Naylor Hangs Up Boots and Returns to Leeds
Naylor Hangs Up Boots and Returns to Leeds
Friday, 13th Jul 2012 10:13

Town Wembley hero Richard Naylor has been appointed to a role with his hometown club Leeds United, where he played for two and a half years after leaving Town in January 2009. The striker-turned-defender has decided to hang up his boots having left Rotherham towards the end of last season.

The 35-year-old will be working alongside the Whites’ U18s boss Neil Redfearn at the Yorkshire club’s academy.

Naylor made 261 Town starts, a club record 118 sub appearances and scored 42 goals - the most famous the second in the 4-2 1999/00 play-off final victory over Barnsley - between 1996 and 2009, having come through the Blues' youth system.

His touch leading to Claphams cross for Stewarts goal at wembley will always stick out the most for me. He turned that game on its head.

Love this thread. Just shows what a footballer can do to the heads of real fans. RN was never a 'proper' star in the sense that he was a target for the Premier League but he held a place (and of course always will) in the minds of IFTC supporters. His contribution to the Play Off win will never be forgotten but I remember other parts he played in the 'forgotten' games when he sustained serious injuries but continually battled back to return triumphant.

Good luck Bam Bam.

Worthy of a statue at Portman Road for that performance in the play off final. I'll never forget that day and the role Naylor played in it. I wish him all the best in whatever he does from now on and if I ever meet him again I'll buy him a pint

Good luck to him. Will never forget his MOM performance at Wembley!

However, was never a CB - but possibly better than any of PJ's attempts at a CB position to date!

Solid player....rash at times, good defender, but had the occasional, striker defending lunge in him when playing at the back, but was vocal and people listened we have missed that of late.

When he 1st cam onto the scene as a young striker before his knee injuries he was a very god player indeed and when he came back from his injuries, what he had lost in pace he made up for in his 100% commitment.

In my opinion he was man of the match in the playoff final even though he came off the bench, a town legend in my view. Good luck Bam bam

True ITFC Pedigree - shamefully having to settle back in the north for a position he should have had here.
I know where he would be by choice, along with several more of OUR LEGENDS - IF ONLY THEY HAD THE OPPORTUNITY.

What a career Bam Bam had when you think about it:

1) Scored in a play-off final at Wembley and had arguably his finest game as a striker in that match.
2) Played his part in securing 5th place in the Premier League.
3) Played up front against Inter Milan at the San Siro.
4) Successfully changed position halfway through his career. Between ourselves, Leeds and Doncaster, he must have played 300+ games in defence. That to me indicates a successful conversion from one position to another.
5) Was on the winning side in an FA Cup tie at Manchester United (someone posted a great photo from that game of Bam Bam muscling Rooney off the ball).
6) Won a promotion with his hometown team.

Ultimately he was one of those great cases of a player achieiving a great deal in the game by wringing every drop out of his ability that he possibly could.

Will always be a hero here and I wish him every success in his switch to coaching.
