Jewell Remaining Patient
Jewell Remaining Patient
Thursday, 7th Jun 2012 08:55

Blues boss Paul Jewell says he’s remaining patient as he looks to add around six players to his squad ahead of 2012/13. Right-back Elliott Hewitt became the first signing of the summer when he joined from Macclesfield last week, while plenty of names have been linked with moves to Portman Road since the season ended.

Jewell, who dismisses many of those links as purely speculative, says getting the right players signed is the priority, not signing them in a hurry: “Not many deals get done so early in the summer and we’re in no rush anyway. It’s important to get the right players on the right terms.

“Supporters always want to see new faces arriving and I’m as impatient as anyone, more so, in trying to bring players here, but you have to remain patient.

“Signing players is a complicated business nowadays. It’s just the way it is. Yes, in an ideal world I’d like to have all our players in place by the time we return to pre-season training in July, but we don’t live in an ideal world.”

The Town squad are due back at Playford Road for the start of their 2012/13 preparations on July 5th.

Well Bluey, I am in my late eighties so how old does that make you then? The oldest guy alive? However, I do not support the hypothesis that being a season ticket holder gives you any special distinction as a supporter. You can possibly remember the cries of "you don't deserve a ticket" from the North Stand aimed at the Season Ticket holders. Regarding Mr. Evans I firmly believe that his one really good decision, since he took over, was in not firing Paul Jewell when a load of short sighted idiots were clamouring for his head during last season. I firmly believe that at the moment the crisis is over and things are slowly coming right. It will now be a slow and patient process to get us back to the state in which we all long to be and, for that, PJ needs a lot of support from us, the supporters, because he gets little or nothing from the non-football people who are his bosses. I strongly believe that we are fortunate in having Paul Jewell to see us through this very bad time in our history and I will support him in any waay I can. COYB

I dont really care how old you are BillBlue I am entitled to my opinion and you yours you have voiced your opinion on here so have I,but I believe I am correct and time will tell Jewell is without doubt the worst manager Ipswich have had.
Football is changing and the only way Ipswich will progress is with a younger hungry manager not someone who came to Ipswich because he had not been offered a better job JEWELL OUT

Would like to see us move in for free transfer players ala George Boyd before someone elese nips in.

Lightningboy - Boyd isn't a free transfer, he's been transfer listed as he only has a year on his contract and hasn't signed a new one. Also we could try to nip in but who's to say Boyd would want to move straight away - it's in his interests to wait and see if any other clubs come in for him and then we're back to the Ward situation.

Um, its only early June !!. Season is two months away !!. Some people need a chill pill.

Please remember that this is a long summer and it is still a month before the players are back for pre season training, so lets be patient. We have already signed a very promising young right back and potentially getting Bryan Klug back to the Academy. Also, Tommy Smith who has signed a contract is doing very well for New Zealand, so there are a number of positives! Lets be patient and start judging PJ after Christmas.

here we go again just sit and wait and look what happened when we went after the portsmouth players and jewell ur job is on the line big time this year and sitting there doing nothing isnt helping one bit and the fans dont want another season in the championship

Bluey123 do u honestly think he is worse than RK ? Or John Duncan , or Mick McGiven ??, but in particular Keane.
He sold Rhodes, Trotter and David wright, he also got rid of Garvan and Pablo, who at that time were the only two creative footballers we had. The football was dour, he wasted money on Priskin and Leadbitter and he sacked Klug. Plus results were poor.
PJ results have been no better and he made two or three poor signings but he made two or three good ones too and the football is better IMO.
PJ isn't perfect but has a lot more going for him than his predecessor.

there is only 9 weeks to go before our first game of the season all be it in the cup at this rate we will only have 1 goalkeeper and 1 centrehalf as smith will be on olympic duty available for this game how many of these players we are linked with will actually come through and what happened with the offer made for judge of notts county

@Bobblehat - just to top things off didn't Keane also sell Stead, our top scorer at a time when we were struggling for goals in order to buy Priskin?

@alliedaz - do you really think that Jewell is just sitting there? I think it more probable that he'll be in touch with lots of other managers, agents, players etc trying to get them to come to Ipswich. Players that they've scouted for months. The problem is lots of other managers around the country will be doing exactly the same thing.

And to add to that, all Jewell's signings that cost transfer fees have been absolute steals if you ask me.

Fatcatevans added 16:59 - Jun 7
Its all academic - unless Jewell signs a quality keeper and centre half which have been missing for two years then we are just making up the numbers. I think the sound bites and comic remarks from PJ need to be backed up with action asap

Dozzell, completely agree with you, RK is much worse than PJ (who is only made to look bad as he's clearing up Keanes mess) time will tell but I still believe in PJ

Budapest, another strange RK decision, I still think Stead could do a job here and in fact was good at coming off the bench so a good impact sub.

There was a mess left by RK and only time and restructuring will sort it out.

Would rather MrPJ waited and got 3 more quality players than 6 has beens .
We have 2 good signings so far( Klug & Eliot ) which are for the future so i think we need a little patience oh oh a little patience

@budapestbyplimp the problem i see is that we always linked to players and 9 times out of 10 they fail to show and we make such a big deal about it it always ends in tears,at the moment money does talk in the championship and like a few big teams they are willing to take a gamble and for us the last few seasons have been a waste of time and fans want beta like yourself or are you happy with another season in the championship

strange no links or speculation this week

BillBlue added 18:17 - Jun 7
alliedaz. When it says 'linked' just totally ignore it because it is usually no more than some Agent trying to get his player noticed or a bored media guy inventing something because there is a lack of news. Even a good guy like Phil sometimes does it. Only last week I had a moan because he had put something out for which there was not a hope in hell of it being factual. The main problem this year has been the continuous reporting re the Portsmouth trio. That was a major mistake. When the January window closed that should have been it instead of all that nonsensical rumbling on which got no where. When we failed to sign them in January we should have looked elsewhere because there are other, and better, players out there. Being honest I hardly ever read an item where 'linked' is in the headline, other than when something unusual catches my eye. Plenty of time to get what we want, be patient and we will all end up happy. COYB

Billblue, absolutely love your optimism. And I agree that 'links' should be looked at objectively as most are just irresponsible journalism. However suppression of rumours, whether based on fact or fiction, is not in anybody's interests. Objectivity is the key; we all know that some transfer targets are unrealistic. The real problem is that we have sunk so low that targets that might sometime back have been realistic are now out of reach.

Welcome to the real world people. Keep your fingers crossed.

Bluey123 were they your relations who i had to listen to calling for Sir Bob's head when he failed to get us out of the bottom half of the table in his first three seasons ? Some people on here would win a degree for moaning. Just remember that if the best managers in the world were all given a team in the same league, one of them would be bottom.

Bluey123... get a grip, lowest point in the clubs history????? opinions are good but should be backed up by facts, otherwise you sound silly...

How about relegation following the season we won the league title 1962 and a transitional period following Sir Alfs decision to take the england job, some very baron years followed and nothing much happened of real note until a guy called Bobby Robson took over, his early years were unsuccessful on the whole, with many a true supporter (just like you are) wanting him out. glad the board the didnt listen to those supporters, arent you? The club is very much in a similar position to that period of time.

What about the debt Following the building of the Pioneer stand ( now Britannia )which lead to our team, one of the best teams in europe to be dismantled to make the payments. Some of the teams that followed that period were truly crap, John Duncan especially springs to mind.

And then what about Sheepshanks, it was under his guidance that we were relegated and went into administration, ultimately leading to the Evans takeover bid.

Are these great times at portman road? no they are not, but they are certainly not the worse either. Under Evans we will not be heading for Administration again, thats for sure and i welcome the tightening of the purse strings, because i tell you this when we get to the promised land we will we able to stay there and keep the team.

No i am not a big fan of Paul Jewell but a fan of ipswich town and i would like him to at least see his contract out.

I have been supporting Ipswich long enough to remember the highs and the many lows. A big difference now is Media coverage, back in the day many situations within the club passed unnoticed, these days a manager farts and the whole world gets to hear.

So Bluey123, i hope i have refreshed your memory

Patients jewell is having a laugh isn't he!!
1 goal keeper & 2 centre halves at the club & he says be patient.
How come these other clubs are signing players I.e Sheffield weds Kirkland, gardener 2 good players. Ward to palace missed out there big time.
It is still early days but I will be a lot happier if we can sign a couple of players on before any other clubs get their hands on them.
