O'Connor Outburst Least of Jewell's Worries
O'Connor Outburst Least of Jewell's Worries
Friday, 3rd Feb 2012 07:00

Town boss Paul Jewell wasn’t particularly upset by Shane O’Connor’s Twitter outburst and wondered who Cork City’s new signing might target next, laughing off the Irishman’s quickly-retracted Wednesday evening comments. O’Connor’s Blues contract was terminated by mutual consent earlier in the month after a year in which he had played only 16 minutes of first team football.

Jewell wondered whether the 21-year-old might hit out at some of the clubs where he had spent time on trial perhaps, or maybe at Port Vale where he was on loan before Christmas without breaking into the first team: “I don’t know who’s next, Port Vale, Yeovil, Southend? They’ll be getting it because that was where he went and he couldn’t get a game there. Maybe he needs to have a pop at them.

“Maybe spends too much time on Twitter and not enough worrying about his football,” he added.

The Town manager said he had no issue with the Irishman while he was at Portman Road: “I had no problem with him when he was here. The only problem we had was trying to get him fixed up somewhere.

“If Shane O’Connor’s having a pop at me on Twitter, it’s the least of my worries. Did he spell it right?”

O’Connor, who joined the Blues under Roy Keane’s management in 2009 after impressing during a trial, was never in favour under Jewell but the Town boss says there was nothing more to his omission than football: “The only reason anyone wouldn’t get picked is football, it’s nothing personal.

“I thought he was a nice lad. I’m disappointed, no, not disappointed, I’m surprised he’s on Twitter, to be honest.”

Asked whether he would advise young players not to go on Twitter, Jewell joked: “I would advise young players not to call a manager a c***, I don’t think that’s quite right!”

Speaking after signing on at hometown club Cork City yesterday, O’Connor was taking a more diplomatic line regarding his lack of chances at Portman Road, although while continuing lively and sweary exchanges of views on Twitter: “Managers come in and they don’t like you or they bring in their own players.

“I’ve been really low on confidence for the last six months, so coming to a place you feel wanted and can really go and express yourself, that’s what I want to do here.”

Jas I really think you like winding us up but your postings do make me laugh so I suppose thats something. I'll give Shane one thing he is good on snow but that was about it really. At times he was not even on the bench at Port Vale - says it all.

His comments aside, O'Connor was an up and coming player for us. I felt he had more to offer to us than Kennedy and could have been a useful utility player. I can't remember him being anything other than consistent when he played for us. He never had a really bad game (unlike many of our players).
The O'Connor situation has been a mystery for a while. I can only assume the guy had an attitude problem and that led to him not being selected for the first team and being sent out on-loan.
McKeown, O'Connor and Lavery====all mysteries

Usual rubbish coming from JAS again Cresswell,Whight,Kennedy all above him at left back ,Martin,Jet,Murphy,Carson,Drury all above him at left midfield .
When Keane was in charge he would rather play centre backs out of position Smith,Delaney,ODea than give the wonder kid OConnor a game ?

Another futile knock at Jewell ,it must really annoy you that by Jewells own admission we have had a dreadful season and yet we still have more points than Keane had in his first full season that you backed as such a success . How many games did we go without ANY Wins was it 15 ?

Silly boy, hopefully he will learn from his mistakes, adjust his attitude a little and be successful in the future.

I'd be more worried if it was a current player tweeting it.

He has shown with his tweet that he is not the sort of player that is required at P.R. In the real world away from professional football that kind of comment about or to a manager at work could be considered gross missconduct at would lead to some sort of dissaplinary. He was signed by keane and turned out to be another waste of space ,I think due to his atttitude, maybe that sort of thing is ok at cork but if that is how you publicly talk about a manager,O.k he had been let go, who has let you leave when he could of had you rot in the background not even in the reserves then GOOD RIDDANCE

Liamo, totally agree with your well made points. but common sense is irrelevant, it was an opportunity for jas0999 to have a go at Jewell , and he/she can't let those go by.

go easy on the irish lad boys...hes no different than any other lad that dosent make tha grade, so many lads get there young heads in a spin when they get a call from a big club and soon realise its a different ball game from the way its done in their home clubs and they struggle.we all lose our heads at times and blame someone else he will soon learn that he was much luckier than most... please ease off on the f... o.. home to cork because so many lads are on there home from scotland wales and all parts of the uk. not long ago on other issues we were telling sonko, delaney, mc carthy, leadbetter, and the likes were to go. there on big bucks and if they were let go the first thing they,ll do is go on twitter and have a go at managers coaches and fans there pro this lad is a imature kid let him cool down in cold ireland as some comments said.

Paul Jewell is a comedy genius...... his press conferences are always entertaining....... hopefully his football turns the corner now and we get some momentum too.....

As for o'connor, always seemed ok, but always suspected he has some sort of issue not related to his ability, maybe this shows a little bit of it......

jas0999, why wasn't he given a chance??? Get real you've seen the kids comments, he couldn't get games at Port Vale or Southend so why should he here? There's clearly something wrong with his attitude and/or ability and attitude problems are clearly indicated in his tweets.
I, like many don't want people like him at Ipswich, he's better off earning less than most of us do playing in Ireland!
