O'Connor Outburst Least of Jewell's Worries
O'Connor Outburst Least of Jewell's Worries
Friday, 3rd Feb 2012 07:00

Town boss Paul Jewell wasn’t particularly upset by Shane O’Connor’s Twitter outburst and wondered who Cork City’s new signing might target next, laughing off the Irishman’s quickly-retracted Wednesday evening comments. O’Connor’s Blues contract was terminated by mutual consent earlier in the month after a year in which he had played only 16 minutes of first team football.

Jewell wondered whether the 21-year-old might hit out at some of the clubs where he had spent time on trial perhaps, or maybe at Port Vale where he was on loan before Christmas without breaking into the first team: “I don’t know who’s next, Port Vale, Yeovil, Southend? They’ll be getting it because that was where he went and he couldn’t get a game there. Maybe he needs to have a pop at them.

“Maybe spends too much time on Twitter and not enough worrying about his football,” he added.

The Town manager said he had no issue with the Irishman while he was at Portman Road: “I had no problem with him when he was here. The only problem we had was trying to get him fixed up somewhere.

“If Shane O’Connor’s having a pop at me on Twitter, it’s the least of my worries. Did he spell it right?”

O’Connor, who joined the Blues under Roy Keane’s management in 2009 after impressing during a trial, was never in favour under Jewell but the Town boss says there was nothing more to his omission than football: “The only reason anyone wouldn’t get picked is football, it’s nothing personal.

“I thought he was a nice lad. I’m disappointed, no, not disappointed, I’m surprised he’s on Twitter, to be honest.”

Asked whether he would advise young players not to go on Twitter, Jewell joked: “I would advise young players not to call a manager a c***, I don’t think that’s quite right!”

Speaking after signing on at hometown club Cork City yesterday, O’Connor was taking a more diplomatic line regarding his lack of chances at Portman Road, although while continuing lively and sweary exchanges of views on Twitter: “Managers come in and they don’t like you or they bring in their own players.

“I’ve been really low on confidence for the last six months, so coming to a place you feel wanted and can really go and express yourself, that’s what I want to do here.”

Difficult one this. Cresswell or O'Connor, Cresswell or O'Connor, Cresswell or O'Connor.

Struggling with that choice.

OK then - Cresswell. No brainer really!

Hope he enjoys cold Ireland. He deserves it

This lad really rates himself for someone who can't get into the port vale side! Would love to see him rotting in the cork reserves and never getting a game there!

Although this sort of rant cannot be condoned,i for one though Shane could have been good for us, Cressy is much better but Shane with the right support, as he is a rather imature young man,can be a good player at championship level.Perhaps left midfield? Good luck Shane.

Sounds like a weak minded individual.

Says it all that he couldnt find a club in England.

Agree 100% with O'Connor. Why he wasn't given a chance under PJ is a complete mystery. He can play left back or equally left midfield. Instead PJ opted for injury-prone has been's.

Despite three or four decent results (West Ham x 2, Barnsley away and Brighton home) it has been abysmal this season. I know several will chose to ignore this FACT and just harp about the one or two good results, but overall PJ has done a bad job. Yet again this also demonstrates that PJ is NOT an arm round the shoulder type of manager (Carson, Healy, Ingimarsson and Martin can back that up). Nor can he attract players!

Its a shame that Shane has a mental problem. His physical, skill and fitness levels were fine.

The boy was/is quite talented from all the games I saw him play in, he has obviously got a problem which was spotted at Liverpool, was that why they let him go ? He couldn't have been showing the right attitude and perhaps that is why he never made it here or anywhere else he has been!
Shame, but no need for the comments he made. Perhaps his own words tell you more about the lad than anyone can say.

Jas, are you really that stupid? What is the mystery? Oconnor is clearly not good enough for us, nor for lower placed teams so he's had to drop all the way to Irish league. Its not just pj that thinks this, so stop trying to spin another story for your endless pj out rants and try a bit of support. You're a tiresome individual.

Jas0999 injury prone has beens playing left back and left mid what are you on about? Cresswell one of our youngest players are arguably player of the season has been playing left back, and left mid has been rotated between Martin, jet, Carson and Murphy all with the exception of Murphy, who was very good on Tuesday, are young players who have performed well this season in a struggling team.also I don't think Martin shows that jewell isn't a good man manager at all, he was on loan at Charlto when jewell took over, pj recalled him and put him in the team and IMO he has been one of our better players over the past year. The fact is o'conner plays in two positions that have much better players ahead of him at itfc, a shame because i think he is still a decent player but not good enough at this level

People on here still saying they don't understand why he wasn't given a chance under Jewell???

He was given a chance every day in training, in the reserves and also out on loan and couldn't impress Jewell, the coaching staff or any of those he went on loan to, where he failed to get a game in a very poor injury plagued L2 side!!

Some players just aren't good enough and i'd rather see Joe Whight given the opportunity to cover for Cresswell than someone who clearly thinks a little too much of himself without the ability to back it up.

When did you last go to PR mate ? Injury prone has beens at left back / left mid ? Sorry mate but you really should think about what you say before you say it . Cressie , Carson , Murphy , Martin , Jet .... Dont see any injury prone has beens there . Good luck to Shane but sometimes you just have to accept if your not good enough your not good enough !! ITFC FOREVER !!

He's 21 years old , his footballing dreams have just been knocked, and he slags off the manager. How can anyone be angry at him.
Jewell is a manager who seems to ignore and dump players without talking to them.
As a manager he should have explained to a player what he needed to do to get in the team and ,if he's letting him ,go tell him why. Instead he does his usual Jewell smirk.
i thought O'Connor was a decent player for us we have a worse

osborne1nil added 10:32 - Feb 3
JAS0999, I assume that you thought Keane was an arm around the shoulder type Manager then????? Would say that PJ is alot nearer to that than Keane ever was, as Keane didn't even talk to some of them and fell out with loads of them.
Take your anti PJ specs off and see the light, Cresswell far better than O'Connor and Martin is now playing how he never could under RK, so no starting place for him here or all the other Clubs he tried for either.
