Town Eyeing Norwich Striker
Town Eyeing Norwich Striker

Norwich City striker Aaron Wilbraham is understood to be on Paul Jewell’s list of potential January signings. The 32-year-old frontman has rarely been used since joining the Canaries a year ago from the MK Dons for an undisclosed fee reported to be £75,000.

While the Knutsford-born player doesn’t appear to be in line with manager Paul Jewell’s stated aim of bringing in younger players during this transfer window, the Blues appear short of a big striker in the mould of 6ft 3in tall Wilbraham, who is likely to be available for a nominal fee with his contract up in the summer.

After a spell in Manchester City’s youth set-up, Wilbraham began his senior career with Stockport, going out on loan to Moss FK in Norway during seven years at Edgeley Park, prior to a £100,000 July 2004 switch to Hull City.

After failing to nail down a place in a year with the Tigers, including a month on loan at Oldham, Wilbraham moved on to the MK Dons on a free transfer the following summer.

Following a spell on loan at Bradford in the 2005/06 campaign, Wilbraham helped his parent side to the 2007/08 League Two title.

A record of 57 goals in 153 starts and 43 sub appearances for the Dons, for whom he also played in central midfield, led to his switch to Norwich.

However, the man nicknamed ‘Alby’ has made only seven starts and nine sub appearances since moving to Norfolk, including today’s FA Cup victory over Burnley, netting once.

Town are also understood to have been monitoring Canaries midfielder Andrew Crofts this season, however, with the Welshman having kept his place in the Norwich side since their promotion, a move for the 27-year-old looks unlikely.

Blues boss Paul Jewell has been looking for a holding midfielder in the style of Crofts since the summer.

Meanwhile, Town representatives have been spotted at Luton recently, running the rule over left winger or left-back Jake Howells, who was previously linked in April.

The 20-year-old Hemel Hempstead-born Wales U21 international is out of contract at the end of the season.

You know, I watched my first Town match at Portman Road 35 years ago this month. There have been many low points (relegation in 1986, the humiliating season of 94/95, the succession of play off failures in the 90's, and the crushing disappointment of relegation in 2002 after such a great 2000/2001 season...but tonight I probably feel more depressed about my football team than at any other time before. I just wish all of them - Evans, Clegg, Jewell, Hutchins etc would get out of my club now and return its soul to people who care.

To be fair, Wibraham is arguably one of the finest strikers in England. It's just not an argument anyone would ever win.

Three new scouts and this is the best they could come up with?

This has got to be a joke surely. Mind you All Fools Day is not until 1 April

This would be as bad as when we signed Lee Chapman.

Since even PJ has admitted that the main problem is defence, why would we sign someone like this? Our problem is not a failure to score, it is letting them in at the wrong end. Sounds like a full-blown wind up.

Purely on this basis. If he is even a target. Paul Jewell should be relieved of his duties. Unbelieavble

I don't want to sign any scum offcasts whoever they are. After 40 years of continually watching Town, we'll be calling it a day if this or similar happens. The people that run this club are ripping the heart out of it and all it once proudly stood for. I'm assuming its a wind up.

This is just a softener: in a week we'll sign someone rubbish and everyone will go 'at least it isn't Wilbraham'. Or am I just being cynical?

I'm surprised not more championship/premier league teams are not in for him. Edwards could provide the service for him. Playoffs by easter I think.

Phil, could you add sources to your news? On a Saturday is this just paper talk?

Why does PJ contradict all his comments,we were told that there would be a change in transfer policy i.e try to sign younger ,hungry players and what do we here -we are trying to sign another 30 + player, this time from our friends down the road. Our club is becoming a joke but M.E and S.C do nothing. I have supported this club since 1951 and have never known such a shambles.

It's a rumour, it's almost definitely not going to happen, just like when we made that move for Hulse that everyone got in a pickle over... oh wait.

Fadedblue - we're not in for Sharp because Evans won't get his chequebook out for him, is that Jewell's fault?

Look on the bright side. He might be cheap (say a mere £5,000 a week) and he could even score a goal.

walberswick added 20:36 - Jan 7
Sharp isn't signing for Ipswich because he doesn't want to play for a team fighting relegation.
