Town Target Leyton Orient Winger
Town Target Leyton Orient Winger
Tuesday, 15th Nov 2011 00:22

Town are understood to be ready to make a move for Leyton Orient’s 19-year-old winger or striker George Porter. The Blues are believed to be keen to take the pacy wideman on an initial loan with a view to a permanent deal which after milestone clauses could be worth as much as £500,000.

Porter joined Orient on a two-year deal in May 2010 from Ryman Premier League side Cray Wanderers after impressing during a trial at Brisbane Road, manager Russell Slade seeing him as one for the future: "George has huge potential. He's only had a year in football, but he has tons and tons of natural ability.”

Born in Sidcup, Porter made only one appearance for the O’s during his first season, spending time on loan with Lewes in the Blue Square Bet Premier, then back in the Ryman League with Hastings.

This season, 5ft 10in-tall Porter has made much more of an impression, scoring two goals in seven starts and 10 sub appearances, including one in Saturday’s FA Cup victory over Bromley. Charlton and Southend are amongst the other clubs to have been keeping an eye on his progress.

Happy on either flank as well as up front, Porter is lacking in experience but is very much the type of young, hungry player that manager Paul Jewell has repeatedly said he is looking to target to take the Blues forward.

Could be a Cresswell, could be a Drury. But unless we get him here for a try-out on loan we'll never find out for ourselves.

i'm not sure pleasure idiots like Suffolknclose get from posting. A quick look on O's site reveals that GP is full of pace with "breathtaking speed" "giving defenders torid time" "super burst" plus he always seems close to scoring as well as providing crosses. He's just the type we need, just a shame PJ hasnt signed him!

I think I know a fair amount about football (I'm addicted to the game) but I know nothing about this guy.
If Paul Jewell has trust in him, then lets at least give the guy a chance.
If he can cross the ball he's one up on Leadbitter straight away.

Oh FFS some comments on here are laughable !!

'' At 19 a player should be playing championship football already'' - That is bollocks ! , he is playing in league 1 which is a great standred at 19 , the player need to be given a chance from someone like us to prove himself and become a great player , Ian Wright didnt start league football intil he was 22 suppose he wasnt good enough ???

I think this would be a good signing and would look forward to watch him play , this could be another cresswell , lets home so !

i watched him play on saturday against bromley. he was quite good, scored a good goal and got an opponent sent of for kicking him. my O's friend loves him. wouldn't be a bad bet.

Yesterday I suggested on the Jewell spotted at Preston story, that we should be looking at this young man but doubted whether we would be interested as he was 10 years too young for us. Did PJ read my post???? or are the reports I have read about him from Orient a smokescreen to off load him?? Anyway what happened to the last wide man we got from a lower Division - Drury wasn't it, if George comes here let's hope he doesn't just get the odd few minutes and then is shipped back to the lower leagues.

If we're on the look out for wingers then surely PJ is looking to move away from the diamond!!! Brilliant news. Potter is supposed to be exceptionally quick and I personally don't think the step up is anywhere near as big as people traditionally thought. Carson, Martin and possibly JET (could cut in from the wing but would rather see him behind Chopra) need competetion in a 4-2-3-1

We already have two relative young wide players in Martin and Carson who PJ seems reluctant to play. Do we really need to spend £500 000 on another who is said to be one for the future when we could put the money into the academy?

Looks decent, especially on loan and it wouldn't be £500,000 up front. Having said that we do already have martin, JET, carson, peters (whatever happened to him...) and potentially edwards as decent wingers, would any of them need to go? Also it means if we signed this guy he'd have plenty of time to improve, we wouldn't just throw him in the deep end straight away if he couldn't cope. If the young players look decent they're always worth a look, even if just a loan! We hardly suffered much when it didn't pay off with players like roberts etc.

lets play 4 wingers up front - 2 on the right , 2 on the left - love it - got to think of a catchy name now for the formation - just need a target man in the middle now

People keep referring to Drury but hat was a different case. PJ wants youngsters with a hunger. Drury was 27 (?) and if he had a hunger to play at a higher level, he would have stayed with promoted Stevenage, not drop down a league to play with Luton.

I can't say I have heard of him. Maybe a good idea to get him in on loan and review his performance after that? Still a massive jump from league one to a big championship club though, but he may relish the opportunity.

He's young, good on the ball, has pace and is no doubt hungry to succeed and make the step up...a no brainer really, or shall we attempt to get that kind of player on loan from the Prem? Christ, how much would that cost and how many times have we been there? Learn from the likes of Peterborough and Nodge and Aaron Cresswell too for that matter..

Would be good to sign some players for the future. PJ on the whole failed to do that in the Summer - relying on has been injury prone oldies. Not the right approach as 15th in the table suggests. Targeting up and coming youngsters, with hunger and desire seems to be the correct approach - but as others point out PJ is the manager and should know what he's doing.

Sadly, and despite people saying 'stop moaning' - I fail to see what evidence there is to suggest PJ does actually know what he is doing. I personally don't think he is right for this club at all - one decent run 5 or so week's ago does not in my opinion forgive some really horrendous results and dull performances. But the good thing about this board is people are ENTITLED to their opinion. I will still turn up and support the team, even if I do completely disagree with choice of manager.

jas, fair enough, you can keep moaning, but please stop moaning about these 'old players'.

Last year I can't imagine you were telling us that signing Bullard would be anything but a great deal, we all thought that, it hasn't worked as of yet but at the time it was a great deal! Sonko, collins and Andrews have added a real improvement in a dire situation and scotland has suddenly shown a desire to play. I think that actually most people are in favour of Edwards at right back at present over Peters (the younger choice...)

Meanwhile, Leadbitter, in his prime, is captain. JET has been given lots of chances to secure a position. Chopra is not too old. Cresswell looks a revelation. Carson was given a break after having a sluggish looking start to the season (which Jewell openly stated was because of his poor attitude towards pre-season training, not his ability), Martin was disciplined by Jewell but has improved since Jewell turned up, Ellington and Murphy (loan and old player) are back up, not actually what we're building on.

Overall I'd say it's fairly 50:50 between emergency proven players to secure the team (which has worked against West Ham and Brighton, but not against Palace and Millwall) and young talent (remember Smith and Delaney were also given a chance, as was Ainsley, and they all looked far too off the pace) which are being given opportunities.

If we sack Jewell this season, the board will be making a decision which isn't building for the future, because all they will be doing is sacking yet another manager. It takes time. Lots of it.

One of things that harms progress in football the most is impatience. I think we ought to just suck this up for the season and see what happens, and if Jewell fails to deliver by the summer, then by all means, let's sack him and start again. It would be pointless until then.
