Chopra Targeting Premier League as Evans Linked Again
Chopra Targeting Premier League as Evans Linked Again
Saturday, 11th Jun 2011 08:17

New striker Michael Chopra has targeted scoring the goals which fire the Blues back to the Premier League as Town are reported to be in talks with another frontman. Sheffield United’s Ched Evans is said to be speaking to the Blues and Leicester City regarding a £1.2 million switch with the Blades having been relegated to League One.

Former Cardiff man Chopra said: "The club is ambitious. Ipswich want to be back in the Premier League and hopefully I can play my part in that being achieved. I've scored goals at this level before and I want to do the same for Ipswich.

"I'm looking forward to reporting for pre-season [on June 29th] and getting down to work with the other players, getting on with the job of trying to win promotion.

"There are good players here. It's a club with a lot of potential. It's a club that has been in the Premier League before and I'm here to help them get back to that level again."

Wales international Evans has been linked with the Blues on a number of occasions this summer and, like Chopra, was previously a target of former boss Roy Keane.

Meanwhile, released Town striker Kevin Lisbie says he’s not sure whether he will be staying with loan club Millwall: "Unfortunately, we are a long way from agreeing terms at the moment.

"I spoke to the gaffer at the end of the season and he told me that he was going to offer me something.

"He did offer me something, but I'm not keen on what he offered me, so I'm hoping that they will come back to me with an improved deal, but we will have to wait and see.”

Colchester have also been linked with their former striker but manager John Ward says he’s not yet made the 32-year-old an offer.

Another ex-Blues frontman, Dean Bowditch, has been linked with the U’s having turned down a new contract at Yeovil.

Elsewhere, a report in South Yorkshire says exiting Town defender Troy Brown will sign for Rotherham this week, as first revealed by TWTD a fortnight ago.

Nobody knows how much PJ has been promissed by ME to get him to join the club? He may not need to sell Wickham to fund a summer re-shuffle. I also think it is definately in Connor's hands. I think that Scotland could surprise us all next season. He was prolific at swansea in a partnership, where as since he has arrived he has been stuck up top by himself. Give him a good partner in 442 formation?? TP is a gonna!! Lets just hope for the best for the club! (whatever that may be)COYB's

Not overwhelmed by Ched Evans but perhaps I am expecting too much. He scores one in four games does not have pace and has generally disappointed since his heady days at Norwich. He is fractionally over 6ft but to me does not have an aerial presence. Like others please keep Wickham and go for a Billy Sharp fox in the box. As for Lisbie a fiver a week is too much he needs to get real.

Evans would be okay but no more than that. Personally I think we could do better. He is reported to be on £20K per week, which is far too much for a player with a recent poor goals ratio.

Wouldnt mind Evans tbh...although i can see him going to Leicester really, having played under Sven previously. But who knows!

I signed Evans on FM2011 and he got 36 goals!!!! lets hope he's as successful in real life. He's 6'' so we'll be signing a target man to play alongside the smaller Chopra, could be a replacement for Wickham, who, if we get £9-10m for would be good business.

As someone pointed out the other day, Evans is not the only player for the Blades not to do well, maybe its possible he's getting the wrong coaching or its just the wrong club. He did show good potential as a youngster, I think with PJ et al coaching him, they could possibly bring out the best in him. Would still like to see a Sharpe type of character bought in.

just a point to those who keep saying they not want evans because of his record at the blades last season, but want sharp. he too was rubbish when he was at sheffield, & they had a better team then too. so regardless of how evans did, that not necessarily mean hes a bad player anymore than sharp having a good season at donny makes him a great player. yes, id probably prefer sharp myself, but would give evans my backing too should he put on the blue & white of itfc.

sheff utd fan here, @yorksblue Evans is neither lightweight or lazy, he will do well at any club that plays football cause he is a decent player who got no service at us cause all we do is lump it up to Henderson (worst striker ive ever seen at Bramall Lane) and while Henderson was injured it was Cresswell so when Ched got the ball he either just refused to pass or had a shot from 30 yards out of pure frustration but with the right service and the ball to feet he would be a great championship striker, also seen a lot of people mentioning Billy Sharp and James Coppinger which would be great signings for Ipswich, Sharp is a born goalscorer (yet another player Sheff Utd didn't appreciate) and Copps is a good midfielder. Hope Wickham doesnt just go to Liverpool and become a nobody cause from what i saw of him against us he is a quality player. All the best for next season.

Its all well and good getting Chopra in he is a fantastic player and linked with several other strikers but the problem is how are they going to score goals when we wont have anyone assisting them. Jewell please sort this out. Also Connor Wickham is way too young to be sold he needs to be kept after all we will offer him best development we will get more money for him and he doesnt want to move

I honestly don't think that Wickham will leave this season. He's got a good head on him and he knows he'll get more experience with us than in the Prem.

Judging from what PJ has said in the past and with Evans being linked, I could easily see Wickham played as an AM behind Chopra/Another Striker as part of his "footballing education". He's certainly versatile enough (think back to the Arsenal games/ times he's played on the left wing) and I've got a feeling that he'd do well in that position.

Plus, it's less "pressure" on the lad. He's not expected to score 20+ goals as a lone striker but can get further experience in the game - something every youngster needs if they are to make it.

I hope you're right. But modern ambitious young players perceive that they'll get a lot more benefit training with the modern superstars than playing in a second rate league like the Championship.

The rest of us know that 'the school of hard knocks' will serve any footballer well whatever his view of the world, and some really do understand this, but when the top teams come knocking the sometimes delusional urge to be a part of their future can be irresistable. If Liverpool, Sunderland et al can convince CW that a place at the Premiership trough is there now, he won't turn it down. For that matter, neither will ITFC; even the purported £8 million+ is too good to resist particularly when it can fund a complete squad restructure.

One thing's for sure, his inclusion in the under 21 squad this summer is not going to help ITFC. A country bumpkin (sic) sitting at the top table of his peers, pretty much all of whom are attached to Premiership clubs; if he doesn't see what he's missing by the end of this, I'll be very surprised.

Evans would not be an upgrade over most of our forwards...even if Wickham goes, Chopra and Priskin would be one of the better strike pairings in the Championship...we need to focus our limited resources on areas where we having a gaping hole in quality...Centre Back, 2 x full backs and centre midfield...

I'm liking the idea of bringing in Shelvey...Liverpool are now crowded in centre midfield with the addition of Henderson and so a loan deal shouldn't be dependent on Wickham going the other way...

St Ledger would be very nice at Centre Back...not sure about 33-year old Ingermasson though...

Blue041273......I agree 100%.
The lure of "Liverpool" and the "premiership" will be hard to turn down.

i'll always remember priskins disallowed overhead kick against arsenal, just a shame that game was the only time we've seen his true form. how about carson up front?

he was certainly impressive when playing for nobitch and scored a great goal against us

Think Evans would be a good signing to go with Chopra. Not the first striker to have a poor spell at Sheffield united
