Jewell: Disappointed But Not Too Downcast
Jewell: Disappointed But Not Too Downcast
Saturday, 13th Aug 2011 18:02

Blues boss Paul Jewell was disappointed with Town’s 1-0 home defeat to Hull City but just as he wasn’t getting carried away after last week’s 3-0 win at Bristol City, he wasn’t too downcast.

Jewell said: “There weren’t that many chances in the game. They’ve come away from home and done a job on us really.

“They changed their formation and stifled us. We’ve had maybe a chance with Lee Martin, but at home you expect more than just two or three chances.

“It’s disappointing from my point of view, but we weren’t getting carried away last week and we’re not too disappointed this week.”

The Town manager was particularly unhappy with the way his defence was caught out for the goal: “We’ve got the ball on the edge of their box and one ball later it’s in the back of our net. It’s hugely disappointing.

“I said at half-time we’ve got to get used to getting draws. I know that sounds stupid but it’s always win or lose with us, we don’t get enough draws.

“If we don’t win games we’ve got to make sure we’re dogged. We could have been sitting here with four points. We wouldn’t have been happy but at least we would have got something out of the game.

“It was just the type of counter-attacking goal we were talking about last season. Very disappointing.”

Moving on to his continuing attempts to add to his squad, Jewell wouldn’t be drawn on whether his central defensive target was Stoke’s Ryan Shotton and revealed the Blues are also awaiting the outcome of a second bid: “As I’ve said before, there are lots of clubs in for the same players. We’ve got two bids in actually and I’m surprised they haven’t come out.

“Premier League teams are waiting to see what they can get in before. It’s a frustrating time and I can’t tell you any more than I told you on Thursday.

“I’ve spoken to lots of managers about players and I wouldn’t like anyone commenting on my players, so I have to respect them.”

The Blues boss confirmed that Liverpool's Daniel Ayala was a target: “We were in for Ayala, he’s obviously going to Norwich, to a Premier League team, so that’s what you’re up against.

"The type of player we’re looking for, all the Championship teams and even some Premier League teams are looking at as well.”

Jewell played down reports that Leeds want to take Tamás Priskin on loan and Ibrahima Sonko’s comment that he “could meet with my friend Ívar [Ingimarsson] again soon” in a recent tweet: “He might be going to dinner with him!”

Hull boss Nigel Pearson said finally winning after two successive home defeats came as a relief: “Absolutely. Before we took the field today, I know we’re only two games in, but there was big pressure

"I was really pleased, not just with the result but how we played was really positive.”

It was Hull's first win at Portman Road in 21 years, and only their second ever.

Well, I can't believe I have spent 3 months waiting so excitedly for the new season, only to be served up the same old dross we saw last season!! I thought PJ was an advocate of 4-4-2? Felt sorry for Chops!! Disappointing, ... boring, ... and going by the second half performance in particular, a predictable result! Oh and why was the ball hoofed up into the air so much? I ended up with a neck ache!! Grrrrrr ...

By far and away our biggest problem is CB. Huge linchpin positions that make a huge impact all over the park. They forge a solid backline, are often first to touch short balls from GK's and are the useful big guys that come up for set plays at the other end. Smith and Delaney are poor all over. We saw this with Delaney last season, Macauley bailing him out all the time.

Please let one of these new players be a CB.

And yeah, two upfront at home please.

JET was awful but don't drop him, if we do then he will have low morale and no faith in PJ, I thought smith was ok apart from the goal and a little mistake in the first half
DD was too attacking in the second half, there goal came from him bombing forward and not coming back leaving smith on his own. It's been 2 games FFS

Dd bombing forward, now that's a very scarey thought!!! He was good in the air today that I will give him but does seem to want to bring the ball out then doesn't really know where to go with it!!

my biggest concern from the two home games so far has been the lack of creativity so far from the centre of the park. Healy/Drury/ Hyam on Tues and Bowyer/Leadbitter/Kennedy today. Can't remember a single decent chance being carved out by them throughout the two games. Agree with most of the above desperately need a CB, a quality partner for Chops and someone in the middle of the park who can pick a pass.

bluelady - makes you wonder just who the people 'leading the boring lives' actually are, when 'certain people' are in fact satisfied with non entertainment and defeat !!.

Been reading through some of the frankly hysterical comments on here. Two games into the league, one win one loss with only one goal conceded yet there are people on here seemingly ready to break out the cyanide capsules.

I think I even read somewhere that, apparently based on this result, that Jewell clearly isn't the right manager for us, and drivel about how useless the board are because they didn't appoint Lambert. Words literally fail me. Get a grip people ffs.

Some people must think that the season finishes today! No patience in too many supporters although can't see how some would be called that with some comments made.

PJ has been here for 8 months and His signings have played 2 league games. What do people think we are going to do? Win every game?

Rome was not built in a day and some people get realistic. So sad that some seem to revel in negativity.

I have got massive faith in PJ but it has been obvious for too long that we are missing a commanding centre back and this should have been addressed by now.

I am bored by the stories of the centre backs we have missed out on.

H32. Like bluelady, i was out having a life. I expect you didn,t attend today. You now are becoming bloody tedious with your constant sniping/moaning. Why dont you & others actually try & SUPPORT our club, not continually being negative. I,m sure you must be perfect in everything you do, say etc, what a bore you must be in polite company. I,m just glad my match days are not ruined by sitting next to H32.

I'm glad some people finally started sticking up for the blues at the end, wasn't half depressing reading peoples reactions to the loss!!

I didn't think we were too bad today just a bit too much long ball! And to be fair I do agree that we need a new CB Ingamarson is waayyyy too injury prone.

AGAIN I thought Cresswell was our best player, think he's great! JET was lazy today but do think he's a good player, would like to see him in the middle. Also I do feel people are being a bit harsh on Lee Martin, I thought he did ok today baring in mind how little he got to play last season. Just two games in though people let's be a bit more optimistic for once!! COYBs

to those of you criticising pjs comments about getting draws. that shows how little you know about football. hes not saying we should go out to look to draw games, just that we either win or lose games. those teams who get success manage, in games like yesterday, when not playing to their best, to get a draw out of the game, something we dont do. those draws picked up in those circumstances can make all the difference come the end of the season.

Smith looked out of his depth at Colchester last season the 2 times I saw him and he looks WAY out of his depth as a first-teamer with us. Should be a reserve at best.

We are only as strong as our weakest link.
Last year it was Eastman.

Wasn't sure if JET was lazy, slow witted or disinterested. Decided all three. With JET, Martin and Carson competing for a wing birth currently, Carson has to play. He did more in 12 mins that JET achieved all game. Only decent games were had by Cresswell, Edwards, Chopra and Stockdale, although the latters distribution was questionable on a number of occasions. All in all lots for BFP to ponder!

Not the result we were hoping for but wasnt expecting an easy game . This season the championship is going to be a very hard league and its anyones guess as to who is gonna be up there at the end of season . For me today Cresswell & Edwards were the best in Blue and Chopra's energy and effort was fantastic . We knew comin into the game today that central defence was gonna be a big problem . For me Smith just isnt good enough and is playing out of his depth in the championship , got turned inside out for their goal . Delaney is ok when he has a srong player alongside him so untill we get a new defender or two we will struggle to keep teams out . Was happy to see Carson come on and show some willing to run at their full backs and give us something that had been missing from the game . Too many long balls going astray today aswell . Still early days and i look forward to cheering the boys on Tuesday night . COYB

I'm really pleased with who we have signed this season so far.
But I'm angry with the state of our defence, and some other things.

1. David Stockdale is a great keeper, but there is always going to be uncertainty about him being recalled, and with only ALB in reserve, i'm not optimistic. Tuesday was an opportune game to give Cropper a game, but no.

2. Carlos Edwards is not a right back, and for some reason he is miles of full match fitness, but in the side. People will point to Joe Royle converting Richard Naylor to a centre back, but he was a unit and we had no money. We have money now, but no recognised right backs and 4 left backs.

3. Letting Brown, Eastman, Meekings and Macauley go. All these 4 are better than Smith are arguably Delaney too. All we have added is Ingarmarrson, who is quality but injury prone.

I won't go on about our negative 4-5-1 system, players who we have let go consistently turning in good performances for their clubs, 2 scoring today (Garvan and Trotter again!) our captain who only passes sideways or backwards, who needs a rocket up his backside and never gives inteviews, players like O'Connor and Priskin being overlooked all the time, no atmosphere at Portman Road with most noise coming from loudmouth racist cockney losers. Proper fans are frustrated and PJ seems to have added to this by signing Emmanuel Thomas (not JET i hate it!).

Rant over

A succession of high scoring strikers have come to this club and immediately have suffered single figure goal-scoring seasons most recently Priskin and Scotland. When is the penny going to drop that it is the supply to them that has always been the problem and not the players themselves.

Too many long straight balls from the back easily dealt with by defenders who can cope with them all day.

Chopra yesterday was having to come too deep just to see the ball in the second half completely nullifying our strike force. JET although a little wasteful at times was at least trying to support him and got taken off for his trouble.

New CBs need to be found for cover. Smith always looks like he has a mistake in him and some of Delaneys passing was awful.

Also in the second half the players looked unfit. Two games into the season and some of them looked burnt out.

Twelve corners and not one put away ? Cresswell has to be one of the best buys of the season !

Agree that from what I saw at yesterday's match that Cresswell was easily MOM. Most disappointing player has to be JET can't see why we have paid £1m plus for a very frustrating player who looks only to be worth £100k atm.Desparately need Cenre half's Delaney was only as good as McAuley made him look last season, Smith looks not to have made progress in fact he's gone backwards. can't understand whywe play 2 left footed CB'S who don't look at all comfortable with the ball on thier right foot it surely would have been better to have played Ainsley who was the better CB tuesday night. Also agree if PJ'S prefered formatition is 4 4 2 that playing Chopra and Priskin together it would bring goals.

eric gates what are you on about? while i agree that smith not up to it ay mo, if you really believe that eastman & meekings better than him then you know nothing about the game at all. as for 4 left backs? our 1st team squad has 2 left backs, cresswell & kennedy. presuming ur includin g josh whight on there but he very much a reserve player, dont know who ur 4th 1 is. village blue? oh dear, i can only presume as uve made the ridiculous statement that jet only worth £100,000 that u werent at bristol or northampton games then? yes, he was disappointing yeaterday but 1 bad game doesnt make him a bad player. or maybe ur suggesting that when rooney jhad a bad world cup, he was only worth £1m rather than the £30m man u paid for him.

I'm surprised to read so many comments relating to the centre backs. Do we need reminding that we only lost 1-0, not 5-0! I'm more concerned about the goals we didn't score rather than the one they managed.

I agree with the remarks about 4-5-1 being too defensive for a home game. In theory this should become a 4-3-3 when we're attacking but in reality Emmanuel-Thomas and Martin really struggled to provide any support to Chopra (who put in a good, but ultimately fruitless shift).

I thought Martin looked out of touch and had difficulty beating the full backs, but it's early in the season and at least he was trying a few thing. Which brings me onto JET... Straight from the pre-match warm up you could tell he wasn't going to put in a full 90 minutes. It sends a terrible message to the other players when you see one of the starters sauntering through the warm up before barely breaking into a run during the match. His replacement, carsson showed what can be achieved by simply turning and running at full backs. He dominated the wing when he came on and I really hope he gets a start in the next game.

Cresswell was excellent all game and I think with the pace we have at full back we can comfortably afford to play 4-4-2 and allow them to overlap. Chopra needs a partner up front, he tried to compete for the long ball but their two tall centre backs coped pretty easily. I think one of the reasons their midfield looked so comfortable was because they weren't worried about what was behind them, they had confidence in the defence to handle our lone forward. A second striker would give us more attacking options and force the opposition to play deeper.

This is itfc's greatest, future manager signing off.
