Jewell: My Fault, Not Clegg's
Jewell: My Fault, Not Clegg's
Friday, 6th Jan 2012 12:09

Blues boss Paul Jewell has defended Simon Clegg in the wake of the recent criticism aimed at the club's chief executive. The Town manager says he’s the one who should take the blame and the flak for the Blues’ poor on-field performances.

Jewell said: “I think when you’ve been in football all your life, one thing’s for sure, you’re always going to get stick. That’s the way football is.

“We have to hold our hands up, certainly as a management team, and say ‘we’re getting beaten, so people aren’t going to like me at the moment’. At the end of the day we’d like to be liked and the only way to be liked is to win football matches.

“There’s a lot of good work that goes on at Ipswich that Simon does, but the most important thing for people in Ipswich is winning matches on the pitch and it’s not really Simon’s fault that we’re losing matches."

He says that criticism is inevitable when teams are playing badly but that the buck stops with him: “I don’t know what’s been said, but I’m sure he’s had a lot of unfair stick. It’s easy when things are going badly to lash out at someone and it’s normally the manager, and apparently the chief executive’s getting some as well.

“I take full responsibility. If anyone wants to throw any flak, just throw it my way. I don’t like it, but I accept some of it and move on. It’s not as if it’s something I haven’t seen before.”

Well said PJ I shall never understand why Clegg gets so much stick probably the same people who lambasted Sheepshanks and now want him back.

If you believe this article you'd believe anything!! It's my guess PJ has been instructed to put this out in the media to get the heat off Clegg. It goes without saying that with a football savvy CEO we would be in a far better position than we find ourselves today - even with the same players - I am convinced of that!!

He has been through all this before,He say's, It like water on a ducks back to him. Your right you ruined Derby and could not care less .And now its Ipswich's turn to get mugged by you. Do not try and take us for fool's. Your good at trying to talk your self out of a wet Paper Bag.And that is all. We have to put up with you for now,Make sure you get the right young players we need to rebuild our Club. COYB

Puzzle puzzle puzzle. Will fans at this club stop worrying who's to blame at the moment because the only thing that matters is results. The players score the goals and concede them. Clegg goes or stays? so what. He doesn't make results. Like PJ's said. The buck lies with him.

Cunning Jewell, take the flack from Clegg so he might return the favor and put in a good word for you with Evans when they have a meeting about sacking your sorry ass

I disagree with a lot of these posts because it is knee-jerk reaction time again. it was only a few weeks ago that we were singing the praises fo the team when they played out of their skins at Barnsley and scored five magnificent goals in the second half to prove that there really is team spirit having gone two goals behind at half time. Yes, some of those players - including keith Andrews have now departed but Rome was not built in a day and we must have the courage and the conviction to see things longer term. Perhaps this season is a write-off but if we win at Hull tomorrow it will be all smiles again....you watch!

I can't believe the drivel some people spout here. Do they really believe that Clegg is some Goebbels figure controlling the Ipswich propaganda machine, feeding words into Jewell's mouth to fool us poor gullible folk?

Can't we just let PJ issue a press release without someone crying 'conspiracy!' ? This is ITFC, not some banana republic. Time to grow up.

PJ must read these forums!
For all of you who focus on the negatives that were Derby and Sheff Wed, you all forget about Bradford and Wigan. Two smaller clubs who he took up into the top flight. You don't do that without being a good manager. Sheff Wed have been useless since they were relegated from the Premier League in 2000 and nobody has really been able to do anything with them since. Derby probably over achieved when they got to the Premier League and didn't have the resources to stay up and was going to be an impossible job and teams who get relegated often suffer the next season and beyond (us)

I think the issue here is there is a lack of transparency in terms of what exactly Simon Clegg's job is, what decisions are taken by him and how much are both Jewell and Clegg simply following orders from Evans.

I'm not expecting the club to bare it's soul, but this is one of the issues that stems from having a faceless owner who only communicates with the fans via the occasional carefully-worded statement. The problem is further exacerbated by the fact that Clegg is totally out of touch and when he isn't spouting thinly-vieled spin his interactions with the fanbase are often draconian.

Oh and the official supporters club board is a very narrow demographic of utter yes-men.

It's not about on-field performance PJ, it's about Clegg's lack of respect for the Town fans. He really couldn't give a s**t about them!

Have to say I disagree PJ, but nice of you to try and deflect.

Delivering on either a short-term or 'long-term' strategy is ultimately the responsibility of the CEO to facilitate. Clearly in football, the manager is the one delegated to do that operationally - but steering, leadership and any support required comes from above. Now thats how it works in most businesses - actually its more typical for the CEO to evolve any strategy themselves, but presumbably that stems from Marcus Evans.

I had a think off the top of my head of the tangigble output (from my lay view) of our current CEO to allow ITFC and its employees to achieve either short or long term (which most would argue doesn't exist, but I'll again give the management the benefit of the doubt) goals. I could only think of one positive (at the bottom):

Allowing the current manager to abandon an apparent long-term view to instead fill our ranks with freebie relics on single year deals and expensive loanees we cannot sign (or who can be recalled); disposing of experienced Academy and scouting staff; allowing the contracts of player's with considerable market value to expire; allowing transfer targets to sit in his office and then walk away to sign for our rivals; even contemplating Category 2 Academy Status (long term indeed); high match day ticket prices and increasing season ticket prices whilst quality of produce degrades significantly year on year; allowing a communications void to disconnect the club from its supporters, including spinning lines to appease disenchanted supporters.

The only positive I could think of was the good fee received for Connor Wickham, but I understand that comes with caveats and installments. I also chose not to blame Clegg for the inflated fees paid by Jewell's predessors for average players, but actually an involved CEO should be scrutinising those too, regardless of how much Evan's is willing to outlay.

Conclusion - I am increasingly concerned by Jewell's abilities, and I am still yet to be convinced of Clegg's. If someone would like to provide balance to this ranty comment, please feel free. I would be interested, particularly if I've missed something obvious.

Sorry Paul. If you think we are only fed up about the continuous on field disasters then you have no understanding of how we Town supporters truly feel. We feel as though we have been mugged and our club stolen from us. Ipswich Town Football Club no longer has a heart and it no longer has a soul. We were a very proud club with a great deal of justification and we were a shining example of what a very small club can achieve when correctly controlled and managed. We were envied, nation wide, for our Academy and that too is in the process of being destroyed and we are rapidly becoming the laughing stock of English football. Now Paul, if you think you are responsible for that situation then you clearly misunderstand what I am saying. The real problems lie way over your head and are in the hands of Messrs Evans and Clegg, it is they who should be standing up and taking the blame for the disastrous situation in which we find ourselves. Paul, a suggestion. Go and read that list put out by Ipswich First this morning then go and tell your bosses to get cracking and start accepting their responsibilities. COYB

Wake up, when Keane was manager who was the man behind him..... Major Clegg, and who puts the words into the players mouths when we read the various articles in the press.

I think a lot of the problems with Ipswich Town over the past 4 years is our friend Mr Clegg, you do not have to look any further.

time to realise that its been a long long time since this great club had been in such a poor state , it started with kean and the man who employed him .
we have gone from fans complaining about missing out on play off spots to fans worried about relagation over the past seasons and it started with mr cleggs appointment and im afraid that speaks volumes .

Fantastic post IpsRich.

This latest press conference really does not stand up to any sort of scrutiny. Jewell says he went off-plan and it's his fault, but if this is the case, why did Clegg/Evans let it happen?

The list of muck-ups since Marcus Evans walked through the door is really quite staggering. And all the while the relationship with the fanbase has been eroded and ticket prices have risen steadily. When will something tangible actually be done? Who at the club is going to show some leadership and actually address these issues?

And what the effin ballacks is really going on at Portman Road??
