Jewell: Disappointed But Not Too Downcast
Jewell: Disappointed But Not Too Downcast
Saturday, 13th Aug 2011 18:02

Blues boss Paul Jewell was disappointed with Town’s 1-0 home defeat to Hull City but just as he wasn’t getting carried away after last week’s 3-0 win at Bristol City, he wasn’t too downcast.

Jewell said: “There weren’t that many chances in the game. They’ve come away from home and done a job on us really.

“They changed their formation and stifled us. We’ve had maybe a chance with Lee Martin, but at home you expect more than just two or three chances.

“It’s disappointing from my point of view, but we weren’t getting carried away last week and we’re not too disappointed this week.”

The Town manager was particularly unhappy with the way his defence was caught out for the goal: “We’ve got the ball on the edge of their box and one ball later it’s in the back of our net. It’s hugely disappointing.

“I said at half-time we’ve got to get used to getting draws. I know that sounds stupid but it’s always win or lose with us, we don’t get enough draws.

“If we don’t win games we’ve got to make sure we’re dogged. We could have been sitting here with four points. We wouldn’t have been happy but at least we would have got something out of the game.

“It was just the type of counter-attacking goal we were talking about last season. Very disappointing.”

Moving on to his continuing attempts to add to his squad, Jewell wouldn’t be drawn on whether his central defensive target was Stoke’s Ryan Shotton and revealed the Blues are also awaiting the outcome of a second bid: “As I’ve said before, there are lots of clubs in for the same players. We’ve got two bids in actually and I’m surprised they haven’t come out.

“Premier League teams are waiting to see what they can get in before. It’s a frustrating time and I can’t tell you any more than I told you on Thursday.

“I’ve spoken to lots of managers about players and I wouldn’t like anyone commenting on my players, so I have to respect them.”

The Blues boss confirmed that Liverpool's Daniel Ayala was a target: “We were in for Ayala, he’s obviously going to Norwich, to a Premier League team, so that’s what you’re up against.

"The type of player we’re looking for, all the Championship teams and even some Premier League teams are looking at as well.”

Jewell played down reports that Leeds want to take Tamás Priskin on loan and Ibrahima Sonko’s comment that he “could meet with my friend Ívar [Ingimarsson] again soon” in a recent tweet: “He might be going to dinner with him!”

Hull boss Nigel Pearson said finally winning after two successive home defeats came as a relief: “Absolutely. Before we took the field today, I know we’re only two games in, but there was big pressure

"I was really pleased, not just with the result but how we played was really positive.”

It was Hull's first win at Portman Road in 21 years, and only their second ever.

JET will blow hot and cold we should all know this. You buy a player like him because you know he could do something special out of nothing, similar to Chopra. If someone would have put away his low ball into the box in the second half after weaving past a couple of players we would all be saying well done another assist and he played well.

I sat next to Fabian and his team of Dutch players over here at the moment. To say one or two of these players were not impressed with our defence , would be an understatement. They asked "who was the No 5...all he does is hoof it ", 'nuff said !!

Ok I accept that Priskin is not a world beater but but looking at Scotland & Ellington you can't convince me that he is not worthy of at least a 3 game run to see if ke gels with Chopra.
I can understand the logic of 4-5-1 away from home but playing @ home means that you are supposed to have an advantage so why give it away with a negative formation.
Even though he has had indifferent games so far, even the most amateur if pundits can see that JET has to be played in a position where he is most motivated & effective. (2nd striker with Chopra or just behind him) Wingplay is too claustrophobic for him. (carson best bet, as he has shown, as 2nd winger)
Start with Jack Ainsley as a centre back on Tuesday. He looks & plays like a no nonsense defender in the mould of (wish he was still here) Richard Naylor.
Too many midfielders of the same ilk. £2m for Leadbitter, bite their hand off) Use money to soothe the way for Bullard.
Stockdale looks real quality, not seen since Kelvin Davis's days.

Decent start & saints game should be a cracker!

I think everyones being a little too negative, I personally went to see Cambs utd away yesterday as a fam member of mine was in the away squad, the stands were pretty full, and r.e the comments about atmosphere and low attendances, i would guess that it is much more down to the overpricing than the football being boring. Yes we need to be more positive at home, and one up front is a shocking system, bring back the Royle days where we were always a big threat going forward and played flowing football, we won games by outscoring the opposition, and with Jet playing alongside Chops and another decent holding midfielder (Kennedy did an awesome job against arsenal - no pace, but a great vision) we will ultimately improve and get results. But the negativity around the ground needs to stop, especially after 2 league games, northampton cannot be excused, nothing but a lacck of professionalism against a nothing side, but league games are completely different, 8 new faces in this team. If you look at the prediction chart at start of the year majority of fans said wed make the playoffs or be there or there abouts, i cant believe for a minute all of you on here having a moan of groan made up the small percentage of people who said we'd struggle. While we have seen nothing to suggest so far that we will win promotion, its not like weve seen anythign to suggest we havent got a good bases for a team and are making progress. I personally think we'l finish around 8-10th place, which even that is a stark improvement, lets be positive and get behind the team!

Surprised to read some of the comments on here about JET. After Tuesday's defeat he was "mad as hell and Saturday we'll be back all guns blazing". I can only imagine that a third game in eight days was too much for him and perhaps he needs more work on his fitness. Let's hope so; early days for him.

Re. Jewell's comments, personally I'd rather win one and lose one than draw two (one extra point for starters). Presumably he is talking about not losing games when it is still 0-0 with 15-20 minutes left. I think that's fine away from home, but at home I'd always hope that we'd go for the win in those situations.

Let's hope this defeat means that we do come out "all guns blazing" on Tuesday night against Southampton and provide them with a reality check. From what I've seen of them, they are going to be full of energy and confidence so we're going to have to be on our game to turn them over.

OMG...the negativity of some on here (H32 being the epitome of this) amazes me!
We have played two league games..yes TWO!! ffs.

Of course its disappointing to lose...i was disappointed. Thats natural. But the team will need time to gel, and we still have more new players to come in.

Some people think we have a god given right to be at the top of the table. Eh..have you noticed a few other teams are just as big and just as capable of it as us?

Just be a bit patient. And to be slagging off PJ already?? Seriously whats that about?

Bluelady, Pinewoodblueboy, WarkyWonderLand.. i'm with you.

I think many of us are disappointed because we all thought we had turned a corner. After this performance, we don't look much different to the same period last year. The two bright spots are Chopra and Cresswell, but I fear Chopra will get frustrated if he doesn't get more support. Still, I'm sure PJ knows this and I think he will make further additions. At the moment, I think we should go with the following: Ainsley, Ing. (when fit!), Delaney, Cresswell; Edwards, Bowyer, Leadbitter, Carson; Jet, Chopra. I'm afraid Lee and Smith don't make it into my first 11 at present, although they may just make it onto the bench. And no more "old experienced" heads, please, PJ. Let's get in some young, tall and up-and-coming talent. "Easier said than done, my son" (PJ).

Completely agree, Kuqicoo. Of course I'd have liked to have seen us win yesterday, but it's not the end of the world.

The important thing at this stage of the season and with so many new players is to get them all used to playing with each other, while at the same time picking up enough points to stay in touch with the top of the table. The team will gradually improve as the players learn where their strengths lie and hopefully they will catch the winning habit and see us competing at the right end of the table before too long.

I'm sure PJ won't make too many changes for Tuesday night, although I have a feeling he might rest JET and replace him with Carson. Southampton are bound to be more attacking than Hull were and this should lead to chances at both ends. Hopefully we'll stick ours away and come out on top, but it won't be all doom and gloom if we don't.

Just dont understand the negativeness of people out there - you would think we have just lost our 5th game on the bounce and look like no hopers - some people need to step back and get real . Yes it was a frustrating day and we SHOULD have put chances away we had in first half . PJ knows our weakness - as do other teams and us !!! CB and RB . lets look at it by end Sept - I am sure we will have some more new faces by then ..Patience boys and girls , patience - it takes time to bed in a new team

Shotton came on with about 5 minutes left against Chelski. Has a hell of a throw on him (à la Delap). I very much doubt we'll get him, but he looks young and fit, so here's hoping...

Well hear we are, new season, Jewells new team but same old, same old. Problems at centre half.....no flair/playmaker in midfield and an isolated striker. Haven't we heard this before?! Just how many players does Jewell have to sign and yet the basic problems with the team are still so evident. I was more than disappointed, I was HUGELY disappointed. It was just the same drivel I've watched for most of the last 3 years. Sort it out PJ or we will have another season of boring football and you will be lucky to see the stadium even half full.

Paul 'negative' Jewell was the reason for the defeat yesterday. Pitiful. One up front at home and still some of you are deluded. How many more times - PJ has been here 8 MONTHS now and still he persists with this terrible, boring style. Can only assume he was playing for a point? Attendances will continue to fall. Poor first gate for the first home league game - why? Simple - PJ's negative tactics are costing the club. Things have to change and quickly. When Roy and Jim occasionally played this one up front, people (rightly) battered them - why is PJ exempt?

p.s. - Unneccessary critism of JET in my opinion. Please blame the MANAGER not JET. He was played out of position. Paul 'Negative' Jewell is to blame - he would be great as a striker or support for Chopra - who will soon get fed-up playing as a loan striker in a negative team.

bluelady added 18:21 - Aug 14
Jas if you say he has had eight months why oh why did you ask people to give keane time after eighteen months? Also I never once saw you criticize keane for one up front..... as for jet, granted he was player out of position, so is Edwards so was Connor in the past and jack ainsley Tuesday, did they sulk? He is paid a lot of money is a flare player but on sat was very very poor, I will give him time though but don't blame his behaviour on jewell.... I'm disappointed think tactics were not good but I also think to have any credibility you need consistancy in your criticisms of managers, keane never did a thing wrong in your eyes......

If Jewell persists in playing 4-5-1 as at present poor old Chopra will be burnt out by October.

JET needs to play behind the srtiker, his the only midfielder with creativity, play 442 and give him a free role as part of the 2 upfront.

Delaney is an awful footballer, lost count the amount of times he could not control a simple pass, Smith was well out of position for the goal.

HOWEVER, Town made one mistake and Hull scored, Hull did not make any defensively, they were sound. The keeper made 1 quality save from Kennedys deflective shot.

We need someone like Bullard who can get the ball down and play, it went from centre back to striker way to quickly.

But there were 5 new players in the starting lineup +Andrews & Ellington when they came on, it will take a few games to gel, dont forget that 2 of the 3 games last week were handed to Chops by David James.

Bring on Southampton Tuesday

This is typical of the fans on this site. 2nd league game of the season and the moaners are out in force. People need to calm down a bit. Can't believe JET is being moaned about already - give the guy a chance.
It's like you expected us to go through the season winning every game by 3-0. Newsflash - we will not win every week !!!
