Kennedy: Players Need to Look at Themselves
Kennedy: Players Need to Look at Themselves
Monday, 22nd Aug 2011 11:37

Mark Kennedy says he and his fellow Town players need to take a “long hard look” at themselves after the Blues’ recent heavy defeats. The former Ireland international apologised to fans for Saturday’s latest thrashing at Peterborough.

Kennedy, a second-half sub at London Road, said: "A club like Ipswich shouldn't be performing like we did at Peterborough and hand on heart that boils down to the players. We all need to have a long hard look at ourselves and start taking responsibility for it.

"It wasn't good enough. We know that, and I think I speak on behalf of the rest of the lads in the dressing room by apologising to the fans and saying that we are determined to get things right."

He added: "Everybody in our dressing room has to appreciate how good our fans are. I've played in teams before where we have been winning at half-time and still been booed off.

“Here the fans have been right behind us in every match and we need to remember just how lucky we are to have fans like that supporting us, and the sooner we realise that, the better.”

Meanwhile, Wolves are the latest club to be linked with a move for Town target Jimmy Bullard, who is expected to become a free agent today after Hull City terminated his contract.

I dont really understand what is going on with our club.
I mean there are alot of good players out there, PJ has been at Portman Rd for 8 mnths now and he still hasnt been able to find some good defenders. We have alot of rejects in midfield and apart from Chopra up front the rest are useles.
PJ should at least have sorted the defence by now which is the most important thing, then build fron there.
PJ should be responsible for this as well as some of the players.

One thing came good aout of Peterborough game though, dont have to see T.Smith for few weeks. He is one player that I really DISLIKE at Town. I never thought I would ever say this for one of our players but he is an absolute waste.

on saturday evening it was a very shocking performance,BUT the referee and the so called linesman will have to take the blame here to,yes our players were bad but when you look at the performance of the ref and the so called linesman 3 offsides 1 sending off that should not off been and a penalty that was not even in the box,we were still rubbish again but surely that did not help us at all could have been all so different if they had done their jobs properly. i am still very hopeful that we will get something out of this season but thought that was worst refereeing ever

I cant believe what has happened to our club i was really excited at start of season with all our new signings. PJ please please get in a centre half a creative and pacey midfielder a winger who can beat a player and a target man who can look after himself alongside chops. E.G Simon Cox, Rickie Lambert

Need to look at themselves, a good proportion of them neeed to resign.
When I started watching Town we could be proud of everyone, and now they've retired they still need to work for a living.
Compare to today's wasters (too many of them) who get more money than makes any sense for being rubbish, how times have changed.

After watching how Leeds battled back against Wet Sham yesterday and should have won I hate to think how our midfield and defence will cope against Keogh and Gradel! It could be a cricket score if we're not careful!

Why wasnt he in the starting 11? The best and most experienced defender we have...

l 12rdp. to try to use the referees performance as an excuse for the teams performance is clutching a straws. i was at game & didnt cross my mind that any of the goals were offside. while clearly sky would have shown technically there may have been a couple that were, the offsides were very marginal, & the instructions say that if in doubt give the benefit of the doubt to the attacker. as for martins red card, im a referee, & i believe having seen it again on tv that it appears harsh. however what wasnt seen on tv was the manner in which he ran from the opponents half to make the challenge. you could see he was wound up, so i believe it may be the case the referee felt there was some intent in the challenge & therefore would have been correct to show a red if that the case. so instead of berating the officials, which it has to be said, very few at the game did, put the blame squarely at where it belongs, with the players, who should be ashamed of themselves, & i believe, whose wages for last week should be withheld & given to charity.

Quite right Mark - you should all be ashamed of yourself.

However, and as with Roy, Jim, George, Joe and the managers before them, the buck stops with the Manager. PJ is honest enough to admit this and he is right. The manager picks the team, chooses the tactics, subs, the training schedule and signs the players (to which PJ has signed 10 to date). Bottom line is Mark and the players didn't chose to play a negative 4-5-1 at home. It wasn't them who failed to address the defence in the Summer. It wasn't them who signed ageing has been injury prone players. No - I'm sorry but you are deluded if you think PJ is not to blame.

No point apologising - what needs to happen is the mistakes of the past nine games are addressed and that's PJ's job!

Talk is cheap, am fed up of hearing one player after another pedal out the same old cliches, which they seem to believe will keep the fans happy. So glad I decided not to purchase a season ticket for myself & my 5 yr old son, we have got tickets for the Leeds game this Sat, but to be honest I have a good mind not to go. ME, SC, PJ & ALL the playing staff need a damn good look at themselves, my beloved club is fast becoming a joke.....

If everybody is finished ranting about whose fault it was and bombarding the club with spam emails, I would like to suggest a variation to the 'refund debate' which some people have raised.

I don't think the club should refund the cost of the away tickets but I genuinely think that the players should chip in to pay back the fans who travelled to Peterborough. According to the report, a total of 1,346 fans made the journey there with tickets I understand costing £25 max.

By all means correct me if I'm wrong, and I'd like to point out that I wasn't actually there, instead having the 'luxury' of watching the match on Sky. By my calculations, the total cost of the exercise would be about £30k at most, which could be covered easily if the players who played contributed a small percentage of their salaries.

I just think a gesture is required and it should come from the players, all of whom earn considerably more than the fans who travelled (and paid) to watch them and were let down spectacularly...

It's a management problem

The players simply CANNOT be THAT bad

And it's time to stop undermining the centre back position so foolishly.

Get on with what you have Mr Jewel and stop moaning

Bloody Hell my son and I arrive at Brize Norton early Saturday morning and are all geared to travel up from Oxfordshire but after the last two results and bearing in mind my Boss is a Leeds nut I am not sure I could stomach a home slapping from Leeds.
Maybe we should take a gentle tour of Englands green and pleasant land!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kennedy certainly stating the obvious - But where is the apology from the Owner and Chief Exec for this RUBBISH ??

Lets not start getting too worried. The last time a team lost 7 - 1 in the championship they ended up winning promotion in the same season. Now, what did I do with that bottle of wine !!

I think Mark K Deserves a little credit to apoligising to us fans. It's not that often in football where one player apolgises on behalf of the team in public. Should of been the captains job but he doesn't exist.

Well said Mark K.

It is a disgrace that more than 48 hours after the match that the captain of the football club has still not come out to apologise to the fans for Saturday's debacle. This reflects badly on the club's management and image.

The club is too distant from the fans these days to even contemplate refunding the supporters who travelled to Peterborough. They have shown this particularly with the ticket pricing policy, which has been abysmal for the the last two years.

I hope PJ is seeking advice from Russell Osman on the team's defence. I can't see a new centre back coming in for Saturday, it would be great to be proved wrong though.
