Target Kuszczak Was at Town for Talks
Target Kuszczak Was at Town for Talks
Saturday, 7th Jul 2012 07:30

Boss Paul Jewell has revealed that ex-Manchester United keeper Tomasz Kuszczak was at Town for talks earlier in the summer before opting to join Brighton, who he believes offered the 30-year-old Polish international “a fantastic deal”. As TWTD reported in April, Kuszczak was top of Jewell’s wish-list as he looks to bring in a new number one for the season ahead.

Jewell said: “I met him here. I had Tomasz Kuszczak here. But I think Brighton offered him a fantastic deal, it was as simple as that.

“I spoke to him, but you have to work within your framework. I don’t know why he went, I would imagine he got a good deal and Brighton is a good club.”

He says players will look at the various options which are on the table rather than taking the first offer they receive: “I spoke to him in my office. He was impressed with the place and everything, but at the end of the day we aren’t a club that can just get a player in and not expect him to leave without signing.”

Bosnian-born former Swiss international Eldin Jakupović is currently on trial but Jewell says he could also add another keeper to his ranks even if the 27-year-old impresses: “We’re having a look at him for the week, but we’ve also got two or three other targets that even if that happens we might pursue.”

He says he’s not ruling out bringing in a player from the lower leagues, although we understand there is nothing in links with former Colchester keeper Ben Williams.

Jewell says he wanted a number one who was plying his trade in the lower leagues last season but who has become rather more familiar in recent months: “If I thought that goalkeeper was the right one then absolutely.

“There are a lot of decent goalkeepers in the lower leagues. Look at Jack Butland. He was on loan at Cheltenham last year and now he’s in the England squad.

“We tried to get him here last year but he was at Cheltenham. He’s been around and now all of a sudden [Birmingham] want £6 million for him. There are good goalkeepers down there.”

Meanwhile, US international keeper Brad Guzan, who was linked with the Blues in March is set to re-sign at Aston Villa having previously decided to leave the Premier League side.

tractorgirls- no argument that Keane wasted some money but PJ ? Chopra, JET, Drury and Cresswell ?, these are the players we paid fees for.
Ok wages for Ing and Ellington but thats not a huge amount is it.

I think we need to look at Magilton and Keane for wasting Marcus Evans' money and they spent big on players who didn't work out. Everyone Jewell has bought has been a success, it was only his free transfer signings Ingimarsson, Bowyer, Bullard and Ellington who didn't perform (I accept some on big wages, but probably still earning less than Keane's signings).

As for Kuszczak, he is a good keeper and there was no harm in trying to sign him. We could not have known in advance that Brighton would make such a good offer for him. It's about value for money, we need to be ambitious but not pay over the odds.

Blueblood66 and all those on the " how our once great club has fallen from grace" pedestal.

Being a town fan for more than 40 years i have witnessed many ups and downs, the ups well they dont need mentioning, we all know them and many of us have been there to experience them.

I want to mention previous lows, that those of you with apparent selective memory have forgotton. ok go back to the Mid eighties, we had just been through a spell of european glory, finishing runners up in the old first division when we should of won it, we had a spell of being one of the top teams in europe then almost overnight we are skint playing poor football in the second division and the type of transfer we are doing is player swaps ( putney to norwich, deehan to ipswich) around this same period, the club is so short of funds an idea is put forward suggesting the players provide their own lunches, to save money. Then there was the football under John Duncan, nuff said on that one. Thankfully into the nineties we secured John Lyle as manager, that again is history, a good piece.

Now lets remember 2001/2 a season that started with so much promise, burley had brought in some very expensive signings, Sereni, finidi, la pen, 10 million on those transfer fees alone, plus their wages. The first game was a demolition of derby. I worked match days back then for ipswich and i remember spending my itfc earnings in the pub celebrating how lucky i was to support itfc . oh and how soon things changed the massive signings all flopped and we were relegated with administration for good Measure. The fact is we have never really recovered from that mis-use of club funds and the debt it created.

So for those who suggest this is the lowest point in towns history, think again. We have been an average side for too long languishing in the wrong division, thats for sure, but if our history is anything to go by ( and we do, thats why this site is called twtd) we will rise again.

Now try supporting the club through the downs so we can all enjoy the ups when they arrive.

There will come a time when Evans will dispense of certain employees if he feels the situation is not working. That again links back to the proud traditions of itfc,( they give their managers time).

I urge all the true supporters, to just be patient....coyb

excellent post dissboy, that's exactly the point. too many people on here are unrealistic in their expectations. the simple fact is, we are getting a team together, and that's going to take time. too much time is spent on here with people moaning that we don't have instant success. i remember the year we were laughed out of the premier league after picking up the dubious honour of being smashed 9-0 by man utd. that was a low point, but we regrouped and came back stronger although it took several years to get there. as you rightly point out its the lows that are what make the highs so much sweeter.

Have spoken to a couple of Man U supporters and the consensus is he is a flapper who is prone to the odd big blunder so he's no loss. Bring on Scott Loach.

Great post Dissboy. Agree with everything there. But some of us are overrating this keeper a little bit? Like Matt said above, he is quite a flapper at times. Also i think there are younger keepers we could be going for. Ones that will improve over years to come.

Basically Jewell failed again but wastes eveyone's time talking about it. Why does he not just get on with doing something positive. His deals seem to take months possibly because the players are making sure no one else wants them.
I Amos disappointed with his attitude.

It does demonstrate our ongoing problem of not getting our top targets and another example could be Chambers who has "taken more tiem to think about it" even though apparently "I'm only talking to 1 club".

Yeah right and I am about to sign for Barcelona!!

Anyway I think Kuszczak is overrated, personally I think we can sign better so lets move on.

Alright guys. Brighton fan here.

Been reading these pages a bit since the recent links posted up on our boards re: the notorious banner and then this Kuszczak lark.

Think most Albion fans realise the banner was a bizarrely misguided moment of madness from a small bunch off ignorant whatsits. No grudge held or unpleasantness still felt. Didn't half help fire our fans up to roar us on to victory, though. In fact, feel free to bring another one this season! ;0)

Re: Kuszczak. We are working to a strict budget so are not throwing money around as some suggest here. Last season our budget was the 17th highest out of the 24. Don't know this season although is reportedly 'a bit more'. When the FFP kicks in we will be as well placed as anyone else. Chairman Bloom is a very shrewd and successful businessman with the club's interests very close to his heart (comes from a long line of Albion fans).

Our club's been through the mill and back again these past two decades and we've suffered a ridiculous amount of pain following the Albion, but at long last we are back to our natural size...realising the potential we've been waiting to fulfil for so long due to outsiders' influences.

Any funds we are spending will come from revenue generated from our 22,000 season ticket sell-out, large % sales on ale and pies and club merchandise - all of which have been a HUGE success...e.g we sell 10,000 pies per match.

Hope that clarifies things.

Anyway, it's bound to be another very competitive division. I wish you guys luck on the forthcoming season. Used to have a soft spot for you as I grew up when Eric Gates, Paul Mariner, John Wark, Alan Brazil, Mick Mills and Arnold Muhren were regular fixtures on the tellybox.

How do you see you team shaping up this campaign?
