Jewell Pleased With Away Point at Brighton
Tuesday, 2nd Oct 2012 22:44

Blues boss Paul Jewell was pleased with a point after drawing 1-1 away at Brighton but admitted to being disappointed that his side couldn’t hold on after going ahead in the first half through Daryl Murphy.

Jewell said: “Obviously you’re disappointed when you’re winning 1-0, but they’re a good team, Brighton, like most teams in this league.

“They have a way of playing which is very difficult to stop and I thought we stopped that for long periods and frustrated them.

“We kept our shape really well and counter-attacked excellently in the first half especially and we should have been 2-0 up. We had a wonderful opportunity at the start of the second half, their keeper made a great save from Daryl Murphy.

“They scored the goal, they had a lot of pressure, which they will have here, but I thought we stood up to the task well.”

The Blues boss says his team’s defending has improved in the last couple of matches: “We’ve conceded goals from set plays and stuff this season and we’ve taken a lot of flak and we can’t hide away from that, but I think the lads have shown in the last two games that the spirit is there, we just need to get that victory and I’m sure we’ll be on our way.”

Jewell was pleased to see Daryl Murphy net his first goal since he returned for his third loan spell but thought he could have netted at least one more.

He also had praise for his captain, the creator of Murphy’s goal: “Daryl scored a great goal and could have had a couple more.

“I thought Carlos Edwards was outstanding. For someone allegedly of 34, he looks like an 18-year-old. I thought he was brilliant tonight, Carlos.

“I thought the rest of the team dug in there and at times when we had to show greater aptitude and determination.”

The Town manager was happier with Jay Emmanuel-Thomas’s display: “I thought tonight he put in a good shift.”

Guirane N’Daw was one of Town’s stand-out performers with the Senegalese international settling into the side.

Jewell said: “It’s difficult. In the middle of the park, it’s a battle at the moment, but I thought we looked a bit more compact tonight and on the break at times we made really good opportunities at a difficult place to come.”

The Blues boss said Michael Chopra was replaced in the second half as he was tired: “Playing up front on your own is a difficult task and he hasn’t trained fully, he’s had two training sessions since we played Charlton. He was never going to play the 90 minutes.”

Jewell added that midfielder Luke Hyam is a concern for Saturday’s home game against Cardiff City: “I think Luke is a doubt for the weekend. He got a knee in his back on Saturday and they can take a while to settle down.”

We were on a good run last year and then lost 3-0 at the Amex. This year we are on a shocking run and we draw 1-1. In the words of Yazz Top, "the only way is up baby"

When you look at the league table this morning is the goals scored column. That is not enough to win football matches. And we are the team with the least number of wins in the league.

Simply not good enough and something has to give.

Brighton was a good result but on the whole you look at the bigger picture, goals scored, goal difference, league position, 1 win in 9 (the least I think) and not a lot has changed, pretty woeful in fact.

After the game I am well happy for the point, but STILL maintain we need to keep Edwards in Midfield over Defense; His assist for the goal was quite nice! I also think Chopra alone in attack isn't working- If we had some more confidence in front of goal I would say the team has some character to climb up the table by the end of October; but I sinscerely think we need to look at a good ol' 4-4-2 at this point in time

Pauljewellisgod..... a really good away point, has to be said. And although i expect it to be a hard game we always play better against the better sides ( west ham last year). So for you to say, " hopefully nick a point against Cardiff " leaves me somewhat surprised, we are playing cardiff not Man U. WE SHOULD, be looking to win our home games , not as you say, nick points at home from teams in this Division, how would you feel if jewell said hopefully nick a point? I expect better from the team and the supporters, nicking points at home is not the way forward...COYB

I am very pleased that fans on this web site are showing their feelings by voting down the negative posts. We had an excellent draw against Barnsley and another good point last night, which could have easily been a win.The negativity is all about the management and not about the players. At Wolves our centre half scores for Wolves.Chops hit the goalkeeper with a strike that should have gone in.Jason put the ball over from 3 yards.Against Barnsley ,Dawson comes from our left wing, behind defence and scores. At Charlton their first goal came from a cross from our left wing which happened because our left defence were ball watching.Whose fault was all of this. One guess.Oh no,not the players.Negativity spreads throughout the club, its like a creeping virus.Get behind the team,Constructive criticism OK,whinging for the sake of it no.COYB.

IT was a very good point against Brighton !! but to say a good point against Barnsley does not look so good now after Peterboro went up there and thrashed them 2-0 !!!
But a point is a point ?????

Higginbotham has clearly had an effect on the solidity of our defence; if you can stop the opposition scoring it gives us a much better opportunity of avoiding defeat. If we can avoid defeat we gain confidence and then maybe our scoring record at the other end will improve. A winning run would take us up the table quickly in this league and even just continuing to avoid defeat will improve our position, it's still early days. Lets see how we do against Cardiff, beat them and we're on the up. COYB

Sorry but anyone who thinks we've turned the corner is seriously deluded and any Town fan with a brain in his/her head know that we need change.

Scraping points here and there are not going to get us away from the relegation zone (we could be bottom come kick off on saturday)..let alone into the play-offs.

It shows how far we've fallen that a lot of people are conned into thinking that 2 draws are decent results...Pathetic...time to wake up before it's too late!

One warm early September evening in 1971, the loyal supporters at Portman Road had taken enough! The manager had cleared out all the favourate players, he had made a substitution that the crowd disagreed with and he was tactically inept! The crowd demanded that he be sacked, he had reached the bottom! The chairman who knew nothing about football, who had never kicked a ball in anger took the opposite view, he gave the manager a payrise and extended his contract! Whatever happened to that manager?

Pleased to finally see some sensible comments on here. Though the usual idiocy still prevalent sadly.

Some of you need to live in the real world. Yes we are definitely under-achieving and things aren't looking great, but a draw away to the table toppers is ALWAYS a good result, even more so in our current situation. Anyone who says it isn't is an idiot I'm afraid.

I remember us going to Bradford under Burley when we were challenging for top two (as were they) and we held out in a tight game for 0-0 and that was a good result and we were all chuffed with it. So, because we've been poor this season a 1-1 away to the big spending table toppers suddenly isn't any good? Surely, it's even more impressive. Pillocks.

Lets hope these two decent results (and they are decent, considering our situation) will give the players a bit of a lift and start a decent run of form. If not, then clearly things will have to change.

Yes Paul Cooper is God, it was a different game then. Expectations were not so high, players were paid sensible wages and were accesable to the fans, in fact it was probably easier to be a manager? Even then the club had no money so not everything has changed?

We played well last night, yes we were on the back foot for large parts of the game but they are a top team in this league at the moment..
disappointed that he has not mentioned the excellent support last night, it was all Ipswich fans specially the second half

Well all I can say is that if some of you are satisfied with where we are/where we're going then you're very easily pleased...23rd in this league is abysmal.

We have to take this result as a huge positive. The bigger picture is still gloomy with posh managing to batter Barnsley and the Blues not winning for weeks now. Higginbottom has made a big difference to the defence but we still can't score goals or win games. Time for a change., it certainly helped Col Utd..

Hahahaha! I get minuses for stating the facts on my last post, as others have said you get called a budgie supporter or told to f... off if you send a post which is too realistic for some 'true' supporters that have their heads buried in the sand!
