Town Eyeing Norwich Striker
Town Eyeing Norwich Striker
Saturday, 7th Jan 2012 18:20

Norwich City striker Aaron Wilbraham is understood to be on Paul Jewell’s list of potential January signings. The 32-year-old frontman has rarely been used since joining the Canaries a year ago from the MK Dons for an undisclosed fee reported to be £75,000.

While the Knutsford-born player doesn’t appear to be in line with manager Paul Jewell’s stated aim of bringing in younger players during this transfer window, the Blues appear short of a big striker in the mould of 6ft 3in tall Wilbraham, who is likely to be available for a nominal fee with his contract up in the summer.

After a spell in Manchester City’s youth set-up, Wilbraham began his senior career with Stockport, going out on loan to Moss FK in Norway during seven years at Edgeley Park, prior to a £100,000 July 2004 switch to Hull City.

After failing to nail down a place in a year with the Tigers, including a month on loan at Oldham, Wilbraham moved on to the MK Dons on a free transfer the following summer.

Following a spell on loan at Bradford in the 2005/06 campaign, Wilbraham helped his parent side to the 2007/08 League Two title.

A record of 57 goals in 153 starts and 43 sub appearances for the Dons, for whom he also played in central midfield, led to his switch to Norwich.

However, the man nicknamed ‘Alby’ has made only seven starts and nine sub appearances since moving to Norfolk, including today’s FA Cup victory over Burnley, netting once.

Town are also understood to have been monitoring Canaries midfielder Andrew Crofts this season, however, with the Welshman having kept his place in the Norwich side since their promotion, a move for the 27-year-old looks unlikely.

Blues boss Paul Jewell has been looking for a holding midfielder in the style of Crofts since the summer.

Meanwhile, Town representatives have been spotted at Luton recently, running the rule over left winger or left-back Jake Howells, who was previously linked in April.

The 20-year-old Hemel Hempstead-born Wales U21 international is out of contract at the end of the season.

Nice to see we are planning for the future. Bad move jewell, he will have to play like drogba at his best every week to win over fans. Not a good signing, not good at all. And as for ingimarrson,- fair enough he has been truly shocking, but we now have only 2 fit centrebacks ( sonko and smith) at the club. We should have terminated his contract AFTER the replacement was confirmed. Cresswell is the only player I would keep at the club right now, and maybe Scotland. Feel sorry for him,- never gets any chances as we are always under so much pressure every game.

fadedblue - you're right. We should be bidding for him, if Evans were serious about getting up we'd surely have made a bid, I can't see Jewell seriously eyeing up this guy over sharp, his ambition isn't that small!

Ipswich will never be able to buy either Rhodes or Sharp now. Forgot them, wish them well and move on.

This lad Norwich would not be a good buy. We should be looking at League 1, 2 or the conference a lot more for our purchases coupled with bringing players through our youth system.

Just spoke to a Norwich fan (Some times sacrifices have to be made) he didn't rate him at all. Apparently had a few minutes yesterday but they did have an easy game it would seem. He is so far down the pecking order at Carrow Road it is untrue. Is this what we have lowered ourselves to, to try and beat relegation but then as other people have rightly pointed out the likes of Sharpe and Rhodes wouldn't want to come here now.

If this is true then i think it shows just how far this club has fallen ...buying unwanted rejects from Norwich. Sir Bobby must be turning in his grave!

I can't see Evans letting Jewell spend too much money during the transfer window especially if he is thinking of sacking him in the not too distant future. So it will be loans again until the end of the season.

This club is becoming such an embarrassment!

I dread going into work on a Monday morning because I just get ripped to pieces by supporters of other clubs.

Surely this is not true - we are interested in a 32 yr old player that is not being used by his club and he is expected to score the goals that will keep us in this division.....not only that he is currently at our fiercest rivals and therefore will need to play like Lionel Messi to win the fans over....

This can't be true. An 'experienced' bargain basement player who couldn't get a game with Norwich when they were in the lower leagues. Taking the p...

Honestly think ( given our team and it's age) that we are doing ok this season. I predicted a huge battle against delegation and as I write we are still not in the bottom 3. We only need 3 teams to be worse than us, only 3. Hopefully we can sign a few young players next season who can then take this club forward. Wilbraham is a good battler, may well be needed in the mo this ahead.

Paul Jewell - should NEVER have been allowed anywhere near this Football Club.

Only consolation for me is, I did predict all this, from the very first day of his appointment.
But the mess is so compound now - I just do not know how the hell we get out of it. I think the Club is basically done for.

h32 - I fear there are still people who think PJ is doing a good job ... mainly Clegg and Evans and in that is the worry! (plus a couple of deluded folk on here).

This is desperate news have watched him for 4 seasons at MK and he is terrible best move was to get rid of him can't think of one good thing to say about him and I have told him this to Face, if this is Jewell's answear then he deserves to go, I was very happy when when't to Norwich.
