Jewell: Disappointed But Not Too Downcast
Jewell: Disappointed But Not Too Downcast
Saturday, 13th Aug 2011 18:02

Blues boss Paul Jewell was disappointed with Town’s 1-0 home defeat to Hull City but just as he wasn’t getting carried away after last week’s 3-0 win at Bristol City, he wasn’t too downcast.

Jewell said: “There weren’t that many chances in the game. They’ve come away from home and done a job on us really.

“They changed their formation and stifled us. We’ve had maybe a chance with Lee Martin, but at home you expect more than just two or three chances.

“It’s disappointing from my point of view, but we weren’t getting carried away last week and we’re not too disappointed this week.”

The Town manager was particularly unhappy with the way his defence was caught out for the goal: “We’ve got the ball on the edge of their box and one ball later it’s in the back of our net. It’s hugely disappointing.

“I said at half-time we’ve got to get used to getting draws. I know that sounds stupid but it’s always win or lose with us, we don’t get enough draws.

“If we don’t win games we’ve got to make sure we’re dogged. We could have been sitting here with four points. We wouldn’t have been happy but at least we would have got something out of the game.

“It was just the type of counter-attacking goal we were talking about last season. Very disappointing.”

Moving on to his continuing attempts to add to his squad, Jewell wouldn’t be drawn on whether his central defensive target was Stoke’s Ryan Shotton and revealed the Blues are also awaiting the outcome of a second bid: “As I’ve said before, there are lots of clubs in for the same players. We’ve got two bids in actually and I’m surprised they haven’t come out.

“Premier League teams are waiting to see what they can get in before. It’s a frustrating time and I can’t tell you any more than I told you on Thursday.

“I’ve spoken to lots of managers about players and I wouldn’t like anyone commenting on my players, so I have to respect them.”

The Blues boss confirmed that Liverpool's Daniel Ayala was a target: “We were in for Ayala, he’s obviously going to Norwich, to a Premier League team, so that’s what you’re up against.

"The type of player we’re looking for, all the Championship teams and even some Premier League teams are looking at as well.”

Jewell played down reports that Leeds want to take Tamás Priskin on loan and Ibrahima Sonko’s comment that he “could meet with my friend Ívar [Ingimarsson] again soon” in a recent tweet: “He might be going to dinner with him!”

Hull boss Nigel Pearson said finally winning after two successive home defeats came as a relief: “Absolutely. Before we took the field today, I know we’re only two games in, but there was big pressure

"I was really pleased, not just with the result but how we played was really positive.”

It was Hull's first win at Portman Road in 21 years, and only their second ever.

Agree with many other posters moaning after 2 games is a joke. Seriously take a good look at yourself and don't bother coming on twtd and don't bother going to PR. It's a long hard season get behind the blues or go and follow Man u, Chelsea.

........... with all the obviously deluded, satisfied people, posting on here why does the Club need to be successful and win matches ? - makes it all too easy for the people owning and running the Club. The likes of ME, SC, PJ, etc; will be well pleased to know they have you all as Supporters - Good Luck and 'keep coughing up' - you sad people.
With Supporters like you - the Glory Days will never return.

Call me Negative - I do not care at all - because the above is absolute fact.

I think the team needs to scrap this one up front lark, get Priskin, or Ellington up there with Chops and JET playing behind the two (Yes i believe if Ellington gets games he will eventually get going). I dont know about the midfield though with that set up, but i know that JET looked like he was lost on that flank and should be moved to the middle. Stockdale looks class and will win us games saving us from our cliche defending. I felt sorry for chops at the weekend, hes being asked too much on his own up front. If there is someone else up front causing problems with him too, then he will have more chances to get into the areas he needs to. Hes being marked well, and there is nobody with him to perhaps take the heat off.

I'm posting to apologise to fans for my negative comments I made yesterday.
I didn't go to saturdays game and haven't been at all this season, so have no right to critisize.
I will get behind our players and manager from now on and I hope others will too.
This will help us get Town where we want them to be.
Sorry guys

2 games gone and the usual idiot posters are back !!! We are level with Leicester and West Ham the promotion favourites yet its time to hit the panic button .
Hull are a stong defensive side who ever scored first wins the game ,they did end of . Judge after 12 games that is when we will see where we are about this season not knee jerk reactions good or bad to every game .
We did the same with last seasons start and KIng Keano then suddenly we going down ?
H32 usual comment from someone who doesnt go to the games got no support ,no money and no life

Fact is that we have lost a fair goalie and a reasonable one, a good centre half, a good goal scoring midfield player and a future England squad playing centre forward. Replacements so far; great goalie, injured centre half, good goal scorer who has to feed off a target man, good left back (we need another right back) and a woeful centre forward plus a youngster who is played out of position and who does not look fit. Added to that our only acceptable centre half is injured and also banged his head on saturday ending all hope that he would pass the ball!
We have not progressed yet overall and have only beaten a very bad Bristol City team. I think that is why the negative comments are coming now rather than later?

My thoughts after Saturdays game is that we are in need of two ball playing centre halfs and more creativity in the middle of the park, thought we played ok in the first half and ran out of steam/ideas in the second, agree with others sentiments, one goal was probably going to win it, and did.
Personally not to dispondent as is early days and I'm sure PJ is working hard to rectify, desperately need to improve our home form though.
Too many whingers on here so early in the season, judge after 12 games or so.

Yeah...very early days to start slagging the team off, one thing we don't want though is this lack of confidence at home. If you include the Wolves friendly that's 3 losses on the bounce at home - that's not god enough! Sell Leadbitter and get a more creative midfielder in and sort out the Cb situation.
In this division it's all about minimizing mistakes because week in week out you'll see defensive blunders, goalie mistakes, sending offs etc. and as PJ said last week it's going to be along arduous season and there won't be a lot between the first half dozen teams or so, what we DO need is a good run.

One problem with are home form is are home support. It's not good enough. We only get what we deserve. Away from home we are fantastic.
