McAuley Reported to Have Agreed Terms With Rangers
McAuley Reported to Have Agreed Terms With Rangers
Saturday, 30th Apr 2011 09:14

SPL giants Rangers have agreed a deal with out-of-contract Town defender Gareth McAuley, according to a tabloid report this morning. The Glasgow club have been linked with the Northern Irishman for a number of weeks.

Town have agreed new terms with McAuley’s agent but the former Leicester and Lincoln man has not put pen to paper on his new Portman Road deal.

West Brom are also said to have been chasing the former Blues skipper with Baggies manager Roy Hodgson at the recent Town-Norwich derby.

McAuley misses today's game against Preston with a groin muscle tear and may well have played his last game for the Blues.

In January, Town boss Paul Jewell targeted Preston's Sean St Ledger and with the Lilywhites relegated, the Irish international may well be on Jewell's summer wish-list. The 26-year-old is currently out of action with a knee injury.

Would've preffered to have got rid of Delaney and kept MCAuley but hey ho.

I'm sure PJ will find much better & hopefully a decent "captain" figure at the back, something we've lacked badly since DeVos retired.

Some may feel that the SPL is an inferior league and even though I come from fair Glasgow itself I could almost agree.
What must be considered however is that for guys such as McA the chance to play infront of 47000 fans at home games, be part of a culture that those outside Glasgow will not understand and to earn some money that has effectively to last him for the rest of his life is a powerful draw that must be given consideration.
Those that think that you must have ITFC tattooed on you chest are I feel sadly naive. These are professionals whose commitment cannot be doubted but who realistically are driven by using their skills to achieve maximum earnings in a relatively short career.
If he wants to go, then so be it. If he wants to stay then fine. Have a rest for the summer then along with the others, come back fighting, hungry and earn your place in the team.

IF TRUE - then best of luck to McAuley - if we really wanted to keep hold of him and Norris, we would have sensibly agreed terms with them last Summer - surely? Oh no, that's right Clegg is in charge. If he goes, we had our chance and left it tolate. End of story really.

I wish McAuley all the best if he decides to go to Rangers...he has been one of our best performers during these last few dire years. He has done Ipswich proud and can leave knowing he did not let himself or the team down.

He's been a good player for us, but he's replaceable. Whilst it is good to have experience in a team, we do seem to have a lot of ageing players. Replacing McAuley with a 26-year-old like St Ledger would be good for the team I think. A fairly young, but proven goalscorer up front is also needed.

McAuley is a very average Championship defender - nothing more and nothing less! Yes he has probably had his best season here but that's not saying much in my view.

We need far better quality than him, and Delaney, to challenge at the top of this division.

Would be very sad to see him go. 4get Wickham,Mcauley is the only player at the club who could play in the prem.As with De vos he may not be fleet of foot but his reading of the game is excellent and without him this season we would hav capitulated, seems 2b the only real leader out there and in the backs to the wall away performances he stands head and shoulders above anyone else. We will very much regret being so casual about letting him go.

willrigs16 - your assessment and comments on McAuley are spot on - good post.
Unfortunately some people will only see things the way they want to - thus often being far removed from actual reality in their views.
Lot's of evidence of that - but everyone's entitled to their opinion.

If you do move Gareth it's unfortunate that this club has not done right by you, undoubtedly you should be staying, and that contract should have been presented and signed LAST summer.
My personal thanks for your significant contribution to keeping us in the Championship for another season at least.
You will be difficult to replace for sure.

Well said, Karlosfandangle, couldn't put it better myself. Leeking goals like we have done over past few years hardly suggests good defence. Tommy Smith ready made replacement.

I love McCauley, great servant to the club, one of the best. Hold on, this says he's leaving? Boooooo, just leave, never good enough for us anyway. SEEEEYA

Personally, would liked him to have signed. I know its difficult as an ardent fan not to get annoyed or upset when a player has the audacity not to want to sign or play for your team but it's reality. Reckon had PJ been in charge since the summer he'd be signed up for a few seasons longer already. IF he goes to Rangers he'll do very well. Bougherra is moving to the English Prem by all accounts and Weirs likely to retire so they're crying out for centre halfs.
