Jewell Targeting Squad of 20
Jewell Targeting Squad of 20
Wednesday, 9th May 2012 12:26

Blues boss Paul Jewell is aiming to have a squad of 20 players at his disposal for the 2012/13 campaign.

Jewell told the club site: "We are looking to add to the squad and ideally I'd like 20 first-team players, especially as it looks as though we will be going back to seven subs next year.

"We want to be in a situation where we can have players who come into the side and don't weaken it too much.

"We were fortunate last year in that we didn't get any injuries to players like Cressy and Carlos Edward,s but injuries and suspensions happen and we have to be in a position to cover them.

"I have to be honest though, there isn't the money around to spend on the squad there was last year. That's not just here, it's right across football. What's happened at Rangers and at Portsmouth - and the recession that we are in - has put clubs on their guard."

Jewell, who has been promised some cash to spend by owner Marcus Evans and chief executive Simon Clegg, has previously said he’ll be looking to make around six signings during the close season.

If we are gonna sign six players to add to the current remaining squad of 19 then that means by my maths that we will have 25 first team players. Might this suggest that we will be selling as well as buying this summer?

PauloJulio - The difference between a squad and a team. The squad are those regularly involved on matchday, plus a couple of spares. We often travelled with 18 players this season (the sixteen required plus two). But we're going to need the odd few beyond that in the wider team, cover for injury/suspension and youths coming through. Plus maybe some of the youngsters out on loan. Don't reckon we can manage with many fewer than 25.

Who are these 20 first team squad players?

squad of 20 is not big enough

19 players includes Wight, Ainsley, Lawrence and Murray and doesn't include Ellington. I agree with Guthrum, it's more likely to be 20 plus those 4 youngsters

That should be plenty enough provided there`s no deadwood. Most of that seems to be going. Keep it up PJ.

I make it 16 players we have on our books as of June including Murray and Lawrance with Smith and Scotland yet to sign. With only one Goalkeeper.

At least being so thin on numbers will force us to buy - we won't be able to rely on loans because if any of them are recalled (Stockdale, McCarthy etc) we will be down to the bare minimum - agree 20 is a minimum we should be looking at, but can't help but feel a few more years of rebuilding are required!! @matthollandisgod, why get rid of Murray? he is an 'eager youngster' who was key to getting Swindon promoted out of league 2 this season - saw him play for Swindon a couple of times and he ran the line up front, good pace and energy, definitely classes as 'eager' don't you think??

@NorwichBlue_138 fair play about Murray was just concerned at 'his age' why he was not being given a chance in the fiurst team... Not his biggest fan by Arsene Wegner once said if they are not in the first team at 21 ... they will never be..

bluethroughnthrough, you were asking where Wickhams 8mil had gone. Try McAuley, Norris, Priskin & Leadbetter. You have to pay for this mismanagement somehow!

agreed with dozzell, we have debts, we have had players on big wages and whilst I myself have stated if we are a club with Premier League ambition we should see all of any transfer fees received reinvested, unfortunately the bills need paying and more often than not large transfers fees are used by clubs like ours to keep going.
The only problem with a squad of 20 is that if we have 7 subs then we need a matchday squad of 18, that's 2 left over, injuries and suspensions come along then where do we get the other players from apart from using the youth?

There is nothing wrong with having a small tightknit squad. Less people on the fringes moaning about. All fighting to get into first 11 will create a better togetherness. Still we need 2 keepers 2 defenders 2 midfielders 1 striker

Reality in this recession has come to most of us and why should ITFC be any different, we are in a much better position than many who are still living in the clouds. Well done ITFC for being ahead of what is going to be at least 2 or 3 difficult seasons for many clubs. Be glad people that you don't support clubs like Portsmouth and Rangers, who both ignored the warning signs and gambled..look where they are now. Is that what you want for our club?

Good scouting and a good youth policy will see us through....I hope!

20 isn't large enough and would only work if all twenty were good enough, with not enough money spent there is no way we will be stronger than last season. Too many of our good players have proved already they aren't consistent enough over the course of a season - I highly doubt if we will acquire better quality so next season we will be weaker. If we include JB as one example then it'd be a miracle if he was available for every match, factor in injuries, suspensions and bad luck and we could well only have 16 squad players for a game, maybe less.

I'm very worried

if we have 2 goalies, 8 defenders, 8 midfielders and 4 strikers thats 22 players, 2 for each position. considering the system we've been playing we can arguably make do with just 3 strikers, making 21. considering injuries/suspensions/lack of form then a 20 man squad does seem light to compete over 40 plus games with the fa and league cup to boot. if we had a stream of young players from the academy coming through then i'd suggest we'd be fine but it looks as if only byron lawrence is anywhere near breaking into the first team. this alone is cause for concern but the truth is nobody knows how the new ffp rules will actually impact clubs and the league overall or how the academy shake up will take shape. agreed we may be wise to air on the side of caution but with big clubs coming down the from the prem and momentum seemingly with other clubs enjoying arguably their most successful modern day periods there is a risk we will be left to languish toward the foot of the table. however, if it means more stability for the club, less stretching of our debt and increased emphasis on youth then we should have an advantage over other clubs in time as we already have the stadium, fanbase and youth development heritage. as long as we dont go down of course. we have to cut our cloth accordingly, i commend the club for doing so. its obvious they've made mistakes in regard to going after promotion in the past, i think in the long run we will get the formula right but i personally, dont expect promotion anytime soon. to be honest, i'm ok with that but i'm sure not all fans will feel the same.

Why are people still constantly knocking loans ,just because ours didnt work out this season doesnt make them all bad
Reading - Roberts,Connelly,Mullins,Afobe
West Ham- Collins ,Lansbury,Mccartney,Henderson
Blackpool -Dobbie,Dicko,Wilson
Brum - Myhill,Ramage,Ndaw,Townsend ,Huseklepp
Cardiff - Lawrence ,Kiss

A good loan can lead to a signing or a timely boost exactly what Jimmy did for us last season and what Lawrence and Dobbie have done for their respective clubs just when their form started dipping .
Championship teams are in financial crisis and loans are here to stay as the gulf gets bigger and bigger just get used to it
