Clegg: Torch Relay Special Experience
Clegg: Torch Relay Special Experience
Thursday, 21st Jun 2012 17:53

Town chief executive Simon Clegg has hailed running a leg of the Olympic torch relay in Keswick in the Lake District earlier today as an “almost spiritual experience”.

Prior to joining Town in 2009, Clegg spent 20 years and 12 summer and winter Games with the British Olympic Association as deputy general secretary and then chief executive and for six years led the political and media campaign to bring the Games to London.

Clegg, who hadn't previously run with the torch at any previous Games, said: “This was a particularly special almost spiritual experience for me.

"The Olympic flame is highly symbolic and I’m proud that the project that we started in 1997 has brought communities together throughout the UK to celebrate this ‘once in a generation’ experience.

“The 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games in London will be an awesome display of physical ability and will have a lasting impact on so many people who will be directly or indirectly involved.”

Clegg will be an official attaché for the Pacific island of Guam during London 2012.

Obviously, we are in for someone in the Portugal or Germany squad so it will be worth waiting that eztra week for a bit of quality.

".....a few things come to mind... "

Yes they do Andy

A few weeks after we appointed Clegg the budgies also brought in a new CEO. They were in a division below us, had no money and were near to administration.

Three years later they are in the PL have just picked up £75m. We will be lucky to get £15m. If they get relegated they will still earn another £70m, followed by nearly £50m in parachute payments over 4 years. If the scum stay up the TV money increases by another £20m a year.

What have we done in those years ? More importantly what do we look like we are going to do ? Cobble together another patched up squad, this time from low paid youngsters instead of the aged has beens of last summer ?

The Championship looks very strong this season. Finding three teams who will be worse than us at the moment looks a struggle. And if we do stay up, what next for us the season after ?

Something has to change, and something fairly drastic at that.

Perhaps ME is thinking of taking us into adminstration and writing off his loss against his other tax liabilities.

@cartman.
The problem is that we're going nowhere. I always try to look at things in a balanced way rather than just outright moaning but we've gone backwards since Evans came in and there doesn't look like there's going to be much investment this year.

I am still behind Jewell and supporting him and hoping for a much improved season, I am not one who is dillusioned by our glorious past of 30 years ago. The chances of ever reaching those heights again are very unlikely, even with substantial investment, the big clubs are just too far ahead of everyone else.
That doesn't mean I've no ambition either, look at Stoke, and to a lesser extent Swansea and The Nodge, all similar sized clubs who have done it or doing the business of getting out of this league and establishing themselves as top flight sides.
This is why some moan, we're stagnating at the moment with a real fear of going even further backwards as we don't seem to be able to attract top Championship quality players at the moment, siging lower league, cheaper players is great in principal but are they all going to work out the same as Cressie and Drury? Or go the same way as some past lower league players like Roberts and Parkin?

The main problem a lot of us have with Clegg is that he didn't have footballing experience and many of us still don't have confidence in him as being the right man to support our equally inexperienced owner.

We have failed with our objectives at present and my general philosphy is you get your own business in order before you start doing other things, Ipswich is still a business that needs that, a CEO off galavanting about with torches and Guam doesn't inspire many of us that he's got Ipswich as his number one priority.

h32 - I have never been Clegg's biggest fan, but I thought Bowden did a good job before him though. I like Jewell and he has a good record in management, so I hope he can do well for ITFC after a disappointing season last time.

Perhaps now Oly(mpics) Clegg has fulfilled this ambition he'll leave ITFC alone. ME's interest in clegg is clearly for the olympics connection and not football. What we now need is a press scoop linking Clegg with selling of freeby tickets and we can say bye bye to him

AndyUK61873 -- whilst I tend to agree with your post, these factors have not stopped Brighton and Hull signing two keepers that we had intentions on from under out nose.

Carrying the torch is an undoubted honour, but I would have preferred my CEO to be sorting out the mess that is our goal keeping situation.

Or perhaps that was what he doing. He threw the torch into the crowd and the first person to catch it was offered a contract.

@BergholtBlue......I agree with you, a couple of players we have been linked with had made decisions and not joined, I would contend however, in a world where player contracts are not common knowledge we have no idea what demands were made and what Brighton or Hull are paying, we know from JB experience Hull will overpay for players. Would have to think that Brighton are paying a premuim as well, not saying we are a better team but Wolfsburg certainly are better than both us and Brigton and Tomasz has not signed for them.
My concerns over the town team for next year we still to become greater if we hit the end of July and we have not made some improvements, but the transfer window is open for another 9weeks, so plenty of time to get the players on board. It will not ruin our season if we don't get players in place before the 1st game of the season. You don't win or lose promotion in August or September.

Really get with it firstly 'we have signed 2 good young players' 1 of them needed a hip operation and no one else wanted him secondly the Euros are on so no one is doing deals get real the agents are out there doing deals by the bucketful ready for the start of the new season so don't think for one moment other clubs are not busy snapping up the players while those in sleepy suffolk wait for another dismal season with morons in charge with klug being brought back just to make it look good

buryblue77 added 15:27 - Jun 22
newboy, I don't always agree with much you say but the excuse of the euros is a pathetic one. Are we really going for players who are involved with any of the teams who have been in the competition this year? I very much doubt it, so if anything the agents should be getting involved more so with transfer dealings at this level because their work load will increase when the players the represent who have been at the tournament start to return.

Brighton sign Man U keeper. Players back within two weeks. Our CEO is wandering about with a torch and helping Guam in the Olympics. Why do people on here get upset when some of us complain about the complete shambles our club is becoming!!!

braveblue -........ because they know no better - and are 'head in the sand' merchants.

HARRY10 added 22:51 - Jun 22
Unfortunately it is not 'in the sand' where many have their head buried.

Maybe they could stop looking at their lower colon and tell the rest of us where they think the club have improved since Clegg has been here.

Because for the rest of us we are looking at what amounts to the contents of a lower colon - the sorry state of our once proud club.

A great honour, must have been like what Mick Mills felt when he held the FA Cup up but Clegg wouldn,t know that as football doesn,t seem to be his thing.
