Stats Showed Town's Dominance at Cardiff
Stats Showed Town's Dominance at Cardiff

Blues boss Paul Jewell was delighted with the way his team played at Cardiff on Saturday, just disappointed that they didn’t seal the three points when they were on top. The Town manager’s viewpoint was borne out by the post-match statistics.

Jewell said: “For large periods of that game on Saturday we played really, really well. We didn’t start great and they finished strongly but in between we should have had the game sewn up.

“I was looking at the stats. We had 300 passes to their 180, we had 19 shots, we had 57% possession. So as far as the game went football-wise we dominated it."

Impressive stuff against a side Jewell says he rates: “Cardiff have drawn with Leicester and beaten Southampton in their last two games, so they’re a good team.

“To be fair, we should have sewn the game up, we had chances when we were 2-1 up and had chances to see the game off but didn’t and the way their goal came about was horrible because it definitely wasn’t a penalty.

“But you bounce back, and even then we had a really well worked freekick and Carlos Edwards could have scored right at the end.

“Although they came at us and knocked the ball into our box, we defended and we kept trying get the third goal. It was important for us not to lose like any game.

“There are going to be some games where we do lose, but certainly at the minute we’re looking to try and win every game.”

Despite the recent upturn, the Town manager says no side can perform for 90 minutes every week: “I think we have to be careful. We’re not going to dominate games from the first whistle to the last. There are going to be times when we come under pressure, there are going to be times when we don’t play well.

“I think the key to a team being successful is that when they don’t play great they still get something out of the game.”

Encouraging statistics, we've just got to take more of those chances and turn them into goals.

if u believe stats mean nothing it just goes to show how little you know!

we are playing well and playing teams off the park, with attractive football, this will lead to promotion!

I was at the game, there was absolutely no way we had 19 shots on target as is suggested. Very few were actually on target, plenty were high and wide.

Why do people say untruths to try and justify a point.

Lies, lies and damm statistics

Cardinal

I suspect he meant shots overall (PA said 17 but what they see as a shot might not be the same as ProZone). Have amended the error.

There is only one stat that ever matters, the result. I'm happy enough with that.

Stats may show how well you play, but only one statistic counts and this is goals for v goals against.

Even goals for & against doesn't necessarily count for that much. The two bad thumpings we were on the end of in August only cost us 6 points at most (and with the way Southampton have been playing, we could well have lost that one anyway). It'll only turn out to be awkward if we're in a close race for the play-off/promotion spots come May.

Those stats do not surprise me, as our midfield is starting to dominate games - look at the build up to our second goal. Real teamwork.

The draw did not surprise me against Cardiff as they can fashion a goal out of nothing (QED). We should dominate Pompey and Palace in the middle of the park this week.
