Forest Step Up Move for Town Target Collins
Forest Step Up Move for Town Target Collins
Wednesday, 7th Sep 2011 08:54

Nottingham Forest are stepping up their attempts to sign Town target Danny Collins on loan from Stoke City, according to a tabloid report this morning. Forest have long been admirers of the 31-year-old, who was on the bench for Wales as they lost 1-0 to England last night.

Steve McClaren’s club are said to be ready to pay close to Collins’s full Stoke wage of £25,000-a-week to gazump the Blues, who have been chasing the former Sunderland man for some weeks.

Central defender or left-back Collins has been left out of Stoke’s 25-man Premier League squad with manager Tony Pulis keen that he should go out and play games elsewhere. Portsmouth have also been linked.

From tomorrow, Football League clubs are able to take players on 'emergency' loans of up to 93 days.

Meanwhile, former Blue Connor Wickham is perhaps unsurprisingly reported to have played down the chances of him returning to Town on loan. Manager Paul Jewell made what appeared to be a semi-serious suggestion that he had enquired about the England U21 international striker’s availability last week.

If Forest want to pay 25k a week for him then let them!

We can do far better, for much less.

I Agree TractorMan 25k is to much, let them have him. However I am not sure they have the money either going by the reports regarding the spending on new players?

Would any player want to go to Forest under the management of the 'Walley with the Brolley'? £25k p.w. must be too much for Championship clubs to afford. Surely we can do as well or better for less.

I dont want to see us paying this guy £25,000pw.

Whats going on? This is no way to run a club.

There should be limited numbers of players above £10k per week, and these should be exceptional players like Bullard only.

Can we start looking outside the Prem, rather than loading ourselves with under achieving over earners?

I'm not so sure we can "do better for less". Hasn't PJ been trying to get CB reinforcements all summer without much success? Collins is half decent, particularly at this level and if it takes wages that are comparable to what Bullard is probably is on, we should go for it.
I think the success of our season will be down to our defence (or lack of it)

Location could also play a part in this one - damn there being so many Midlands clubs.

25k?

No point breaking our wage structure. So he will probably go to forrest.

Maybe if we pay a (larger) % of his wages then Stoke may allow him here.

Completely agree with cornishnick, the price could be worth it as long as it stops us from conceding so many goals and he plays week in week out!

We shouldnt be paying £25,000 a week for a loan player!!!! Forest are panicking already and mclaren needs something to get the fans onside!!!.....if Collins comes to Town it will be for Football reasons only....I cant see Stoke worrying too much about the wages being paid for collins considering who they have signed recently and they inflated prices paid for some of the players they have brought in......they obviously have plenty of cash sloshing around!...he could do a job at this level....

Stinkiusminkius I agree. On a short term loan the hours drive along the A50 to Nottingham from Stoke means he'll be able to get home everynight to his Family.

I'm pleased that solid defenders are the target, but concerned that we don't seem to have targeted any right-backs (unless it has been kept under wraps). Carlos Edwards is not a RB: never has been, never will be. He has no one challenging him for that position which I think is criminal. This is going to be our Achilles heel if we don't recruit at least one; if not 2 solid RBs - similar to Cresswell.

Bluenut - Good idea, let's get Clegg to take us back to the dark days of adm9inistration by paying wages we cannot cover.

Marshall's Mullet :- I think the article says, Nottingham Forest are prepared to make an offer close to his wages, not us. Who says we will offer that kind of money anyway ?

I agree with BSITFC - of all the emergency loans we need its a right back! I was back in Blightly over the summer and able to see the games, and clearly other managers have been reading our message boards and attacking specifically down our right. With Sonko in now I would rate a RB as top most priority.

£25k a week for a 30 plus year old defender not wanted by Stoke City and people on here think we should do it !!! Do any of you run a business ? Of course we all know we need a CB and RB , but we should not be paying those type of wages .. Get real people ...

Disappointing this. He's far more likely to go to Forest as it's only an hour down the A50 and he can live at home.

hold on, he gets his contracted stoke wages whether we pay it all or not, its stoke that benefit in that situation not the player. this is a win win for them both tho though, he gets a short trip to Notts and no hassles, stoke get more cash..... on to the next...... we should have a wages cap for loan players at the very most £15k or something and thats only if they already have a deal tied up for us to buy them IF we want. otherwise we fund other clubs large squads and screw our finances in the process......

Are you missing the administrators?

1, What is the source of this story,is it a stoke ploy to get a bit more money for him 2, Did P.J not say a little while ago that he had spoken to a player and that he (the player) was very keen to come to portman road 3, If Stoke are getting greedy then sorry but he can go to forrest and we look to the next target. With the premier league having now named their 25 man squads ther is bound to be a few more defenders available to us and going of at a tangent what position does the young spurs player Rose play at.

We cannot start paying ridiculous wages for players, especially 31-year-old loanees. £25K a week is £1.3M a year, or to put it another way around 3,500 season ticket holders!

It's a shame we couldn't have bought a young centre back from League One, League Two or overseas for a transfer fee but on moderate wages.

We're not too badly off now though: Delaney, Ingimarsson, Smith and Sonko all available. If they can stay fit, potentially Ingimarsson and Sonko are better than our options a year ago: Brown, Eastman and McAuley.

I know a lot of you are saying thats too much money and thats no way to run a business and yes thats correct to a certain degree; if we did that for most players then we would be in trouble behind the scenes. However, if it is for one player that we do need in a position that has been problematic for us, when we have struggled to bring players in to this position all summer and when we know other clubs are interested in similar players then I don't think its such a bad idea. Won't seem overpriced if we are hovering around the top of the league come Christmas will it?
