is indispensable.
On this basis we need about 7 players to boost the squad - right and left full back, central midfield and strikers, and possibly goalkeeper and centre back. These need to be experienced Championship plus players, not has beens or youngsters with potential,
I doubt Paul Jewell will achieve this in one close season as the club has a poor record of attracting that type of player. However it will be preferable to watch the team develop over a number of seasons than the poor quality that has been offered this season with the overrated and over paid current squad members.
I wish Paul Jewell well as he approaches the summer months and contract negotiations.

We must be the worst fans in the whole f'ing world! We need to be entertained in order to get behind the team, just like the kids of today, no creativity at all. Where are the songs to our players? Where are the support when it's really needed. PR has become just a big dark grave, were people come along to slaughter their own team. You should stand behind them and give them all you love, so maybe we can help them make PR a fortress once again. The atmosphere is so much better at the away games, thanks to the real and dedicated supporters. It would be good if the fans did a preseason aswell, and came back in August singing their hearts out for their beloved team. I'm disgraced by our performance today, and it hurts extra as it was against our arch rivals. But I don't think one bad game should lead to the fact that so many of us wanting to ditch the whole squad, but one lonee, who I really think has got to much credit. If you look back and reflect on the games Bullard has played, who gold has he been? He loses the ball in dangerous positions to often, as it's to easy to knock the ball og him. What he does give us is creativity and deadballs. What I'm trying to say is that there are other players that I think deserve massive credit for their contributions. The likes of McAuley, Delaney, Wickham and Martin, who look like a new signing after Jewell brought him back from loan. I think we need to look at the contract situation

I hope that Marcus Evans was there last night to see that dross and how badly he needs to get his chequebook out. It was really a case of the Jekyll & Hyde Town that we have been for a while now, you never know which one will emerge from the tunnel.
I agree that now this match is out of the way, play the fringe players, I would like to Hyam play again, O'Connor should be given a run out and Peters too. The least PJ could have done last night was to use some subs, they couldn't have been much worse than was on the pitch already.

BIG FAT PAUL'S BARMY ARMY?

Stop whinging!

We are lucky we are not in the bottom three this year. The pressure got to them and they reverted. BFP will have sat them down and told them to remember the feeling and make sure it doesn't happen again.

We were made to look bad by what was a very good norwich side. There is a reason why they're fighting for an automatic promotion place and why we're in a mid table position. Norwich are a good side (im going to get roasted for saying that). The comments this morning are much more reasonable than the rip up there contract ones from last night. I would like to see peters, o'connor, hyam playing but we dont know whats going on in training so we shouldnt be jumping to conclusions and becoming whoppits.

I saw a new face in the crowd last night. Roy Hodgson I wonder who he was watching (Bullard perhaps anyway you do not need loads of money to spend just the right players as Norwich have proved.
If we had have made the playoffs we could possibly have played Norwich again home and away ? I do not think we could stand anymore humiliation from them this season, enough said !!!!

Last night proved only one thing that on the night we were not good enough to beat a well organised team, that's all, it did not prove any player was not good enough or deserves to stay or leave the club. It did not show who wants or does not want to be at the club.
It did not not show how good a manager PJ is!
It was just a bl**dy game of football.
Not the end of the world, a bit depressing maybe, but we will recover.
A few years back we were all gloating as Norwich were relegated and we had the money, they were going to struggle for years, we were going to the promised land under a new young manager.
After following this club for a number of years I have come to one conclusion we are not as good as we think we are, but we're not as bad as the Scum think we are.
Keep the faith we will recover!

At least the following two comments posted on here have helped me smile. You've just got to laugh at some people's posts.

from Pimsnumber1 - bullard scored a great goal but did little else.

From Tractorboy99 - we created loads more chances than them.

REALLY ?????

That result really has put things into perspective! let's face it we played a Norwich team that is clearly better than us and it shows just how far we have to go in order next season to get to the play-offs. The results although somewhat improved under Jewell still remain fairly inconsistent and that's the way things have been at this club for some years now and personally all this talk about get contracts cleared up for some players are clearly over the top. As mentioned by a few others on this site some players should be let go - Norris (not imposing enough in midield, some will say he scores goals but that's due to the position he plays in) Kennedy, O'Dea, Healy, Scotland etc there should be a big clear out this summer and personally think we need a proven goal scorer another top midfielder and a decent right back, Tommy Smith who did very well in the world cup should be given another chance next season. Nice little eye-opener last night which should put things into perspective and thank god that I did not by a ticket for the game (I came very close to doing so) yours disappointedly Tim.

It has been obvious for some time that our home form has been a major problem particularly evening league games. By my reckoning last season we played 6 home evening league games and collected 6 points from a possible 18, soring 6 goals and conceding 8. This season has been even worse. Once again we have played 6 home evening league games and collected just 1 point from a possible 18, scoring 5 goals and conceding 19. That means that from 12 matches we have collected just 7 points from a possible 36, scored 11 goals and let in a total of 27.
Anyone feel like backing a campaign to ban home evning league games ?

I think you just need to look at the contract situation and relate it to yourselves to see one major problem. If you knew that your employer would consider to sack you or reduce your wage in a couple of weeks. Under such a uncertain environment, would you be able to stay focused during the whole working day? I guess not. We're having a CEO who is a loose Canon, blaming the players for holding the club to ransome. When in the fact it's he who did it, by not continuing the negation with the players who turned down the deals in December. And why didn't he sort this out in the summer. Thanks to Jewell, it looks like most of them are still wanting to stay. ME could you please remove Clegg the Clown from the wheel and bring in a proper football man.

As many others already has pointed out, what has happend to Peters (guess his flexability turns him down a bit), Hyam and Drury. These players has performed for us earlier but seems to be totaly out of the picture. Peters should get anrun of games at one of the wings, as he's pacy and has great work rate. I know Drury have been used as a sub In a few games, but if you saw him against Hull you would ask yourselves, why on earth doesn't he play regulary. Hyam is the holding midfielder in our squad. He does The dirty stuff quite well, and deserves a run out.

Why we didn't rest Leadbitter after such a heavy blow, I don't know, but the lad wasn't 100% yesterday. Scotland would do better for the club if he was flipping burgers behind the Britania Stand. I can't see why Jewell still plays him as a lone striker, when we all can see that the only threat he's bringing is more pressure on our own defence. Scotland is pocher, not a target man. Also if Jewell says he would like to add a holding midfielder to help the defence, test Hyam in that role. Walk the walk, Paul... In fact if you look at Man U, their squad isn't better than many of the teams behind them, but Fergie has the skill to make the players belive, and that is a massive strength. I wish I knew what Jewell focused on in his teamtalk. Oh well enough said. PS sorry for posting a couple of half ones! BFJ's barmy army!

I was there, watched tfrom 10 minutes onwards (thanks to the morons outside). For the first 20 minutes we were much better side, and it made me sick that we were losing. But for the last 30 minutes they gave up, no excuse for that sorry.

Last time the Budgies tonked us, earlier in the season, we all blamed Keano and he was duly sacked.

Is it time for Jewell to go?

OK - I am only joking, but this was no joke!

But of much more importance, was the terrible mindless group of supporters who set out with only one aim in mind - to cause trouble. We are a friendly, well supported club and we don't need these mindless thugs dragging our good name through the dirt. If you know any of them, shop them!

'Their strikers are good players and they gave us a hard time' - Note the word STRIKERS Paul - and they were the away side. Inexcusable playing one up in such a big game - and Scotland at that. Sorry PJ, thought you got it horribly wrong. Please re-assess this home tactic for next season as it hasn;t been working. Lots todo in the Summer as well. Best of luck.

Morning all,

So... the morning after the s***e before. Obviously the result was a major disappointment, but in fairness Norwich are a good side this year and if they go up, hats off to them. I have decided to post to see what people think about an off-pitch issue- the atmosphere in the stands.

As my user name suggests, I live away so don't get to games as often as I'd like anymore (last night was my first live game since Forest and Chelsea in January). Therefore, when I do go, I do so in the naive hope that regardless of the result, I'll at least enjoy the atmosphere, or the event if you will. Sadly last night, the positives had all been exhausted after the pre-match Portman Pie and Samba group (both of which were very enjoyable).

After kick-off, not only did we take an absolute knobbing (hey, these things happen) but I also had to put up with an absolute idiot sitting behind me. You all know the sort: negative, sarcastic, loud-mouthed 'jokes'/comments throughout, has clearly never played the game. Why bother to turn up if you're going to be like that? He stressed me out far more than the result...

...Admittedly I did buy seats in Britannia Upper, sacrificing ambiance for a decent view. What I don't understand, however, is why people are so negative. In addition, I've noticed that people barely even clap anymore, let alone sing or cheer. This isn't unique to the Britannia Upper, by the way- my last home game I sat in North Stand Lower and was shocked to discover how quiet and negative people were. Since giving up my season ticket in 2007/08 for geographical reasons, I've tried out most areas of the ground and nowhere seems any better. DO any of you regulars have a view on why this situation has arisen and what could/should be done to change it? The quality of football is one thing of course, but much worse teams than ours enjoy much more vocal support.

Playoffs??????

I can't believe that ANY reasonable, thoughtful, football-aware Town fan would even WANT to reach the playoffs!!!

Imagine if we DID get promoted???!!!! Weekly annihilation, misery and hopelessness.

Come on people - let's have some realism.

We're an alright mid-to-lower-table side with a VERY weak, disjointed and disinterested team.

Although I am absolutely NOT having a go at PJ, neither am I particularly inspired and filled with hope for a bright future.

We've got our work cut out and then some. I just can't even see where success might be coming from - but the playoffs - please let's wake up and be very, VERY careful for what we wish for...

And when they nickname a player the 'Hologram', it doesn't mean they are good - aka Arran Lee Barrett - if he wasn't good enough for Hartlepool, he isn't ever going to be anywhere near up to standard for us. He's been a liability waiting to happen.

As for the rest of them, if Norris seriously believes he deserves a pay rise he can kiss my a*** and bugger off. Only Bullard and the two young lads last night were fit to wear the shirt. Disgraace

How many games this year have we conceded 4 or more goals? Two I believe, and correct me if I'm wrong but they have both been at the hands of Norwich. Proves that they are a class above, a top two team and that expecting a win before the game was naive.

Against a lot of other teams in this div. we would have seen a different game with that performance. They were just too good for us and that's a fact. We weren't great but they were too good. If it had been Qpr last night, yes we would be hurting and disappointed but most would have accepted it as its top of the league Qpr. Everyone needs to realise that our rivals are now a class side, mostly thanks to the manager as most are league one players, and they deserve to go up. We are a mid table team (thanks to Keane, I'd like to see the league table starting from when Jewell took over) . We're not two even teams as we have been in recent years, they are far better than us and we have to accept that.

@ITFCCenFrance

Gave up my South Stand Lower S/T 5 yrs ago because atmosphere around me died - all the corporate johnnies sitting behind us talking sh*te all through the game just spoilt it. Since then have tried every stand with my 14 yr old - just want to find somewhere livelier.
Am still looking. South Stand Upper this season has been an embarrassment - so quiet. So often this season just surrounded by silent stony faced miserable people, even when we're winning.
Hate West Ham, but the banter and crack at Upton Park is what its about. Instead, I'm surrounded by quiet old ladies with flasks on their laps. Its so sh*te at Portman Road these days.
