Edwards to Remain Skipper
Edwards to Remain Skipper
Thursday, 12th Jul 2012 15:09

Town manager Paul Jewell says he has no plans to replace Carlos Edwards as captain. The signing of former Nottingham Forest skipper Luke Chambers had led to speculation that the 26-year-old might be handed the armband.

But Jewell told the club site: "I don't see any reason to change who wears the armband. Carlos did brilliantly for us last year as skipper and the role seemed to add to his game.

"You don't have to wear the armband to be a leader and that's what we want Luke to be, a leader. Like everyone else, we want him to lead by example on the pitch.

"It's not really about who has the armband. It's about what you do out on the pitch and in and around the club during the week. That's what makes a leader."

Glad thats the case. Did well as captain. Luke can be a future captain. But want we really want is all our players to be leaders on and off the pitch and lead us to the premiership.

Yep, really pleased about that. Carlos did really well last year and this, in all probability, being his last full playing year I think it right that he remains Captain. Not only is he well established but as PJ says other people are expected to lead in the game and that will give other people the opportunity to show their abilities. Well done and congrats to Carlos. good news, a player who seemed to increase in stature with the armband, unlike maccauly who pretty much imploded when we had it...... hopefully with heaton / hopf in goal, chambers / smith in the middle, and potentially stevenson who looked to be quite vocal when he was on last year, we will have a decent set of 'leaders' right down the middle of the park......

Still need a proper right back, so where does that put Carlos. Presumably PJ still sees him as the 1st choice RB?

Luke C better be at his best to cut out all the crosses from the right!

My choice would be tommy smith all day every day!

Carlos has done well but lets be honest how easy is it to get a cross in when your playing up against him!

It's a tricky situation. By giving Carlos the armband it means that we can easily assign it the following season. if it was given to Luke the wrong message would have been sent out entirely. Tommy is probably still too young. And with the exception of the as yet unsigned keeper. We really have no other options.

Happy with this. I see Carlos a bit like Fabian Wilnis. Respected by the players, questioned by some fans but overall a good guy that gives 110% to the Blues.

With a much more settled side, the players looking good in training and a few more additions, we are going to be looking good for next season.

However I am under no illusions, this is going to be the hardest this league has been for some time.

I believe we are up for the challenge.

great. i think he is a player who may not be the best in his position (rb when he is a rw) but gives his all.
I think either chambers or smith will take it a few years

Good choice and I like Carlos but I'd imagine only Scotland can understand him? Have you ever heard him talk.
This is a serious point as you have to understand what the skipper is saying.

I think Carlos Edwards did a good job, taking over from the worst captain in my time of supporting Ipswich, Grant Leadbitter. It makes sense to stick with Edwards. Chambers should earn the right to become captain and there is no point putting that extra pressure on a new arrival.

I know its not relative to the point ,but a squad i think would give us a chance of top 6. Heaton. Loach. A.L.B.

Defenders. Hewitt. Dlaney. Smith. Creswell. Chambers. Whight. Ainsley. Keogh. Edwards. Sonks.
Midfielders. Drury. Hyam. Bullard. Stevenson. Carson. Lawerwnce. J.E.T. Martin.
Forwards. Chops. Scotland. Murray. Davies. Fuller.

Well thats a squad should have us up there. With a loan or 2 thrown in.

Any thoughts??

@ipsuefa: What do you mean? He is more understandable than the suffolk accent and speaks well. Really weird comment imo.

Edwards has been an excellent signing for ITFC - and certainly deserves to retain the armband after doing a decent job for us last year. Good decision.

Agree with the decision to keep Carlos. IMO hasn't done anything wrong to lose the band. It would be a bit harsh for a new player to come in and take it. Captaincy should be earned by merit and commitment to the club.
