Jewell: Embarrassing Scoreline
Jewell: Embarrassing Scoreline
Thursday, 21st Apr 2011 22:56

Town boss Paul Jewell said he was hugely disappointed after what he described as his side’s “embarrassing” 5-1 home defeat to Norwich in the East Anglian derby at Portman Road.

Jewell said: “I’m hugely disappointed, it’s a local derby, it’s a full house and you want to try and put on a decent show for your supporters but unfortunately it’s an embarrassing scoreline really, there’s no doubt about it.

“I think possession-wise we probably had more than them, we probably had more attempts on goal than them, but they’re clinical in the box.

“Their strikers are good players and they gave us a hard time. It’s obvious that in both boxes they were exceptional and we were average to say the least.”

The Blues boss says his team’s lack of a predatory frontman was again all too evident: “It hasn’t just been notable tonight, I’ve been talking about it for some while.

“We’ve got the fourth best away record in the league and the 18th worst at home someone’s just told me.

“For some reason we just keep getting done on the counter-attack at home. Teams get behind the ball and hit us on the break and we can’t deal with it. It’s one of the areas we need to improve for next year.

“It’s not a one-off tonight. We let in three against Watford, Middlesbrough and Reading, so I know where we need to improve.

“There are a lot of good things that have happened since I’ve been here. Tonight wasn’t an eye opener for me, it’s a huge disappointment, but I know where we need to get better.”

Despite having a lot of the ball, Jewell felt his team made too few chances: “That’s typical of us at home. We don’t create a huge amount for the possession we have.

“Norwich broke and were incisive, were quick, they passed the ball, the two strikers hold the ball up and they’ve got a threat in behind.

“We haven’t got that at the moment. We need somebody we know is going to get us a goal but having said that we don’t create an awful lot.”

The Town manager was disappointed that even when the Blues managed to get something resembling a foothold in the game, they conceded another goal almost immediately: “We got back in it at 3-1 with a worldy from Jimmy and we’re thinking it’s going to be a rousing 10 minutes, then within two minutes from our corner — yet again and how many times have we said that this season? — the game’s over.”

Norwich boss Paul Lambert dismissed suggestions that it had been easy for his side: “There’s no game I’ve ever been involved in in my life that’s been easy. I think every game is hard and you have to earn the right to win football matches.

“I thought my team right from the off were extraordinary in the football that they played. It was incredible right from the off.

“We were up against a team which has been on fire lately and with a crowd as vibrant as anywhere we’ve been, so to come here and do what we’ve done was a big, big test of character and I thought the performance was excellent.”

I said before the match that if Scotland plays its Jewell out for me (joking), but that did annoy me because he is just a lump and I'm not saying anymore as we've all heard it before, and it is beyond bizarre how peters hasn't played a minute under Jewell (i think, millwall away maybe).

I know Jewell has done well for us
However Keane had 8 wins in his last 24 and Jewell has had 9 wins in the last 21, better but still not brillieant lots of work for the summer.

Why does he not give O'Connor and Peters ago now that Martin is out

That's the most painful match I've ever been too. It really hurts and thanks to fuking National Distress I didn't even get to the game until the 60th minute. Wish that journey from London had taken even longer than the 3 hours it did actually. No width, no pace. Can't trap a ball or pass. Old and slow at the back. Missing in midfield. Naive and alone up front. Why were we worried about the out of contact players not signing up? They dont deserve contracts. I would drive Norris to Portsmouth myself. There is not a single player worth keeping except Bullard. Can we withdraw the offers now? Why were we seemingly playing one up front for so long? Why was Peters not involved? Why has Hyam vanished? The same old cross field ball to Edwards to run against 3 opposition or to the left just to be knocked backwards infield. Slow, obvious and shockingly bad. Jewel needs a major clear out and to get them ways left learning the basics.

It hurts but there will be plenty more derbies that go our way, just somes up our season tonight had nothing going forward and just so many sloppy mistakes at the back- but tonight Nodge took those chances and fair play to them on that aspect.

Embarrassing scoreline. Gutless drivel by most of the team who earn money that most HARD WORKING people can only dream of. Some of these players need to take a very long hard look at themselves, donate their wages to charity, those who obviously don,t want to give 100% can sod off in the summer.

'dont lets them sign up' Well thats ridiculous. just yesterday we all said about how we could only progress with macca and delaney in the side. and of course after one bad performance we should all just terminate there contracts and start from scratch. Get real people!!! We were always going into this game as underdogs so lets just calm down and stay real. I admit it was a dreadful performance but the only reason these comments are on hear is because it was the derby. If it was QPR wr had just lost to the comments would be about how we would expect it. so please calm down. I know that i'm going to be the only one here tonight being any bit positive so dont be mean. cheers.

I'm gutted :( can only say two good things jimmy bullard and when I got home!
Delany and gmac are ok players at times they look amazing but then bye bye concentration, I hope we get a mark Hudson or a chris wood and a proper couple of wingbacks... midfield I'm pretty happy but I do think we could do with a holding player and I would really like a pacy midfielder to get at teams .... and ofcourse we need our very own quality strikers .... btw I think holt OS woeful fat and lazy!

Greenwichblue - well said fully agree..for what it is worth! Scotland I feel for, he is a decent player as proved with Swansea, but up front on his own at home is never going to work! and then to put two teenagers against two pro centre halves.. umm! Connor Wickham looked far from £15m tonight! but i am not going to slag off an 18 year old, as stated in previous post just hope so many lessons have been learned tonight and Marcus Evans can dig deep and support Paul Jewell who has a hard summer ahead of him and if so we can be feeling like Norwich supporters this time next year!

I trust Jewell to do what is needed this summer. He cleared out lots of dead wood to make Wigan and Bradford successful and I have no doubt he can pull it off...not jealous of him for having that task though.

A shocking level of perssonell overhaul is required this summer.

- need a new keeper, Lee Barrett is a good goalkeeper but his performance tonight certainly looked like that of one we released as a youngster 10 years ago...
- need new full backs, Edwards has been thrown in to an unsuited position, due much to the incompetence of mr Keane not being able to spend any of his £6/7million on a quality attack minded and athletic full back...Russell Martin cost peanuts, there are good full backs out there for very little if you look hard enough
- We need a more mobile midfield- Bullard has been excellent, but he needs faster midfielders around him to make the most of his excellent technique and open up opposition teams. Leadbitter, sadly is not fast, nor is Norris, who has to run around like a drugged up gerbil all the time to keep up with play because he can not read a game to save his life. We need another Martin on the other side (let's give Carson a bit of time before we make any real judgement on what he is capable of, I know that will go down like a lead balloon, but has to be said)

Strikers- Scotland is appalling, Priskin is never going to be a 20 goal a season striker for us, nor is Wickham (yet, he has a lot to learn). Then again, it is proven to be much easier to score goals if the support behind you is better- no1 can make 20 goals on their own.

PS. Holt certainly looked like a player carrying an injury tonight...not

Some of the comments seem a bit over the top to me
but just remember where were were before Paul Jewel came to Ipswich
I think we are a couple of strikers and a full back away from being a good side

Re Jamie Peters, yes I think he should be given a go but remember he was not that great when he played at fullback. He has, like Edwards, poor positional sense

cheer up people, mind you that's easy for me to say sitting on the patio in sunny

It's funny how we all saw things differently tonight. Think that's evident of how frustrating it's been being a Town fan this season (and for the last 3-4 seasons).

Tonight was just awful. Never left a game that early and hope I never do again. But Town deserved their fans leaving early because that was pathetic. There were in MY opinion some players that deserved credit. Bullard, Edwards, McAuley and Drury deserved credit. The rest were at best average for me.

Looking forward to the end of the season now and what Jewell will do in that summer.

Garbage....rip up the contracts of all the players...start from scratch- embarassment to the badge. I am so mad right now. What is the matter with Peters, O'Connor and Hyam?
Go home O'Dea. Why in hockey can they pull the goalie off the field but never in football! If you are playing terrible you get substituted even if you are a goalie.
Finish this season now

Was that a nightmare and a bad dream, both I believe. However after travelling all the way from oxfordshire to the game I think I and bullard was the only ones that turned up.

The rest of the team were still returning from Bristol as they were not in the game. I was disgusted with the whole performance. Norwich were organised and did the job. I thought that players like Norris, Scotland, leadbetter, mcauley and wickam just did not look interested. Norris should go now, Scotland is past it and should be sold, leadbetter is just lost it, mcauley just a. Waste of time and if some team wants to pay silly money for wickam do it. Bullard showed he is the only player who deserves his wage, we needed a11 more of him.

Well also what disgusted me was the town fans fighting each other. You call yourself fans. Your more like animals and to be truthful if that's what going to happen in future I will call it a day now. Also where were the police in the ground. The stewards needed more assistance and really they did a good job to get those wasters out of the ground. I felt so angry that after travelling all this way for a game that should be passionate on the pitch and ended with a brawl with its own fans I can't justify paying £28 for a ticket and £30 for travel.

What's even hard to take is my girlfriend is a norwich fan and i am going to suffer big time. However I will still wear my town shirt with pride unlike those 10 on the pitch.

Pj you need to sort it out and get rid of keanes dead wood and bring back the old town back.

How much chance of holding on to Jimmy Bullard now ? Sadly, if the likes of Norwich or QPR did come in for him, I can't see him staying. Boy, would I love to be proved wrong ! [ It wouldn't be the first time ! ]

How does the calculated gamble of only having 2 strikers look now? Could Murray and Priskin have been any worse. 2-0 down and take off your centre forward for a midfielder. Just about sums it up. Give out of contract players till monday to sign or drop them and prepare for next season.
